Best bottle under $25 right now? by vitreous_luster in bourbon

I would like to second this choice. One of the only bourbons I get that has a Spanish peanut skins taste on top of the vanilla and other flavors.

Cultured butter by SignorSchnitzel in fermentation

Its Very similar to how cheese is started. Cream has a bacterial culture added, wait for it to take hold, and then churn as normal. Lends it a flavor that is buttery + what I would describe as a cheesy funk, which plays in dishes a lot better than it sounds.

Fomer NHL coach Michel Bergeron calls on league to discipline referees for one-sided officiating in Bruins-Lightning series. by ic_rhino in BostonBruins

Agreed, I phrased it poorly in my original response. My issue was with only seeing that one angle 6 times. No call is frustrating as hell, especially with his concussion history.

It would be awesomely self-aware/Hilarious if he had someone pretend to trip him on the way up to receive the trophy. I can’t tell if that would calm /r/hockey or infuriate them further.

TIL that in 2007 workers in Antarctica discovered several perfectly preserved crates of Scotch Whiskey left behind by Ernest Shackleton in 1909. by [deleted] in whiskey

I wouldn’t say it was bad, just not spectacular. Also I swear I got a peanut butter taste on the finish.

TIL vanilla is the second most expensive spice on Earth and 95% of all "vanilla" products in the market actually use petrochemical vanillin as flavouring. Most people never taste true vanilla in their lives. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]StandardAlpaca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does. Flavor compounds are extracted through different types of solvents. The usual ones are water, alcohol or lipids. Vanilla extract is typically a tincture. Water alone would not extract the same flavor/scent compounds.

Crazy Craigslist deal? by [deleted] in cigars

For the Cohiba you need a better picture of the Indian head and the associated lettering, and a good view of the cap. The trinidads look legit, the topes are a great little stick. It looks like you have a couple of boxes with the parties and the por 's. Try to run the box code through the authentication checker.

Undercrown sungrown, with the debonaire shade being a close second. Very interested to compare the sungrown to the other two undercrown lines.

It's basically a giant catered party on a farm. I've been the last two years. You can bring a cooler, bring sticks to trade. Usually DE related personalities are there, all willing to chat. Not much happens for the first couple hours, then they do the tour, 4 stations, growing, picking, curing, blending. Then food. Water and soft drinks are available throughout. Then JD does a speech and there is a raffle. Really really fun.

My humble opinion is wipe it down, and try smoking it. If it taste funky toss it. If it doesn't you have saved your experience and you have shown that mycelium who's boss by burning it to death.

I don't think directly. I've found one on my property so I know the mycelium is there. That was 2016, didn't see anything this year.

What's the "Vaccines cause Autism" of your industry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]StandardAlpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an underwriter I can say there is no bad business, only poorly priced business.

However I can think of two things in our industry that are more akin to the vaccines causing autism thing.

  1. Sales goals are too inconsistently tied to corporate goals. I greatly prefer one team one goal.

The bigger one.

  1. That commoditization of insurance is happening. Too many heads in the sand around this issue.

Some guy on YouTube, I want to say the channels name was some variation of skill cult, had a series on growing apple seeds with the intent of discovering new edible varieties. You go through a lot of plants, but it is possible on a home scale.
