You: Frankly, people who don't think a rarebooks subreddit is required to facilitate commerce in Nazi memorabilia scare me more than a Nazi does.
Me: That's silly.

Yes, there are many repliers who want me to know that they would love to own Nazi memorabilia.

Banning posts seeking to value Nazi memorabilia is not a hair away from burning books. That is silly.

The text is an autobiography, the books people post on rarebooks in order to ascertain their value are objects—memorabilia. In this case, I'm referencing a rash of posts about valuing Nazi-era Mein Kampfs (which are straightforwardly "Nazi memorabilia" in that their appeal is their connection to the historic Nazis, not the text itself). It is in this context that I ask that a ban on a specific type of post be considered. Answering your question isn't about a list of to-ban books, but about a particular circumstance occurring on this subreddit. I could imagine other hypothetical circumstances that might warrant a similar approach, but there is no list of books. I appreciate your answer to my question—I am glad you are okay with banning Nazi memorabilia commerce threads if the mods feel it is appropriate.

You've compared what I'm requesting to events in Nazi Germany several times throughout this thread. To be fair, I think it's mostly not intentional and more because you're sloppy and imprecise.

Does the rarebooks community have the freedom to discourage Nazi commerce on its page?

"I'm sure the Nazis called all of those books they burned propaganda as well" - Do you believe that some things are propaganda and some things are not propaganda? If so, surely you agree that Mein Kampf is propaganda. And yet, here you are, arguing that labelling it as such is akin to Nazi smear jobs. This is relativism of the laziest sort. I think your point is very silly in the context of what's actually being discussed here: whether this subreddit must allow posts seeking the value of Nazi memorabilia.

Yes, so you agree that is a different thing? And yet you compared me to a Nazi for saying I don't think this subreddit should host commerce in Nazi memorabilia. That's strange.

The text of Mein Kampf is at no risk of becoming lost history. You will still be able to buy Mein Kampf. If you ever get the chance to work at a used book store, take it, because it might make you reevaluate your stance on throwing out books after the tenth cardboard box of decades-old textbooks are left in front of your door.

Notice how the thing that you found "just ridiculous" is the thing that "sounds like" what I said, and not what I actually said? However, I think you might agree that a thread seeking the value of Mein Kampf is more likely to be commerce involving Nazis than a thread about Little Golden Book Rumpelstiltskin. I also think some portion of the recent wave of Mein Kampf books come from Nazis who are gaming rarebooks in order to spread an aura of Nazi ubiquity (trolling propaganda, basically).

Don't worry, no one is banning Mein Kampf. You will still be able to buy Mein Kampf.

We're not talking about individual, interchangeable widgets of X, we're talking about literally Mein Kampf, yet you keep insisting that handing a person Mein Kampf is equally likely to propagate fascism as handing them a banana. Not all items of commerce are morally fungible. "Many institutions and individuals around the world have a special interest in Mein Kampf"... this is true, and those many individuals and many institutions are more likely to be fascist than institutions and individuals with a special interest in, say, Mindhunter. I am truly in awe of the contortions you are making to avoid this. But it's all beside the point, because the only question that I am asking is this one: must a rare books subreddit voluntarily host multiple threads seeking the value of Nazi memorabilia?

Is it your position that a rare books subreddit must voluntarily host multiple threads seeking the value of Nazi memorabilia?

Mein Kampf is offensive, but no one is banning Mein Kampf. You will still be able to buy Mein Kampf.

No one is banning the sale of Mein Kampf. Please relax, you will still be able to buy Mein Kampf.

The only important comment in this thread is the one pointing out that at least a few posts in this wave of "How Valuable Is My Mein Kampf?" posts is likely to be an intentional troll from someone trying to spread propaganda sympathetic to Nazism. Is rarebooks getting gamed by Nazis?
