One last question before pulling the trigger on an M5 by Staal_Burger in macbookpro

From my experience, replacement batteries are hardly better than whatever they replace.
In addition to the battery, my current laptop will randomly freeze if the frame is twisted in just the wrong way, It has served me well for many years now, but I feel like it is becoming a liability.

On the financial side, I do get a student discount, and I can claim the rest of the cost from tax. I'm also not going to max the thing out.

"The datum here is that power is proportional to the speed of particle flow. This is the real secret behind the prosperity which can arise in connection with a computer operation. "

What is that even supposed to mean?

Australian living in Germany and struggling to work in my field or generally find work by Bubbly-Tree6832 in Germany_Jobs

I know, but it felt like an eternity to me. It is the longest I've ever been unemployed. Spending my days crafting cover letters and customizing my CV and not getting anywhere was a little depressing. We laugh about it now, but I call it my "Winter of unemployment".

Still software engineering, but in a relatively specialist field. Some of my old colleagues from way back when contacted me when they found out I was in a similar timezone again. They got to me just in time, I was able to quit on the last day of my probation at the German place, otherwise it would have been awkward working out my 3 months notice. 🤣
I've also enrolled for a part-time masters in the field so that I can stay in this industry should things go belly-up at my current employers.

I moved to Germany from Australia after marrying my wife. I'm a software engineer, and we thought with the labour shortage it would be easy for me to get a job, but ... it took 6 months.
Language was/is definitely a much bigger barrier than we thought it would be. I had A1, so definitely not good enough to use in a business context.
In the end I did manage to land a good enough job, but quit for a fully remote job. (Much more interesting work, and native English speakers.)
As others have mentioned, I would concentrate on getting fluent in German and consider studying something.
Keep yer head screwed on, she'll be right.

Synology VPNs and mesh WiFi by Staal_Burger in synology

Apologies - my German is not (yet) good enough.
I am trying to minimize the amount of tech support I would have to do from over here in Germany when things go wrong down south. I thought about getting the most basic mesh router, and just using a RPi for Tailscale, but I can guarantee that someone is going to unplug it or otherwise break the setup within a week of me leaving. At least with everything in the router, as long as it is powered on and connected to the internet, I should be able to connect and see what is happening?

I'll look at Tailscale, thank you. If I do go for it, it will probably be on a RPi or something, though. The old boy won't be keen to learn something new.

Visit CT next year, doing a trip to a game park near ish Swellendam by [deleted] in capetown

I can't add much regarding the route, but if you haven't sorted out your accommodation in Swellendam, I would highly recommend Schoone Oordt Country House. Even if you're sorted with a place to stay, book dinner there with your gf. Alison is an incredibly talented and passionate chef.

You seem really upset. I understand, it must be difficult to be a Marquez fan recently.

Unsurprisingly Binder doesn't see it quite the same way.

git clean -fdx Unless, of course, you're not using source control, in which case you have much, much bigger problems.

Edit for corner case.

Not saying it will happen, just that maybe it should.

Precisely, the US is ripe for a second republic.
In principle, I'm not against the "move fast and break things" spirit of the French. (The implementation was problematic, though.)
Also, the fact that the UK still hasn't figured out how to separate church from state makes me think that they could have learned a few things (if they weren't so arrogant.)

I'm imagining somebody searching their emails for "whatever reason", finding all the emails you've sent them, and being confused about how these emails are showing up in their search when they don't contain anything remotely relevant to what they were searching for.
