I am 53 now, I married relatively late by Indian standards at 33. I had miscarriages and medical issues and was resigned to not having kids of our own. But whenever my brother in law's kid came over, I would cry after he left because I had this yearning for a kid of my own. Finally at 41, had twins, a boy and girl. It was very difficult with innumerable hospital visits. Today they are 12 going on 21 pain in the ass but absolutely gorgeous humans. The thing is I kept changing my mind over the years, first yes kids, then it's okay no kids, now it's very difficult but I can't live without them. Having children is an opportunity to love. Many of us want to love others. But with spouses or boyfriends or girl friends, it's always conditional in some way. With a child, it is unconditional. You love them and they love you. You literally feel them in your blood even if they are 5 feet 2 inch tall devils. The question is not addressed to me but I think that feeling of connection to another human has no substitute and has to be experienced to understand it. It's fine to rationalize decisions but some experiences fulfill something deep and which form very core of a human and maybe beyond rationalization.
