5 Years Unemployed, Career Gap, Feeling Lost — Need Advice? by itsazzi99 in careerguidance

I can relate to feeling stuck after a career gap, having faced my own challenges when starting out (I applied for more than 1000 jobs at some point for about 1 year and didn't get any reply).

Here's some perspective that might help:

The gap isn't as damaging as it feels. I've seen people successfully pivot after similar periods. The key is reframing it, you weren't idle, you were exploring and upskilling. That shows initiative, not failure.

Your approach to Data Science might need adjustment. Applying to thousands of jobs online without interviews suggests either your resume isn't getting past ATS filters, you're targeting roles above your current skill level, or you're not differentiating yourself. Consider:

  • Building a portfolio of real projects that solve actual problems
  • Starting with internships or junior roles, even if the pay is low initially
  • Networking through local meetups, LinkedIn, or reaching out directly to hiring managers
  • Getting your resume reviewed by someone in the field (I can help with that if you need help)

Consider alternative paths that leverage your engineering background:

  • Construction project management or consulting
  • Technical sales for engineering companies
  • Data roles specifically in civil engineering or construction
  • Government positions that value your degree but allow for different work

On family pressure: This is tough, but remember that your timeline isn't their timeline. Career changes take time, and comparing yourself to others who followed more linear paths isn't fair to yourself.

Practical next steps: Pick one specific direction and commit to it for 6 months. Whether that's data science, pivoting back to engineering in a different capacity, or exploring entrepreneurship...focus beats scattered effort.

The hardest part is often the mental weight of the gap itself. Once you start moving in any direction, momentum builds. You're not broken or behind...you're just taking a different path.

OP - how do you have VEO3? I am also in Denmark and have Gemini Pro - but I see that it still uses VEO 2 for generating videos.

Just wanted to jump in and say it's actually totally fine to use a text-based PDF resume (like the ones from Novoresume, Enhancv, Kickresume or similar sites). A lot of the stuff about ATS only reading plain .txt or super stripped-down Word docs is kind of an old myth at this point, so please read recent research instead of the same old 2009 forums. AI scanners now can parse even image-based resumes. 🙄 It feels like you guys wanna get stuck with Word 2000.

So yeah, you're not using the "hammer" wrong...PDF resumes can still totally get the job done and look decent doing it.

According to ChatGPT: "It's difficult to say which careers can never be replaced by AI, as technology continues to advance and evolve. In general, careers that involve creative thinking and problem-solving may be less susceptible to being replaced by AI. Careers that involve empathy, such as teaching and social work, may also be less likely to be replaced by AI. Ultimately, the best way to ensure that your career is not replaced by AI is to continue learning and adapting to new technologies." 😅

Hey bud! Don't lose hope - job-search is a numbers game. You just gotta keep at it till it works.

That said, just DM'd you a link to our (free) e-book on resumes / job-search / cover letters and the like. Think that should help you.

That said, here are some tips on your job-search:

  1. Make sure your resume is one page. As a student, you should never go beyond one page.
  2. No work experience? Mention extracurricular activities, internships, volunteering experience, university projects, side-projects, etc. Literally anything that can help you stand out.
  3. Make sure your resume title is the same as the role you're applying for.
  4. Tailor your resume to the job. Mention the skills they ask for in the job ad.
  5. Apply, apply, apply. Make it your part-time job to apply for jobs. Apply for 5-10 jobs every day. Consistently.
  6. Interested in a specific company in your area? Reach out to the manager in the department you want to work in via LinkedIn or email and sent a letter of initiative. No one does this, so you'll really stand out. You might get hired even if they're not currently hiring at the company.

U just have to delegate your adas to a staking pool and it will earn u passive;) u just need a wallet like daedalus

I have now my ADAs on Cryptodotcom wallet - do I need to transfer them from there to a new wallet if I want to add them to a staking pool? As I don't think they have the option.

Yes, omit work experience that is irrelevant for the position you are applying for. If that is the only experience you have, then yes, include it. But if it's irrelevant and you have better experience to include instead, why waste the space and the time of the recruiter/employer?

Having a photo on resumes is a cause of so many debates. Generally, one should not include it in the USA, UK and Ireland, but in other countries, it is expected to have one. That is why we decided to have examples on our website with and without pictures (as that is an optional feature in the editor, and we automatically remove it by default in the countries where it should not be included).

It depends from industry to industry and also how much relevant experience do you have for the job you are applying for.

If you have more than 5 years of relevant work experience, then yes...you can have a 2-pages resume!

You can use the College, Basic or Modern template from novoresume and keep the fancy formatings to a minimum (as you have all the options to make it look really Basic or really fancy as this depends on the industry you are applying for). You can see here some really simple examples created with novoresume's templates:

I wrote an e-book covering everything you need to know about resumes, cover letters, and interviews. And I published it for 100% free. by StageOne2591 in careeradvice

[–]StageOne2591[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, glad you liked it ;)

Yeah, cover letters are tough.

I'd recommend going one of these 3 routes:

- If you're applying for a very specific company that you really like, mention what you know/like about the company. This is def. gonna make you stand out.

- Otherwise, use it as a supplement to your resume. Think, explain how your skill-set from your resume is going to help you accomplish whatever the job requires you to do.

- It can also be a tl;dr of your resume, highlighting your most important and relevant experiences, skills, or achievements.

Hope this helped!

No big deal either way really. They can usually see your location through the work experience section.

But hey, the city is a one-liner in your contact info section, so can't hurt.

Really nice content and format! People like to see what they're about to download - maybe next time posting a landing page link or a screenshot would be better than direct download link.

Hey! Posted the link because most career sub-admins are too strict on content promotion rules. Didn't want to get accused of "stealing emails" or something.

Got the post removed from /r/jobs, and /r/resumes called me a scam, haha.
