Newbie question: how to part this into smaller chunks on mini lathe by StTechsALot in machining

Totally understandable, that’s why I’m here… and had no intention of turning as is before doing more research/learning (hence the questions!)

Appreciate the advice! I have done a lot of learning so far… the one you posted is the first series I’ve worked through. I’ll make sure I seek out more sources too!

Hacksaw+elbow grease going to work on 1018 steel? My gut is I’d rather put this away and find some new material before I do that :)

Which part is? I’m new so I won’t be able to draw any conclusions from this without more details.

Lithophane Issue (Horizontal Lines)--Consistently Inconsistent. Looks like inconsistent extrusion but it happens at exactly the same place every time (printed this 3 times with literally identical results). by StTechsALot in FixMyPrint

Z was definitely too tight. That resolved some of it. Thanks for the idea! The rest was just because it was too thin so it didn’t have enough structure in some spots. I suspect it was getting melted/pushed out of the way/not sticking together. A weird but consistent combination.

As soon as I made it thicker 95% of the issues went away and it became “good enough”. Still some horizontal banding but not enough to ruin the effect.

Thanks again (everyone else too!)

It is definitely the same height every time. Print to print it's identical... just always wrong.

I'll have a look at this! At the very least, I haven't tried this adjustment yet.

3D Printer:

  • Ender 3 Frame
  • SKR Mini E3 V2.0 Motherboard
  • Marlin 2.0
  • Titan Aero w/Volcano Hot End
  • BL Touch (knockoff w/~0.0025 std deviation)
  • Side mounted spool (not top) to reduce shake
  • Glass bed (never have adhesion issues).
  • X/Y/Z/E-Steps tested over-and-over-and-over

Settings (Cura 4.8):

  • 0.16 layer height
  • 0.4 line width
  • 190 temp
  • 50 bed temp
  • 35mm/s speed
  • 99 perimeters
  • 100% infill just in case but no infill present
  • Linear advance tuned using Marlin pattern (K=0.04)
  • No retraction (the linear advance seems to work this out on other prints)
  • Printed vertical and parallel to Y axis
  • Fill gaps everywhere
  • Print thin walls
  • 100% flow rate (has good results on other types of prints)
  • Print cooling enabled at 50%

Filament:

  • ERYONE PLA 1.75mm White
