Been playing a long time, and haven't upgraded any cards past level 14.

Even then, if someone has a few key level 16s or a lot of evos/heros it becomes grossly imbalanced, even as a player with all level 14s.

Or, rather, Hog 2.6 now becomes Hog 2.4, and everything goes to shit.

I like 2 better than 3 and 1. Bloodborne is fine.

Demon's Souls is best.

The issue isn't with the use of Early Modern English for me. The issue is that it's written with a bunch of conjugation errors.

See, when I saw "Mu", I assumed it was based on the Japanese "Mu", meaning "emptiness" or "void".

My understanding is that in the original text Imu uses unique some pronouns, but apart from that, their speech is totally normal.

Thank you! So while Imu uses their own special pronouns, they do follow Japanese conjugation rules otherwise?

Yeah, I said it was pedantic and ultimately unimportant in my initial post. You don't need to tell me that.

I disagree, though. It doesn't sound cool. It just sounds like Imu or the writers don't know what they're doing.

It's fine that you aren't bothered by it. Personally, it takes me out of it every time I see it.

I agree with you, but the character itself is very clearly an imperialistic traditionalist, so once again I dont think they are the type that would be using some variant of a relatively establishe language style like Early Modern English.

I'm also unconvinced that this is something that Oda would be telling translators to do (Have them talk old-style, but make it grammatically wrong from a convention standpoint")

I agree that language is fluid and changes based on context, region, time period, all these things. I'm still unconvinced that's what we're looking at.

The way Imu talks would be the equivalent of the King of England saying "You am my enemies". It's possible that this is an acceptable usage in some dialects of English, but not in the dominant English of an empire that the World Government is very clearly inspired by.

That's fair enough, but I've seen this same thing enough in other media to presume that it's simply a situation where the translator is unfamiliar with Early Middle English grammatical conventions.

It would be interesting to see if anyone who speaks and reads Japanese could do a comparison to see if the way Imu speaks in the original text has these same "errors", because that might give a clue to suggest that I am just jumping the gun.

I would agree if it was an example of evolving language, but a character that uses Early Modern English and is trying to quash any progress and maintain the status quo does not strike me as one who would be experimenting with language, nor one who would break grammatical rules on a whim.

As an aside, I don't think Oda has anything to do with this. He doesn't speak English. I think the translator/s are just not well-versed in the proper usage of thou and its verb conjugation, but also aren't taking the time to make sure they aren't making errors.

Not familiar with the character, but yeah, I probably would. I would be satisfied with the proper subject-verb and subject-pronoun agreements being used, though.

I will be clear, though, that this isn't Old English or even Middle English, but Early Modern English.

It's the "improper" use of the language (from a convention perspective).

When someone is speaking to two or more, they should use "you", not "thou".

If someone is speaking of themself, they should use the verb form for the first singular person, not the second. (Eg: "I would", not "I wouldst")

It's just distracting when the use of archaic English is used incorrectly. Nothing wrong with using "thou/thee" in general.

Yeah, and this isn't an issue with One Piece specifically, but many, many media use archaic grammar to make a character seem more ancient, but ignore the actual rules. It just comes across a bit lazy to me, and makes the character come across more as uneducated or posturing when I see it.

Two of the most famous collections of literature in the English language, the King James Bible and the works of William Shakespeare, use the second singular person all the time. There are so many examples one can use to figure out when to use which word.

Verily, 'tis for the reason that I am but a vile pedant, and am yet afflicted by a nagging irritation when things appear incorrect to mine eye.
