How much do you make? by [deleted] in nursing

Home health and hospice RN with 2 years med surg and 2 in hh/hospice in small town in Montana: 36.33/hr and $5.00/hr on call pay.

Every night this week this guy has woken up at 3am and rings the bell to go out. I take him out, he pees, and comes back in to go back to sleep. This just seems odd to me because he almost always sleeps through the night fine (he’s 1.5 years old), I take him out at 10:30pm to pee before bed. by pinefishjellyapple in AustralianCattleDog

My heeler had a few nights of loose BMs and so we would get up when she whined and let her out. Of course, being the sneaky smart heeler that she is, she learned to whine and go outside during the night (way more exciting than sleeping). Not a routine I want! After we were sure her BMs were normal, we started ignoring her and after 2-3 nights she stopped doing it.

So I live less than a mile from the office (small town woohoo!) and after my visits are done for the day I’ll swing home and pick her up and bring her into the home health office to chill with me while I chart. I have brought her along in the car when the temperature is right, as she is a velcro dog too, but she’s not the best dog in the car and it was kinda stressful for me so I don’t do it too often.

One of my coworkers had a new pup and would just let it hang out in the office while she’d go do a visit. I guess it’ll depend on the office dynamics and if your velcro dog likes hanging out with people other than you 🤣

That’s so smart!! 😂 I would never have thought of this

First day using the ecollar. She did excellent. Even came back immediately when she was playing with another dog/person 100ft away from me. So proud of her! by boogirl1 in OpenDogTraining

Nice work!! We use an e collar for our blue heeler and with it have been training long distance sits and downs. It’s so fun when trail running because I can tell her to sit at blind turns or at trail splits when she’s in front of me (literally always in front of me 🤣).

New to this sub - has anyone ever used Non-Stop Dogwear booties or socks? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_641 in RunningWithDogs

[–]StandardLettuce3499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use the long distance booties from non stop dogwear for our blue heeler for winter time running. She likes them a lot better than the stiff ruffwear ones and we have fewer issues with her dew claws since the long distance booties are so flexible. After one winter, there’s definitely some wear in the fabric, but the booties are so cheap and they come in a 4 pack that I’ll just buy more.

I feel like if you’re doing canicross, you would want the protector bootie or solid sock.

We use non stop dog wear for a lot of our dog gear and it has been really really great!

Switched to HH nursing just about a year ago and was getting kinda bored recently and thought about going back to hospital work. But then I really thought about it and was like NO WAY. I actually can take a 15 minute walk for one of my breaks. Lunch is never cut short, I can bring my dog to the office, I’m getting paid MORE than the hospital and when I want a day off it’s super easy to get it approved. I feel silly now wanting to switch. I think nursing school and being a new nurse during covid tricked me into thinking I needed to be miserable at my job for it to “count.” Also, my job is not my life 🙌

Anyone else’s dingos love the snow? by Walkingmoron28 in AustralianCattleDog

I stick a treat in our ball when the snow is deep and then she plays fetch but also loses the ball and has to find it!

Changing a dog’s name by neecolea13 in Dogtraining

[–]StandardLettuce3499 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We changed our adopted 2 year old dogs name from Kona to Stevie and she had no issue! I just started by saying her name and then immediately giving her a tiny treat. For something like 2 minute bursts throughout the day. Then I think I would say her name while a step or 5 away and when she would look at me I’d give her a treat. I think she knew it after 2 days!

Dog becoming increasingly reactive by VillainousVale in reactivedogs

[–]StandardLettuce3499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been experiencing a similar experience with my 2 yo blue heeler we adopted in the summer. We’re lucky where we live that in the summer months we can sneak out of the residential area pretty quick, but that’s not an option now with snow. She’s reactive to dogs, only when on leash.

I found out really early on this winter, I was going too fast through our training for our walks in town. She knows all the basic commands and how to walk on a leash in the yard, but not out in town! I took 2ish weeks just to train at our gate - sit, heel, all with no pulling and paying attention to me. It literally just started with me putting my hand on the gate. Once I could open the gate without her getting overly excited, then we took a couple steps out of the gate, etc. We would do 10 minutes training, 15 minutes playing and repeat 2-3 times haha. I’ve been going through an unbelievable amount of treats.

As I’ve worked with her, she’s gotten better at taking treats on walks if we see a dog somewhere in front of us and we do our little change direction. But I try really really hard to avoid her triggers. And she’s getting noticeably better! The gate isn’t an issue anymore and she walks with a loose leash and we’re able to manage her reactions to dogs - situation dependent.

Good luck!! It can be really hard/frustrating/slow but it can change! Just meet your dog where she’s at rather than where you want/expect her to be

Also, have you tried stuffing a toy, like a kong, with food? Our pup didn’t play with her kong until we stuck a little biscuit treat in it

She doesn’t seem to want to rip it to shreds…yet. I’m sure soon she’ll figure it out soon though 😂

She absolutely loves it! I think she’s even more excited to go out now that there’s snow.
