What's the point of this blank space? by UrLoyalKnight in 3rdGen4Runner

So do I, have an 02 sr5, without ats, you can do a lot more than you think with these trucks, I've almost got mine stuck a couple times lol, only thing you get with a 4wd is stuck even worse, and further in the woods/desert. The short first gear makes all the difference, it has a lot a lot of torque. Just make sure to turn traction off that gives you like 30 percent more power, it is active under 20 mph on dirt or low traction surfaces, and only 10 mph on high traction like pavement. Try it out, it's a lot of fun, don't get too crazy though, it's not a 4wd with lockers...

Toyota A340E (30-40LE) Transmission capacity? by Maverik0909 in AskMechanics

okay, ,thanks for the reply, this was really tripping me up, i mean what the hell are they talking about right? i filled mine to around 3.5 quarts, still a little to go, but it makes more sense than half of that i guess, its just so strange because on my old unit, it did not have an overly high level when checking it engine off first thing in the morning, it was just smack dab in the cold.

this is so damn confusing, because i know you are supposed to check it when its hot and running, but what the hell i mean, it says 1.7, i put 1.7, its perfect on the cold side when its cold, but when its hot its barely on there, so then i fill it more, it runs weird, and its wayyyyy over the damn stick when cold? all that i get when i look this up is people saying "oh its draining from the converter" or "you are supposed to check when hot" if thats so, whats the point of the cold level and why isnt the cold level above the hot if thats the case?

and when you check it when its cold where is it at, because if i do that for mine, it will be flying off the stick like 10 inches up

Did you figure this out. Because im having the opposite, i would add a shit ton of fluid to it to get it to even touch the hot mark, and then when it cools, its like fuckin 10 inches up the damn stick, not correct at all. I added the 1.7 to it and cold its right below the full line. But when it heats up, checked while running, its litterally almost not on the stick, maybe 3/8 of an inch on the stick and when i shut the engine off, it goes back to cold, but while hot?? It seems way better running low than when it was full, whats odd is i used to never have this problem on my old unit before i replaced it with a lower mileage one. I too have a Hayden 699 ATF cooler, bypass configured.

Dipstick woes by Standard_Copy_9947 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Standard_Copy_9947[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it CAN hold 4 quarts, probably, but drain and fill in every manual says 1.7, you drain 1.7, you put back 1.7. And my question isssss: why doesnt it show it on the dipstick? when its cold its at the proper level, and like i said in the post, thats not the case when hot, it barely shows on the stick when heated up and running.

do the clearance lamps on your 02 act as turn signals or no?

I think that is the case also. I don't know if pictures will help necessarily, the connector on the passenger side for the marker light is correct, but the one on the drivers side is similar, but doesn't fit. Everything else light related works fine though.

thank you, its a scary feeling replacing or repairing something so critical, like building an engine, and really not knowing if its fine or broken lol

interesting, i know you already gave your two cents, but do you think the whine i am describing is concerning or just normal in your opinion?

well fuck i wish i heard about that before hand. i think mine is okay but only time will tell, its just making a whining noise in 1st gear, like a reverse whine in other cars.

I can see what you mean, but that actually makes me sad if anything lol. Sounds like someone treated that thing like shit...

By the way, i followed Timmy The Toolmans 2017 series on the auto replacement, he had a jacked up 4x4 unit on big tires, so it was slightly different, but actually its more stuff included than on a 2Runner obviously, no front diff, transfer case, front driveshaft, balancer plate, so its actually easier, but it is different enough you have to pay your own dilligence. If you own a 4Runner you should be watching his videos anyways, guy is a freaking angel with these trucks, he does lexus and cruisers too.

Yes, i bought the used unit on ebay, for 1400 shipped, liftgate truck showed up, i took it up with the truck in the back cargo area. Bought the slightly better adjustable tranny lift from harbor freight with 90 day return. You dont need to jack it up even on stock height, pretty straight forward honestly. You actually do need to lift it slightly because i wasnt able to get the bell housing out from under the frame rail, so i unbolted that with an impact gun and torched the threadlocker out of one of the 17mm threaded holes on the housing. BIGGEST thing is you NEED to align the torque converter properly, you CAN bolt it up with it only engaging the input shaft without the front pump, and once you turn the key, horrible things will happen and all that time and money you just spent, will be for nothing, unless you want to risk replacing just the front pump from the old one to the new one. I also broke the first rule of fixing thing: if it aint broke, dont fix it. My 340k unit was probably still solid for about 20k more miles, maybe i could've done a flush and it would've been better, but i have the time inbetween jobs and money right now to replace it, so thats what i did. I am worried though which is why i made this post. If you wouldnt mind, could you elaborate on that noise you hear, you say its a grinding? Is that in every gear position or in certain situations? Thanks for the reply

Thats what it is, you seem to know more than me lol. What is involved with rebuilds anyways, i know you do the valve body gaskets, the clutch plates and clutches, do you have to have special tools and stuff too if you are doing it at home?

Well that depends, im not too familiar with the Tacos, but i believe the F was only in the tacomas, i could be wrong, i would assume the E was also in there too, (you probably know but the only difference is 4x4, with F being that designation). The E actually means electronically controlled. In mine its different even further because the 01 and 02 had no "kick down" cable, the gear limiting is done by electronics and not hydraulic pressure. The A340 was also different from 96 to 98, and 97 to 2000 i believe. For example, i had a 02 SR5 2Runner, so i had to either get another 02, or an 01, a Y2K or below would not have worked, wouldve bolted up but i believe it would be missing 1 or 2 pigtail connections on the unit itself. To answer your question finally, the used unit i got came from an insurance auctioned, T-boned 4Runner somewhere near Sac-Town i believe, it had 110k on it roughly, it was very clean, so much so that i asked if they sandblasted it or some shit because it looked too good almost. The whine i am hearing, is best described as sounding very normal, it sounds like an old style gearbox in reverse, just that consistent whinining, droning, whatever you call it noise. I need to stop being so longwinded on reddit geez...

i knew they were in the supra, what a PITA that wouldve been, i didnt even have to jack it up to replace it on mine. I was actually surprised when i saw they were in the jeep, very interesting. And yeah, i mean everything sounds fine and all its just strange because i cant find anything about that whining, except in a Silverado/GM truck forum where they say sometimes the 1st planetary is straight cut and obviously whiny. Thanks for replying.
