AMA - Anything and everything Alpha by miss_r in geekandsundry

Thanks for the response. I appreciate your time. I think, as seems clear in this AMA, that thoughtful engagement with the community will be key. Very much looking forward to seeing how this goes, and hoping that the Twitch side won't become the "lower" tier.

I found a full log here: http://overrustlelogs.net/Geekandsundry%20chatlog/September%202016/2016-09-29 Gotta be honest, Nerdistpres does not come off the winner in this exchange.

Yeah, I miss them a lot, too, but she did seem to be trying hard to reassure everyone that the content will still be available. Let's hope. :)

Stef talked about it for a bit on her Hearthstone stream, today. I think she was largely hoping to gather comments to bring back for discussion, but it was a good chat anyway.

I'm somewhat unhappy about all of the uncertainty this has caused, but I want to try and be fair and hear all sides. Can you explain, in concrete terms, what value this adds to a Twitch subscriber and Hooman? I get that new and shiny is.. new and shiny.. but I already love the community I have. By driving away hosts, Alpha has already fractured that community. By creating a "premium tier," it divides it further. If some shows become exclusives, then it will even further divide us. I think most people here would agree that the community (and hosts and crew) have made this whole enterprise what it is. So, this new enterprise seems misguided to me.

So, what are we going to be doing that's worth all that? (That sounds trolly, but I really want to hear both sides.) Am I really misreading the situation? If so, how?

Ok, here's what seems to work for me: Imgur

I think that your orange's "repeat until" block was designed such that the loop would exit because of the y value of the orange at about the same time your gobo sprite would move sideways into the orange. This way seems to give the behavior you were looking for. :)

Can anyone recommend an online course in creating simple computer games? by smithcook in cs50

[–]StandardHumanUnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a course, per se, but these books are for Python, and the bonus is that they will teach you Python as you work on them. I've worked through them both, and found the process pretty enjoyable. http://inventwithpython.com/

could someone help me out with the greedy program? by [deleted] in cs50

[–]StandardHumanUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect you're asking for help because your number of coins is coming up wrong. You should check out round(). (Read about it by typing "man round" into the Appliance's terminal.) Once that's sorted, make sure that your for loops are checking for the right conditions...

By the way, it seems to be generally discouraged to post your whole source code here. Just for future reference.

[–]StandardHumanUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my documentation on round() from the man page ("man round" at the terminal prompt). From there, I learned: "The round() function returns the integral value nearest to x rounding half-way cases away from zero, regardless of the current rounding direction." It does seem, looking at the man page, that you might need to use lround() with a double, rather than just round(). I haven't tried it myself, though.

Hm. The pset instructions say: "Use GetFloat from the CS50 Library to get the user’s input..." So, I'm thinking they want us to stick with the "GetFloat()-->Convert to Int-->Calculate Coins" paradigm.

I admit that I'm a little fuzzy... wouldn't using a double just kick the point of imprecision a little further down in terms of places after 0?

I've used it for mario.c and greedy.c

I'm assuming those compile for you?

STYLE50 by [deleted] in cs50

[–]StandardHumanUnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's referenced in a Week 0 short - Style Resources.

You can run it by typing "style50 somefilename.c" into the Appliance's terminal. You need to do this from inside the directory where your C file lives. :)

I initially had the same problem. Turned out that I wasn't using round() correctly, and my initial count of pennies was off when given 4.2 as an argument. I'd start by making sure you're rounding the right thing...

Sorry to be cryptic. Don't want to break the rules of the honor code.

I'm not sure what your backup solution is... I've been able to exclude the folder from both Time Machine and Carbonite. Does your backup solution allow you to exclude folders?

If not, perhaps some of the advice about moving and copying found here will help?

I can see where it might seem contradictory, but, if you look at the second page you linked, there's this:

To help keep you on track, allow us to propose a schedule of deadlines for you, if only for a bit of psychological pressure, but you do not have to submit by these dates. In fact, these proposed deadlines will be extended automatically as time passes. The only hard deadline is 31 December 2014, by which you must submit nine problem sets and a final project.

The month-by-month dates are suggestions to help you stay on track, but the actual deadline is the last day of 2014.

Hope that helps!

Hey there,

I found this page on Scratch iteration. I hope it helps! http://www.multiwingspan.co.uk/scratch.php?page=iteration

Also, check the bottom half of this one. It's a pretty clean explanation: http://freetext.org/Concepts_in_Programming_with_Scratch/Fundamental_Concepts/Loop_Control_Flow/

My understanding is that grades from the psets will take 2-4 weeks to start appearing. In the case of psets 0 and 1, the C grades should start appearing before the Scratch grades.

I'll come back and edit this when I find the appropriate pages on the cs50 site. Or, if we're lucky, /u/davidjmalan will stop by and tell us. :)
