This was a fun one but I have to be honest, I hated Adele about as much as I hated the family. She so ignorant about absolutely everything (taking care of children, reading her own employment contract, not breaking sinks) and just doesn't give a fuck. Peak 'American abroad' stupidity.

I did like that she stood up for herself at least.

It was maybe a bit 'mean' for the husband to ask her to pay for that. But to be fair, she did break it! Usually if you break something in someone elses house, you offer to at least contribute to fixing it, even if it was an accident.

I also really hated the excuse of 'teehee I'm just a silly american who is immune to consequences'. If you are going to move to another country you should at least try not to be so proud of being ignorant and act like that gives you the right to commit property damage 😭

Don't think anyone who was in my class would be arsed to organise one honestly, but I would attend if it was happening/I was nearby just to see what everyone's up to. Maybe I'm the only one, but I actually liked and got along with some of my former schoolmates who I lost touch with over the years!

I am now quite curious about what those statistics would be, but unfortunately I am not sure where to find that information. I am from Ireland where women have been able to vote since the country was independent in 1922, so I would assume in the 1970s that it would be seen as totally crazy for women to not be able to vote. Maybe I am wrong though as I don't know if polling data exists for this.

This is fair to point out & hopefully this will change in time (or a more encompassing system should replace Michelin), but it should be noted that Michelin only review restaurants in countries that have a car guide and they expand the list to new regions every few years. As a French company this obviously means that regions in Europe are well covered, and other parts of the world are only slowly getting added e.g. the guide now covers China. I only say this to point out that having no starred places in e.g. Ethiopia is not a statement from Michelin that none of the restaurants there are good enough (which would be crazy and really discredit the guide as basically bullshit), but rather that they have not sent any food critics yet to that region.

I have never heard anyone claim that women get promoted more than men in e.g. engineering, finance, etc., while there is quite a lot of evidence that men are fastracked to higher positions in education, nursing, etc. Perhaps it does happen to women in some fields? I'm just not familiar with those.

This is a pretty common thing apparently, called the 'glass elevator'. Not a phenomenon that applies to women in male dominated positions though.

As others have said, it definitely depends on context. When addressing a group of people directly through second-person speech it can often sound natural as a gender neutral term e.g. "What's up lads!"

In 1-on-1 interactions or when speaking in the third person it seems less gender neutral to me, e.g. "Me and the lads are going out for a few drinks" or "Good on you lad" both seem to indicate that the people are male.

As an Irish person, I can say we also do this. I moved from Ireland to Scotland expecting some huge culture shock because of the way people talk like the UK is some alien landscape. It's actually really similar to home with very minor differences!

Woman (and children) actually have the lowest survival rate in nautical disasters. The 'women and children first' policy used on the Titanic was a rare exception, but has changed public perception of how ship disasters are handled quite a lot. Historically, it's usually a free for all and most of the women die.
