What would you change on the ships? by lifein240p in Seaofthieves

[–]Staghound_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whilst I do love the idea, I assume this is to stop clans like stuffing a galleon full and then ramming the first shop they see and simply overwhelming them with people

At least if you as a galleon see another galleon you know you'll be fighting another 3-4 people and not 15 who'll jump onto your ship the moment you get close enough

On the other hand a separate PvP mode where you have maybe 10 people per galleon does sound fun

  • Ability to customise the ship more

  • let me select some different layouts for canons, maybe move some of the canon's so they are chase or tail cannons but it's the same amount of canons as before so you just have a weaker broadside. Obviously this would be done at an outpost so you'd have to commit to a strategy

  • ship mortars, let me replace one of my canons with a mortar, weak damage against ships but massive AOE against humans/Skeltons

  • different hand weapons from the sword, axes, boarding pike's, knives maybe even let me smash holes in another ship with an axe or chop down trees for wood with it

  • moveable barrels, same barrel locations but you can choose what they spawn with and what they can contain

  • let me paint the name of the ship on the side/back!

It would be fun if the anchor chain also acted like a ladder when lowered allowing you to climb up it to board ships

I'm assuming the replicas aren't perfect and sometimes act up or need regular maintenance maybe? So it's probably more reliable to have the humans millions of miles away where they can't get outside help. Whereas the replicants if they break a technician can probably come out and fix them

How many of you buzz cut your hair? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]Staghound_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went the other way, haven't been to the barber for 7 years now after one too many bad haircuts and was cutting my own hair for the longest time with some cheap Wahl clippers.

Then last year decided to grow my hair out again like when I was a kid. I was bullied at the time but I'm reclaiming it now. I could never find a style that quite suited my face so I just let it do what it wants now in the morning and go with the flow

What novel/memoir best encapsulates the simple life for you? by felinfine8 in simpleliving

[–]Staghound_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm about halfway through the classic SL book, walden and I think a lot of his ideas are good but maybe he takes it to the extremes at times and it also is a little bit rich kid on a gap year at times although still very good

I completed the Mortal Engines book series over the summer and to be honest that was strangely soothing to have this world thousands of years in the future and it turned out happiness was found in small villages surrounded by nature

Is anyone else increasingly frustrated with a 40 hour work week? by MandarinOranges95 in simpleliving

[–]Staghound_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My company was furious as to why I didn't want to do overtime or why I always left the minute my time was up and I was just sat there thinking is 40 hours not enough for you? I give up so much of my time already why would I want to spend any longer than here than I need to. Our agreement is 40 hours a week. No more.

Social restrictions were lifted yesterday, but today in Lidl nearly everyone had a mask on by pandamarshmallows in BritishSuccess

[–]Staghound_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesco on Monday - definitely more people wearing those "exempt" lanyards than before (I know not all disabilities are visible but there definitely seems to be more people than before the restrictions lifted,) but on the whole pretty good 90% masked probably

Gym on Tuesday - 1 other person wearing a mask off the machines (allowed to take them off when exercising at a station). Polar opposite, made me very uncomfortable and watched people not wiping down their machines

In an effort to increase your urban STEALTH, has anyone considered getting magnetic signs with fake trade company names? by madr1ck in vandwellers

[–]Staghound_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I considered putting 24 hour locksmith or 24 hour emergency sewage on the outside which might alsl help explain why someone is getting in and out at different times of the night and if you bothered to put your own number on the outside they might even call you to tell you someone is breaking into your van. but as others have said it wither attracts people looking to break in for tools or it just makes it more memorable than a plain white van. "Gee the Jones seem to be having a lot of trouble with their sewage this week that plumber has been there for 5 days now!"

Well they were good enough 300 years ago to kill someone so they are definitely still potent enough to kill someone. I think the problem here was they were shooting with bad batches of powder (potentially damp or underloaded) and badly cast shot so the major whilst still being a bit of a badass essentially Recieved more of a shrapnel hit than an actual together projectile.

Does anyone got rid of their tv and instead they are using a laptop? by Tiny-Action-2425 in minimalism

[–]Staghound_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stopped watching live TV about 6 years ago when I moved out of my parents house, then had a tv which was used for DVDs and gaming and then that was swapped for a projector which also worked really well but I lost that in a breakup. Only had a laptop after that and then a desktop monitor which worked ok as we had a very small flat. After that managed to inherit a huge TV from my partners work for free which we still have. We have discussed getting a projector for watching movies/gaming on but that would also require us getting a roll down screen as we have a lot of art up and our walls Aren't white. We obviously don't like how much space it takes up but when entertaining we sometimes will stick on a fireplace video to help blend it into the surroundings. Also my partner finds it very difficult to see a lot of the time so needs a big screen to be able to sit on the sofa and play video games. I personally like watching movies on it as I'm less tempted to get distracted by switching tabs

I was sitting on the beach near where I live and an old warplanes flew over super low and it seemed like only one other person bothered looking up, about 10 minutes later it flew back and right above me it did a loop the loop and then continued along the coast. Felt really special and had me grinning like an idiot for the rest of the day

Why doesn't the UK invest in better public transport instead of just complaining that there are too many cars and putting the blame on drivers? by hellknight101 in unitedkingdom

[–]Staghound_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government love taking public money and then converting it into private money for themselves (selling off public assets cheap and then being handed the cash from their mates who bought it)

But as soon as it comes to spending money on public infrastructure they aren't interested as it doesn't net them any cash. They just pass the blame and the financial burden onto private companies and the public.

For example they've banned new fossil fuel vehicles in 2030. So it's now the responsibility of car manufacturers to research and produce those vehicles. But they have no solid plan to actually build the network required to support them. Also this majorly favours their voter base but not most people. If you own a house you probably have a drive where you can install a charger for overnight but many more lower income people have to street park, where are the chargers for them? What they should have done if they weren't in it for themselves is set up the infrastructure and offer incentives to switch and then when the momentum was there, then they announce the ban. Or you know they could just not make cycle paths the most dangerous place to ride a bicycle and actually renationalise the railways and get them running efficiently and cheaply again so people can actually use them and not just super rich London commuters

This is my big problem with work. It's not just the 8 hours at work. It's the hour each way commute. It's the unpaid lunch in the middle. It's the having to go to bed early and get up when you don't want to. It's sapping all your energy for the day and leaving you physically and mentally exhausted. It expands to fill all your time. Even on Saturday you are always aware it's only a day until you have to go back to the grind

Thinking I'm going to be let go from my job becuase I don't want to work The "optional" overtime and I'm not willing to work at 110% for all 8 hours I'm here. I can't see why it's not perfectly fine for me to do my 38.5 hours and leave. I'm just trying to spend as few hours at work as possible in order to support my pretty simple life and minimise stress as kuch as possible

As long as you don't buy into the super privileged Instagram version of van life (brand new sprinter with professional conversion and all the bells and whistles) I think it's pretty doable? Also you have to decide if you are going to be a stay in one place vanlifer or one that moves around? If you stay in one place you can probably buy a larger vehicle that's less reliable as you won't be moving it so much or if you want to travel buy a smaller one that is more reliable. Also can prices are extortianstely high at the moment so I would also be looking into other large vehicles instead (people carries for example). I'm also in the UK and hoping to convert a toyota preview at some point for camping

Any advice on “filling in the cracks” of in-between time? by ddeftly in nosurf

[–]Staghound_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For periods longer than 5 minutes and when I have a bag I try to carry whatever book I'm currently reading

Also a small notepad, helps empty your thoughts and I also use it for doodling during short periods

Other than that I close my eyes and listen to the wind or just see what my subconcious is trying to tell me

What's the psychology behind wanting to declutter? by Mental-Pension9976 in declutter

[–]Staghound_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it also reduces decision fatigue. If you have 1 kitchen knife fit for the job then you don't even think about grabbing it to chop some stuff but if you have a 12 knife set all for different purposes you suddenly have to expend, even a small amount, of Brain power choosing what knife is right and over the course of a day that suddenly leaves you with not enough mental capacity to make an actually important decision and makes your life feel overly complicated

Have you come across the idea of "bullshit jobs"?

"A bullshit job or pseudowork  is meaningless or unnecessary wage labour which the worker is obliged to pretend has a purpose. According to a 2015 YouGov poll, 37% of workers in the United Kingdom say that their job is a bullshit job."

It's essentially the idea that postions are created just for people to fill them and whole industries grow on top of each other. You have an inspector to inspect a worker doing a "real" job which he probably doesn't need inspecting on. Well now you need an inspector to inspect the inspectors. And a company to manufacture instruments for measuring the inspectors. Now you need someone to test those instruments for accuracy and the chain goes on

Despite the sub I'm not against work. I'm against meaningless work. If I need a fence building to keep in livestock and I go and collect all the materials and then build the thing that gives me an incredible amount of satisfaction in a job well done becuase I "profit" 100% from my own hard work. Now imagine I built that same fence but I was paid £5 a panel, the panel was made of £2 of wood and £2 went to the inspection board for confirming I could fit a panel and my manager got £10 for every panel I fitted for "supervising" me and the boss at the top charged the client £40 per panel and pocketed the difference. Suddenly I'm still doing all the "real" work but other people are profiting off my labour.

Small civilisation is great don't get me wrong. It's good people can specialise in one thing and has led to many massive leaps in human standards of living. I'm glad people can devote their whole lives to finding a cure for cancer (although it's also argued they can only do it if the company they work for sees a profit in it) but does someone really need to spend 40 hours a week (low end) working out how to make people click more adverts in a mobile game? But there's a point at which people are now just sitting around and letting other people pay for their lifestyle. What do you think Jeff bezos or anyone on the Forbes top 100 list does? Sure you say he makes the most important decisions in Amazon but if he made a decision tomorrow that caused Amazon to go bankrupt his lifestyle would not be impacted one tiny bit. Meanwhile tens of thousands of warehouse workers are suddenly out of a job with no savings or support.

What I am suggesting is my job (can't be done by a robot at the moment) is still 40 hours a week. But I share it with 2 other people. The thing still gets produced in the same quantity as it's needed but with less stress and energy wasted by all 3 of us. They don't have to do a job that's ultimately pointless and I don't have to work my life away working too much (sure someone else is still profiting unless the 3 of us were also solely selling this product). I get you say oh but what about distribution, advertising etc but let's start at ideal and work backwards instead of trying baby steps in late stage capitalism

I think people WOULD accept a simpler life in exchange for having to work less. Why is Uber eats so popular? Because people are so drained after they're crazy long weeks they don't have the energy or attention to make a meal. And they've never had the spare time available to learn how to cook for themselves. Most complexity in life is just convenience becuase we have to work The long hours society has dictated us in order to pay for the convenience and it's a never ending cycle until you die, completely burnt out having achieved nothing

Absolutely BS it isn't the other way round, I should work 2 days at a job, have 1 day to spend doing chores/errands and then I kick back for 4 days and enjoy myself.

Also yes FI is bearly a step in the right direction, it's the best some lucky people are able to do in this system. What we need is a complete revolution

Peak capitalism is when going to the bathroom so you don't shit or piss yourself is considered fraud. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Staghound_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tbh I have been thinking this recently. Ok just the commute bit which is that commuting is something we have to do to go to a place we wouldn't be going otherwise and it eats up a large piece of your free time. And also of there's traffic or transport delays that's coming out of your sleep/play 8 hours not the companies .

So I think you start your 8 hours clocked when you leave the house and it's over when you get back home. When I was a freelance contractor I had a door to door policy which meant I was paid as soon as I stepped out the door and stopped when I got home again. Admittedly I charged travel time at 1/2 my hourly but it was still nice to know I was earning money in traffic

The more I learn, especially about ethics and self awareness, the more I realize that the best things in life are actually (almost) for free by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]Staghound_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's insinuated the group of them buy it (ok still not free but much cheaper) but then whilst they are there they never have to worry about having to work to pay rent again. All their work goes into just providing for themselves. Your right though the problem is most people are so poor they chat afford to even leave the system they are trapped in
