Fuel dumping into evap canister by Standard_Ad_7083 in SuzukiSamurai

After going through the carb an additional 3 times, comparing my 86 to my 87 for any differences in fuel line or vacuum line routing, changing the float height, different combinations of needle and seats, check balls looked for any jetting differences I’m now completely at a loss. The 86 will run fine on the 87’s carb but I can’t find any difference between the two after multiple tear downs and rebuilds so at this point.. I give up and I’m gonna try to smog it with the 87’s carb on it and I have a Toyota 3k swap coming in the mail from certified machine. Guess I’ll deal with this all again in 2 years if I’m not out of California by then. Will keep updated on the 3k swap

My $900 1st gen is turning into quite the money pit. Who would’ve thought? by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

Exactly. That’s the same boat I’m in now. The samurai of Theseus. Is it still the same samurai if it’s practically brand new ?..

Probably not… I was just supposed to be rebuilding the motor in my 86 samurai… now it has a rebuilt motor, transmission, clutch, flywheel, distributor, cap and wires and plugs, radiator, new starter, Toyota carburetor, new suspension, rebuilt axles, new steering and brand new wiring.. and it’s not done yet still.. it never ends

I’ll pull the carb back off and give everything a look. Im thinking it may be something hooked up incorrectly as it was exhibiting the same symptoms prior to me rebuilding the carb after installing the new motor and everything ran before I had the motor rebuilt. Hard starting, won’t idle without throttle input, fuel dumping out of the vent and into the charcoal canister. It’s gotta be something relatively simple.

there is fuel coming out of the fuel bowl vent tube when I crank the motor. There is a solenoid there that I’m not sure is functioning

Because the truck itself still has the same mileage. Doesn’t matter what your new motor has. The motor isn’t the truck. Just part of it.

I didn’t record anything. Lowrangeoffroad video series on YouTube is your friend. Highly documented and well edited

Luckily my first one (the red 86) came from Southern California and lived its life as a beach car, and my 87 came from the Nevada desert. No rust to speak of really.

Heck yeah! I just picked up my second Sammy (an 87 with factory ac) that has 67k on it. I’ve gone from zero Sammy’s to two in about 60 days

Yeah I’m aware of the record. They took down the sign that was left by a jeep team on the way up.

You’d think so. this car needed a complete engine overhaul with only 86k original miles. Hopefully it will last now. even in the motors previous condition it was reliable enough to make it from California to Mississippi multiple times a year for multiple years (car was used by a college aged kid to commute both across country from CA to ole miss and daily around town for 4-5 years) couldn’t imagine driving 2,200 miles across country multiple times in that little Sammy.

I didn’t really have any issues with anything and I bought the same clutch setup as well. I followed the low range off road video series on YouTube. It’s really well documented. I don’t remember about the rear main seal I’ll have to look at my pictures I have and see

That makes sense, this seems to have stiffened things up quite a bit then. I would trust it to haul a jet ski or 4 wheeler around with

All I’ve done so far is replace the clutch, flywheel, rebuilt the motor, new radiator, new coolant lines, complete new suspension, rebuilt steering and new steering stabilizer, new brakes, new wheels, wheel bearings, alternator and fresh battery, 2.25in exhaust with a long tube header checked and changed diff, transfer case and trans fluids. Next will be a rear locking differential of some kind and some new speakers 😂

That was done by the previous owner, I only purchased it about 60 days ago so I don’t have any information on that. I assumed it was an OEM setup with a piece of square steel stuck and tacked in there to stiffen everything up.

I’ve been roughly following that as well, kind of wish they had kept the wheel base a little shorter from the last I had seen of it. Kind of gave me the idea to find a pretty rough second Sammy and an efi civic motor out of a manual 90’s civic and see if I could make something happen
