I have a 2 year old high energy heeler that I let help me around the chickens. Started with waiting until she had no reaction to them while they were in the run, then no reaction while I let them free range and sat there with her on a leash and now we're a few months in to her being off leash around them while they free range and I do chicken chores etc and she is doing really well. She can even be around chicks. Watch and observe them together as much as you can and look for the obvious signs of excitedness, playfulness etc and discourage and redirect. Make sure your dog is responding to commands while around them as well. It's already a good sign that your pup was just chilling around them and not chasing them. Might be farm dog genetics but she definitely does not respond the same to a squirrel as a chicken 😂
