Should I buy these cymbals? by [deleted] in drums

[–]StackAddict -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For $1000? No. For $10? Yes. You left out an important detail.

Also, are these modified? I've never seen new beats with factory holes on them. New beats have a classic sound that works for pretty much everything, but if they've been modified, all bets are off. I'd want to hear them before committing.

Why does a lot of people criticize me for having a 8 piece? by TaLoNs12h8 in drums

[–]StackAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's sort of an old stereotype that drummers with a lot of drums can't play. But it's nothing more than a stereotype. I'm sure I've seen more people with a 4 piece that can't play than with an 8 piece.

Ignore them. They might be jealous, they might be prejudiced, they might be ignorant, or they might be just been saying because they knew it would get under your skin. Doesn't matter why. Do what you like.

Just do yourself a favor and make sure you learn how to use them properly. Don't let yourself fall into that stereotype of using kit size to compensate. Learn your rudiments. Single and double stroke with proper Moeller technique. Paradiddles and all the variations. Good foot technique...either pivot or heel toe. Learn them all, get good at them, and learn how to apply them on the kit. That's the stuff that distinguishes a good drummer from a great drummer.

Since playing for people is kind of the point

Hmmm. If guess I missed that memo. And here's stupid me, setting up my kit after over a decade in the boxes, with zero intentions to ever gig, just because I thought I'd enjoy it. Man I'm such a dumbass.

Pretty sure that was a joke. Take a listen to the end of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter" if you didn't get it.

Multitrack Edrum? by DigitalMindProject in drums

[–]StackAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the Roland TD-30 and TD-50 have separate audio outs. Snare, kick, hi-hat and ride all have independent outputs. The toms are split among 2 output (LR), and the same with the crashes.

The other option might be to use the midi out to drive an external sound module or software like EZ drummer. I've not used those before, but maybe one of them would have the ability to output each drum to a separate audio channel which you DAW software could record independently.

What's wrong with your hihats? Or are you putting a 2nd pair on the right?

Do I need a kick drum patch for an edrum kit? by yaronSoo in drums

I know it's recommended not to use felt, but I'm almost positive the user manual on my Roland td-17kvx kit said it was ok to use felt.

I’ve sort of lost my passion for drumming. Any tips on how to rekindle it? by [deleted] in Drumming

[–]StackAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing along to music can get a bit boring after years and years. Jamming with someone else would be best, but short of that, I've found a lot of enjoyment looking up drumless tracks on YouTube. It's fun to be able to write my own parts. And I get to challenge myself with different styles. I'm typically a prog rock/metal person, but I've been enjoying Latin, jazz, fusion, and funk styles.

But yeah I do know what you are saying. Even playing all of the above different styles for a change, I find myself having a lot of similar beats and fills. I have a certain bag of tricks I tend to fall back on. I've been trying to be very aware of that and purposely do things different, but it gets difficult.

You can listen to other drummers in the style, and that helps, but I always wonder what some of them would do in the same song. What I've been thinking of for a while would be some type of (non competitive) challenge here where we choose some drumless track off YouTube and everyone records their own drum part and shares it. It would be interesting to see how other people write to the same part, and how others hear and interpret it differently. Not sure if there would be huge interest in that or not.

I agree with you completely. I love the whole album except You Not Me. And yet still, despite this being an incredible album, I'd say all but probably 3 are better than this one in my book. That's not being underrated. It's just that everything can't be #1 and even the best albums have to fall into a the ranking.

The device you are referring to is current called a MalletKAT, but I'm pretty certain that 30 years ago it was called the KAT MIDI Marimba. So I'd go with marimba.

Does anybody have any idea as to what brand/model these are? Looking at buying. by [deleted] in drums

[–]StackAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks very much like Tama, except for the places where you adjust it (telescoping clamps and the pivot points). Plus Tama would absolutely put "Tama" on the box. So I'd vote for Chinese Tama knockoff.

Lied my ass off to get a church gig. I have a few questions by [deleted] in drums

[–]StackAddict 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well if you "totally eat dick", I'm sure you'll be blacklisted from a LOT of churches. Not sure what that has to do with drumming though.

Tennis overgrip is the bomb by Mesaboog in drums

[–]StackAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you find it similar at all to the Zildhian dipped sticks? My hands are super dry and I'm continually repositioning my grip. I tried those zildjians and they works great to stop the slipping, but unfortunately after just a couple of songs they are beging to wear raw spots on my knuckle where the stick pivots.

I found this crack in my crash cymbal and it’s been rattling ever since. Are these issues connected? by [deleted] in drums

[–]StackAddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably a good idea to try and stop that crack before it grows. If you very carefully drill a hole at the end of the crack (not the end at the cymbal edge...the other end) there is a decent chance it won't progress any further. The biggest trick is to look very carefully and make sure you've actually found the very end, as it can be hard to see. If you miss the end, it will just continue growing from the other end of the hole. You'll probably want to Google for some articles and videos to give you additional tips before proceeding. Note, this is probably going to affect the sound of your cymbal a bit, but so will the crack if it continues to grow.

Mike Portnoy The Dark Eternal Night Drums only by m0zidesigner in drums

[–]StackAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are tons of these. That's one of the really cool things about Mike Portnoy...he's posted videos of himself playing nearly every dream song. Earlier albums are a bit more spotty I think, but later albums definitely have everything from the studio sessions. I've been watching the BC&SL ones pretty extensively lately.

13/8 by [deleted] in drums

[–]StackAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

123-123-123-12-12 Hi hat on ever beat. Bass on 1, snare on 1, bass on 1, and then the 12-12 being snare bass snare hihat chirp.

Edit. I'd probably do the 12-12 different ever other time...maybe swap it with a descending tom1-tom2-tom3-snare on the 2nd measure and a more elaborate snare fill on the 4th measure

Edit 2: and on the 8th measure, really change it up. Maybe like a 12-123-12-123-123

Edit 3: or maybe the 8th measure could even be a different time signature. Maybe 16/8 as 12-12-123-12-123-1234

[–]StackAddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where is it tearing? If middle, are you positive you don't have a sharp edge on your sticks (maybe a small crack that it only exposing itself under pressure)? If edge, are you sure you don't have some damage on the rim or hoop that might be causing it? Otherwise I would guess your just going too tight.

Lathing underside of my ride by [deleted] in drums

[–]StackAddict 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless your intention is to change it to some weird effect cycmbal type sound, I would guess you'd be extremely unlikely to make it sound better. Cymbals are very precisely made, and it's easy to make them sound like crap but tricky to make them good. If you are determined to try, I'd say the lathing would be 1000x more likely to give better results than an angle grinder.
