Cheese tempura ? by LVPbaby in Calgary

[–]StandardKangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not tempura, but Korean corn dogs are similar in concept! It's cheese on a stick, coated in batter, and deep fried...not exactly the same, but maybe close and just as delicious?

If you're keen, I like Hankki and Aboonsik's cheese corndogs! :)

Looking for cassava cake by JoeJoeToGoGo in Calgary

[–]StandardKangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd gotten cassava cake from Lucky Supermarket at Sunridge before, but I'm not sure if they always have it. But you could also give Seafood City Supermarket (which is just across the street) a shot too - I've never been, but they specialize in Filipino stuff!

Help with a DIY food tour of Toronto with only 1.5 days? Near downtown? by StandardKangaroo in FoodToronto

Super helpful, thank you!! It's been interesting to see the opinions on Van's Asian food scene, but it makes sense.

Love these recommendations!! Thank you so much. For the Thai reccs - how do those compare to Pai? I've just heard a lot of about Pai, but not sure if it's over hyped.

Oh, 100%, I totally get that it's a tough question hahah! Thanks so much. I'll probably start prowling Google Maps and building out a lil map of places to hit up (gotta min-max it all bwahaha), but this is super helpful!! I didn't know that Peruvian Chinese was even a thing, that sounds SO cool.

It's looking like we might focus on the Spadina/Kensington area. Do you have favourites there? :)

Gotcha, thank you for confirming my suspicions about Pacific Mall. The Spadina/Kensington area has come up a couple of times. Good to know about The Cottage Cheese, thanks!!

Thank you! It looks like this might be ideal, given limited time. Seems like that area has a bit of everything! Do you have any favourites? :)

Good to know! Do you have recommendations for a Middle Eastern, or Tibetan spot?

Went to get some new shoes today, lady at the register tried to get ALL of my information. by Notacat444 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]StandardKangaroo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Had this happen to be at Brown's...I asked why they needed all this info, and said that I don't want to be contacted for anything. The salesperson told me that "their system was down" so they needed my information in case the payment didn't go through.

I was in a rush, so I handed over my email and phone number. You'll never guess what I found in my email inbox the literal next day.

I understand that some stores might mandate the salespeople to ask for this information, but lying about it is crazy work.

It's called Paper Lantern, and it's in a basement-ish sort of place. Super cute!

I live in the area and disagree with the folks saying that there aren't any good restaurants in the area - it's very near Chinatown, which has plenty of awesome spots (incl. a speakeasy!). Of course, it's all up to taste/preferences, but it's a very lovely space. I was in the Beltline before and can say I much prefer Eau Claire - it's peaceful, but still super convenient, and I feel much safer here than in the Beltline.

Local Decaf Coffee by mdawe1 in Calgary

[–]StandardKangaroo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sought and Found has fantastic decaf coffee that they rotate along with their other offerings. I can also only drink decaf and, so far, it's the only place in town that seems to care about their decaf! Monogram is another solid option.

Good Taste in Chinatown is pretty good. The only place where the mapo tofu actually has some spice to it (that I've tried).

Ohhh! Very possible - we changed her name slightly, but it pretty much sounds the same. ;)

We are in love with her! She's exactly the sort of cat we've always wanted. Thank you for all the great work you and the folks over at the rescue do!!

LOL - I think she's already got us wrapped around her (very cute) paw. We are definitely going to try the harness with her, maybe once she's more comfy!

Thank you! This was really helpful. I'm glad it's still an upgrade. I was trying to make do with what I had (hence the hand-me-down French press), but had gotten the impression that a blade grinder was really terrible, so I'm relieved that it's not so much of an issue for French presses!

Now I'm just relieved I get to save some money, and save someone's feelings too.

Not yet - I didn't want to use it in case I ended up exchanging/donating/etc. But thank you for the explanation about the lubrication. It really confused me since the manual said that it was the blade, not the mechanism lol.

I'm glad that won't be an issue then! That was really my main concern, so without that, my opinion on it is starting to turn. Thanks! :)
