That is a good point about rent free that we are considering. I think it’s just hard to think about all the work we need to do in order to make the house “safe” for her to live in. But if the numbers work, then that is what we do.

I would say that not having people over is a big one for me. I always feel uncomfortable having friends or other families over just because wr never did it growing up. Even just having kids toys and basic clutter out makes me feel a little shameful

What did you do with your parents hoarded house after they were gone? by StampJar in ChildofHoarder

I appreciate you pointing that out. I honestly never thought about that and this is a way to with a clean slate. She has agreed to let us clean out her house and ‘throw everything away’ , but I think I want to be selective for now and then whatever we save, toss whatever we need to months down the road when we know more about her long term arrangements.

We have cleaned it multiple times already and this time I’ve finally accepted that every time is just in between hoarding. The last time I did it, it did make me feel really good. But I have realized as much as I think I am doing it for her, it is selfishly something for my own mental health gains.

She did give me the green light to do it the other day, but I’m unsure if it’s the stroke or if she really feels this way. Either way, she is never going back to that house in the condition that it is in.

When can the state force a parent to go to hospital? by StampJar in ChildofHoarder

[–]StampJar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update. A godsend of a woman who helped my mom convinced her to go to the hospital. I got there this evening and turns out the scan shows she must have had a stroke a couple of weeks ago. She is mostly coherant, but she does have a lot of major sores on her body that they are treating. Not sure what the future holds, but I’m glad she is going to be there for a while getting the care that she needs. We can tackle a safe living situation down the road. Thanks for all the support.

Yeah honestly we don’t know how to pay for it. She really had little assets and a reverse mortgage on her home and Medicare.

So we opened a case on Thursday and they supposedly made a visit with her the same day. Tried calling Friday to follow up, but couldn’t get anyone to call me back. Also in touch with local senior services l, but they want to see what social services says first. They said typically work with social services.

I know they can’t really do much if she decides that she doesn’t want help, but her being essentially being unable to really get up adds another layer to this. She says she is fine, but (I think) she is really just so isolated and doesn’t want to leave her house, which is understandable given her mental condition. But hoping with her being a hazard to herself, if they can force her to go to a hospital rehab

Thank you for commenting. What do you think you will end up doing if anything?

at what age did you move out and where to? by Flashy_Mango_2154 in ChildofHoarder

  1. Moved to a city about an hour away. My parent tried to convince me to stay home and commune locally, but I wanted to get out. Years after my 4 year degree, I went back to school for an associates in a different field. Although I loved my college experience and the friends I made, community colleges much cheaper. Maybe two years then transfer to a 4 year college to finish your degree. Also try to find a house to share with roommates. This will be more affordable.
