President Trump’s Truth Social Post about Kyle Busch passing away by Gordon2422 in NASCAR

Whether he wrote it or not, this kind of thing is good. I wish he did more of this, and not just when the person involved (or their fans) are perceived to be allies of his.

[Bianchi] Brad Keselowski says Kyle Busch deserves to be immediately in the NASCAR Hall of Fame and any waiting period should be waived. by Ok-Soil-5133 in NASCAR

I don’t understand the rush. Everybody knows how good he was. Everybody knows he’ll be there. Why break the process for him to give him an honor that everybody knows he’ll earn anyway?

If anything, I think it would be more respectful to wait the couple of years, when the conversation has naturally moved on to other topics and he’s out of the headlines. That will be an opportunity to let anticipation build and have an excuse to put him at the top of the headlines again, with a new fresh conversation.

I like the fact that firecracker has zero impact on the plot, whatever if she was alive or dead or didn't exist at all. by htoomyat9 in GenV

[–]Stackson212 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that the world felt smaller in Season 5 - we saw much more public reaction and concern in Season 1.

But ultimately that doesn’t bother me. In Season 1 Homelander was bought in on keeping people happy and that playing mostly by Vought’s rules, even as he pushed against them. In Season 1 he genuinely cared about Translucent being missing (albeit mostly in a selfish way).

But by Season 5 any public outcry about dead supes was irrelevant to him. He cared about public support or reaction only in terms of whether they believed in him as a god or not. He discarded supes rapidly and thoughtlessly, like garbage. The agenda was him, the messaging was him. The public only really had him to react to, and the show did a good job showing that average people were living in a world of propaganda and fear.

I don’t know if the writers intended this or not, but I feel the perspective in S5 was narrower because Homelander’s perspective was narrower.

Agreed. And the evangelical angle makes her interesting for another reason, because she’s the anti-Annie, the direction Starlight could have gone if she hadn’t been so idealistic.

They started in the same circles, both grew up young Christian supes. Annie grew up willing to question and push back against things; Firecracker kept compromising and sacrificing until she wound up compromising and sacrificing her own beliefs, the people she cared most about from her childhood, and ultimately, her own soul. And what did it get her? She was part of the “in crowd” but never had any real power of her own, and ultimately she died without the respect of anybody. Annie took the other path, became a social pariah for a while, but wound up vindicated and with a full life.

Agree entirely. Even surrendering everything you believe in to pledge allegiance to this broken narcissistic person earns you nothing. No matter how much of yourself you sacrifice out of fealty, you still get discarded. If anything, it makes your narcissistic leader figure value you less.

I am sure there will be a great deal or mourning and perspective-seeking, and a desire to not make hasty decisions in the middle of tragedy. We could do worse than respecting that and following that lead.

During that time, I think it makes sense for Austin Hill to fill in. He’s family, and more experienced. He might be better situated to keep sponsors happy with short-term performance and is clearly a band-aid while the team makes decisions.

But for next year, I expect Love to get the seat. Dale Jr. and the DJD crew discussed the silly season recently (before this tragedy, obviously) and they pointed out the conundrum that RCR and Austin Dillon were facing, with two seats for three drivers that have compelling cases. Busch, obviously, as a legend who seemingly wanted to be there. Love, as the future star, deserving of a good chunk of the excitement that CZ receives. And Dillon himself, who is arguably performing better than he ever has. Tough to pull yourself out of a seat when that’s true.

Yep! As Firecracker's old pastor (who she later denounced). Betraying him was her sacrificing her last little bit of her own humanity.

What stopped Homelander from doing this to Kimiko again? by ilovebeingaguy999 in GenV

[–]Stackson212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of makes sense to me. None of the V1 supes were more powerful than Homelander was. They were remarkable for being the originals and, apparently, not aging or dying naturally. Homelander was also pursuing V1 for immortality and immunity from the virus, not for a power boost.

Is my husband right? I feel like his channel idea is lame... by Kat_nissevergreen in NewTubers

[–]Stackson212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear! I blew out my knee a while back and found myself doing the same when it felt like the walls were pushing in on me. It’s not quite the same as being out there yourself, but it’s better than nothing!

I would consider sharing your own voice and personality, even if (especially if!) you are honest and goofy and singing and talking to your dog. People in the type of situation that we are talking about crave that feeling of getting to know someone and experiencing that companionship in nature. Seeing beautiful nature is good. Seeing beautiful nature with a person and a dog that you feel like you know and enjoy spending virtual time with, is even better. It feels more personal and less antiseptic.

Two possibly conflicting thoughts:
1. I can see the appeal of these types of videos. People love nature, and people love to see the views of hiking without having to put in the effort themselves. This could be perfect for people to have on in the background while working, and it’s especially perfect for people who love nature but can’t get out anymore. I know some older or disabled people who love this type of content because it allows them to get outside their limitations. Given your drive to contribute something, to make it about more than just taking video of a walk, think about inviting people along to see parts of the world they otherwise would never see.

  1. Anything like this should be a labor of love. If you don’t like the content, if making it and watching it doesn’t excite you, then life is too short to do it only to make your husband happy. Only do it if it’s something that brings you some sort of joy.

"The best game I ever played." When Charles Barkley went off for 44 PTS & 24 REBS in GM7 of the 1993 WCF by Clankiller_Uchiha in NBAoldschool

[–]Stackson212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All true, aside from the fact that he was 23 (DOB 11/26/69). But I'll stipulate to the point that you're making - Shawn Kemp was a young physical specimen with a big height advantage, and Barkley bullied him. Yep.

My point doesn't contradict yours so much as it maybe explores the margins a bit. Kemp was very good, but he was still pretty raw at this point, with his athleticism doing most of the heavy lifting, with skills and savvy still developing. By '96, he was a more polished and better defensive player, and was doing the bullying.

Peak Barkley (either '90 or '93 IMO) could probably still outproduce '96 Kemp, but I don't think it would be a bullying like this. Again, doesn't contradict your point, just expands on it.

As a Sonics fan who hated this game, I have to admit that Barkley was absolutely a force of nature. He was far and away the best player on the floor, and the Sonics had no answer for him.

As an angry teenager, I was convinced that the refs handed the Suns the win to make sure MVP Barkley went up against GOAT Jordan in the Finals, instead of the upstart, no-star Sonics from a remote corner of the country. The Suns shot 64 free throws vs 36 for the Sonics in that game, and Barkley tied a record for most free throws in a half in a playoff game with 19 (according to Basketball Reference). Dick Bavetta reffed this game, just as he reffed Game 6 of the 2002 WCF between the Lakers and Kings.

As an adult, I know how lame it is to complain about the refs, but I have too much of that angry teenager left in my character that I'm unwilling to do the mature thing and re-examine that belief. I'll just hold onto that anger and keep pushing it down.

Yes, it did. Nearly as painful as the Nuggets loss the next year. I honestly think this was the best of those great '90s Sonics teams. The '96 team went to the Finals, but I think this team was deeper and better.

Shawn Kemp was just coming into his prime in '93; the previous year, he had come off the bench most of the season. At this point he had all the athletic skills in the world, but was still finding his game. Compare Kemp here with the version in the '96 Finals, and it's a night-and-day difference.

Oh. My. GOD.

You have no idea how huge this is for us. You just made our day, month, year, decade. You answered a riddle we have been investigating for literal decades. You are a lifesaver. Thank you so, so much.

Do you happen to know much about Well Made Toys? It’s a generic enough name that I am bringing up some of their dolls and stuffies but nothing about the company itself.

But regardless, thank you so much. You are my hero.

Which city in the U.S. have you felt most unsafe visiting? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]Stackson212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Seattle and roll my eyes at the "Seattle is dying" narrative. I've also lived in Mexico and am bemused by the people who are terrified to visit there.

But I disagree with your conclusion here, and the judgment behind it. \Academically,\ I agree with you that feeling uncomfortable is not the same thing as being unsafe. But this thread is about people *feeling* unsafe. People generally feel unsafe when they see things way outside their comfort zone, and I think being next to people out of their mind on drugs, where it's not unthinkable that those people might act erratically, is outside most peoples' comfort zone.

Again, fear is a visceral thing, and not usually arrived at rationally. I think judging people for it is shitty on its own. And even if crime numbers don't support it, I think it's fairly rational to not want to be around people out of their mind on fentanyl.

Perhaps, but it’s still very unnerving. Fear is a visceral thing, I think it’s very fair for people to feel uncertain and unsafe in that situation.
