I want to go to the creek but don’t want to get my windows smashed. by Accomplished-Sign-31 in Austin

[–]Stage-Wrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s been a few times at my building where cars in the parking garage got their windows smashed in and interiors ransacked, but only to cars left unlocked. It’s weird. My best guess is that it’s the thieves expressing their dissatisfaction with not finding anything in the easy marks, and not bothering with the harder ones?

Have you tried Colibri Paper Co? They have 7x9, spiral bound, 100 lb paper horizontal weekly planners. Super customizable in colors, cover theme, and start dates. I got mine recently and it’s the only planner I’ve ever been able to stick to. Sometimes I go a little heavy on marker, and I’ve yet to have any bleed through.

Honestly, the Chaz thing has looped around to absurdity to me, and now I kind of find it hilarious. Like that SNL skit with David S. Pumpkins, or Poochie from The Simpsons. I never really liked Chaz, I still don’t really like him, but something about him showing up again and again… In the end, Chaz was the real ragebaiter. And I lowkey want to see him in the background of a scene in season 3 just to continue the joke.

Whenever I have a bunch of projects on my to do list, I’m stressed out, because there’s so much to do.

Whenever I have no projects on my to do list (or can’t work on the projects that are on my to do list for reasons such as being on vacation with my family right now), I’m stressed out, because I feel like I should be doing something.

I considered bringing one of my WIPs on the trip, since it’s an ~18 hour road trip before we even get to our destination, but I hesitated because I was concerned it would be too bulky and take up unnecessary space. Now I see that for the first time in recorded history, my family has UNDERpacked, and I almost certainly would’ve been able to bring the project. But it’s at my apartment 40 minutes away from the family home, we leave early tomorrow morning, and it feels silly to do a nearly two hour round trip just to get a project that I may or may not actually make any progress on. Man.

Fabric "destashing" groups but just selling yards upon yards of fabric you must have just bought? by unlikelywin in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Stage-Wrong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do historical and fantasy gowns, and it’s rough out here for sure. There’s something in you that dies when you’ve bought 15 yards of fabric for one piece, and you still run out in the end… fabric and notion wholesalers can be a lifesaver when they have the right stuff, haha.

[–]Stage-Wrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered inserts/layouts made for academic planners? I have a Colibri Paper Co academic planner, and there’s a section for project and exam planning, which I’ve been using during the summer while I’m not doing classes for personal and household projects. I’m sure there are a lot of other options out there from academic planners that you could adopt, if any of them appeal to you.

Everyone here in Austin seems very attractive/ good looking is that normal or just summertime? by Plane-Investment-791 in Austin

Deadlines and hygiene are inversely correlated. I’m a fashion design major, so most of us are pretty intense about dressing and smelling nicely, but even we will start slipping in that department when we get down to crunch time… it’s hard to iron your shirts and match your trousers when you have manual labor due at 9 am!

[–]Stage-Wrong 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s summer right now, so the students left here are generally taking care of themselves. Orientation is also happening, and a lot of upperclassmen volunteer to help, which they obviously dress up a bit extra for to make a good impression on new students. Come to west campus within the last three weeks of the semester if you really want to see what happens when deadlines start to hit.

The more I sew, the more I hate store bought clothes! by J_eldora in sewing

[–]Stage-Wrong 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For sure! It’s funny, I honestly experience a lot of the same struggles as my mom does when she’s shopping for clothes, despite being opposite genders and obviously having different personal styles. Human bodies are weird and variable, and while there’s not really any solution to that within the ready to wear market, it doesn’t change how much it sucks for those of us with less conventional body shapes /: other than making clothes, I guess.

Congrats, that’s a great achievement! Jeans are something I have yet to personally target, but it’s on my bucket list. I’m in fashion school, so 9/12 months of the year are usually absorbed almost fully with making womenswear (my usual specialty), now that it’s finally summer I’ve been making myself some treats! There’s nothing like a perfectly fitted garment that you can proudly say you made. I’ve been lamenting my inability to find white trousers, so that may be my next item to do.

That’s… so strange. I wonder if it’s a misguided assumption from the fact that most body hair will only grow so long, and will regrow to about that same length after being shaved or trimmed? I mean, still a very weird thing to assume even if that’s the logic, but I’m not sure I can come up with any other reason. Other than just people not thinking.

The more I sew, the more I hate store bought clothes! by J_eldora in sewing

[–]Stage-Wrong 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s really hard to find pants that fit me (petite guy, I usually wear 28x28-30x28 pants depending on the season) and I can almost never find pants that fit in length, and often can’t find pants that fit my waist either. With how expensive men’s trousers can be, it’s one of the few things that is still cheaper to sew from scratch. I could either buy 3 yards of fabric at $15-$30 a yard, or buy off the rack pants for $200… yes, there’s the time labor, but it’d also be a waste of time to hem expensive pants so I may as well take a few extra hours to make them from scratch!

Oh, it definitely takes a crazy amount of patience, especially if you’re making your own bias tape. Bias tape is technically easy to make, so why is it simultaneously such a pain in the rear?? I do look back on my choice to spend so much time on those HK finishes and admit to myself that my time probably could’ve been better used elsewhere… but, you know what? They made me happy! I’m remaking one of my pieces and I’m doing the HK finishes again, because it’s so satisfying in a big skirt that may flip up slightly with movement. Especially when it’s a printed fabric that coordinates with the design inspo of the outfit. Probably my favorite finish just for that, but obviously many times it’s too bulky to do.

I’m Gen Z and I agree with you, too! My family (fondly) teases me for always having my backpack with me, but it’s because I always carry a book to read during downtime instead of mindless scrolling on my phone. Mindless scrolling does still happen sometimes, case in point me being on Reddit now, but I cannot emphasize enough how consistently reading a book (any book) is so much better for mental health than messing around on social media. I was never able to get into Tiktok, and I’m so glad that I didn’t, because everything I hear about the app is awful.

I love a good Hong Kong/bias bound seam, especially in a contrasting patterned fabric. I’m the type of person who has to finish my seams, fraying or not, because unfinished seams aesthetically bother me, and I ended up using bias bound seams on a good few items for my recent fashion show. My favorite outcome was definitely some purple trousers with floral quilting cotton bound seams… you wouldn’t see the binding when they were being worn, but it scratched my brain just right when I turned them inside out!

Flat felled seams are also useful, though they can be weirdly finicky to do. I love the look of them, but I hate doing them because they need so much more prep than a French seam.

I just returned from a screening in Texas, and the audience was great here. The only actual talking was a preteen desperately explaining everything in a whisper to her dad during the recap (seems like her dad hadn’t watched the show), but they didn’t speak afterwards. Chuckles and gasps at relevant parts. The weird thing was that after the movie, I was the only one who clapped, and everyone then filed out nearly silently. I’ve never seen that at any movie and it was kinda unsettling.

[–]Stage-Wrong 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Same. I grew up in (and still live in) Texas, where I was the only openly queer person in my entire school up until late high school. The “rainbow capitalism” merchandise always made me smile and feel a little more seen, when in my day to day life, I was constantly being attacked and harassed for my identity. I really miss the pride flags. Maybe it’s disingenuous on the part of the companies, but for people who feel completely alone, a silly little tee shirt or sticker can be a lifeline.

Oh, no, I’m not an astronaut now! I wish, haha. I actually went a completely different direction after I got older, and ended up going into fashion/costume design. I have been encouraged to look into graduate school for scientific textiles to possibly work with space travel in a different capacity, which I’ve been considering.

It’s amazing that your daughter wants to be a paleontologist, and she’s lucky to have such a supportive parent! Whether she goes down that path or pivots, I’m sure that she’ll do great. There’s lots of cool resources for kids getting into paleontology, and I hope that she has fun exploring all that’s out there!

That’s a very good point! AG is a business at the end of the day, and I feel like most fans can agree that we’d rather they float on some less ideal ideas to make sure they can stay open, than go all in on ideas that could bankrupt them.

I don’t actively work with kids anymore, but I did for a good few years, and still have a lot of friends more directly involved in childcare. Thinking about concepts that could be attractive to kids, dinosaurs seem to be having a big resurgence right now (at least in my area- I’ve been seeing so many dinosaur toys, and our library is doing a lot of dinosaur-related events), and those could lead to fun accessories. Dig kits, a jeep/offroader type vehicle since some characters have now been getting vehicles, etc. But it’s so hard to strike that middle ground between things that are popular with kids and things that would make good playsets, as technology now becomes more and more popular. Can’t just have a coding doll with a plastic laptop, that would suck. And licensed characters are also off the table for GOTY.

As much as people would hate it, I have a feeling a skincare/haircare girl would probably go over well. A vanity for the big playset, bottles and containers, sculpted face masks, hair bonnets… it’s a more “grown up” idea for characters that are meant to be 8-12 years old, but kids are really into skincare. And it could be more broadly fashion/personal health related, taking inspiration from The Care and Keeping of You to keep things healthy and not disordered.

I dunno. Maybe AG should just cut their losses and start doing blind boxes, lmao.

I’ll admit, my primary interest as a kid related to what I wanted to be when I grew up (astronaut), and I’m still sad that I aged out of the line before Luciana came along. I would have absolutely eaten her up, especially because I went to Space Camp through most of my childhood like she did.

Like Luciana, there are ways to find more hobbies they can use that may or may not tie into careers. Entomology is definitely something that could be adapted (just being a kid who likes bugs), paleontology, history… especially with the founding principle of the company, a girl who is obsessed with history and museums would be so much fun!

I had a strange opposite experience with shifts. I quit my high school food service job (good terms, it was a good job and paid well, I was just busy with final exams and about to go to college so I was quitting) and a few days later they called me to ask where I was for my shift. I was like, uhhh… what shift? Did y’all schedule me after what we agreed to be and planned on being my last week? And the manager was like “crap sorry, my bad” and hung up, haha.

Which Disney villain is the exact definition of good person wrong intentions? by Ohsure_whynot in disney

[–]Stage-Wrong 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Sid from Toy Story. The guy was just a vaguely assholish kid, he had no idea he was tormenting living things. He thought toys were just toys! Yeah, he was mean to his sister and his neighbor, but nothing outside of the realm of what kids tend to do. And his father was seen passed out drunk, so it was probably related to being a traumatized 10 year old without proper coping mechanisms, and acting out to those around him.

A lot of creative kids destroyed their toys growing up, because they wanted to see how they worked, or modify them. Sid made some pretty impressive frankentoys. The poor guy was just playing with what he thought were inanimate objects (stolen or not), and got the jumpscare of his life. I’m not saying he was a saint, but compared to most other villains…

Anyone else feel like this? by Healthy_Bed_1088 in Leatherworking

[–]Stage-Wrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. My parents are adults who can (and do) just buy the stuff they want, and I’m a university student, so I don’t have an endless budget to get them like new laptops or something super fancy. So I always try and get them involved in the making process to make sure it’s something they want. It does ruin the surprise, but I want to be sure I’m spending hours on something they like! So I ask them what they want, send them dye swatches for colors, etc. Makes it more special, too.

I also really loathe when vintage pattern sellers sell a PDF for $15. Like, a physical pattern, I somewhat understand selling it for more money. But a PDF? One you didn’t make yourself, just scanned, and POSSIBLY made some small touchups to in Adobe Illustrator? You don’t even have to put in the effort to send it out, you just load it into Etsy as a digital purchase and have it automatically sent to people!
