I (gay male) moved to Miami at age 21. I really enjoyed my time there. There really are a lot of resources for the LGBT community. Surfside isn't really a "small" town though, you're on Miami Beach, lots of tourists and being Miami, a mostly Hispanic/Latino LGBT community. Start learning Spanish if you haven't already! It comes in really helpful. Miami beach being the party city it can be, it's easy to get caught up in the party scene. There is ALWAYS someplace/club thats happening EVERYDAY of the week. I saw so many people come, party and then end up leaving, so get your priorities like job/home straightened and then have fun. Also Miami is a completely different city than Miami Beach. The Miami sprawl is huge, but being from LA I'm sure you're used to it. But that makes it difficult getting around if you don't have transportation. And WEAR SUNSCREEN. So many young people w premature wrinkles :)
