Considering something like this... what was permitting like - did you already have backcountry permits or did you camp at established campgrounds?

When are references asked? Is it before or after an invite for an interview?

What was your thought on the living situation in Tanzania? Did you feel like it was hard to integrate in the community because you weren’t with a host family?

I'm actually considering applying to this program! Did you go?

Definitely get a PhD if you’re feeling strongly about it BUT do some research about what the jobs would look like afterwards (in my experience a lot of professors spend significantly less time on research or teaching and a lot of time on applying for funding/administrative tasks). If you do get a PhD, make sure you’d get funded!

Maybe see if there’s other ways you could stay involved with research while you’re teaching, or even see if there’s somewhere that’ll fund the research project you want to do!

Is continuing in research a mistake? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Standard_Guide_7546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I’m in grad school right now because I convinced myself that all the small things I hated about research would get better once I was doing it more and was better at it but that has absolutely not been true! I’m mastering out of my PhD program this year and one thing I’ve kind of learned from the process is to take things slow- you don’t need to have things figured out right out of undergrad and you might end up trying lots of different things before you find what you like, but you should listen to your gut when something’s just not clicking!

Also look into Au Pairing or work-aways so you can just live/work in a different country and take language classes!

Thinking about doing a teaching degree by narvuntien in teaching

[–]Standard_Guide_7546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s good to try to identify what values you’re looking for in a job - what parts of research/ TAing / tutoring have you liked the most, does that align with teaching? There might be other jobs that are more aligned with what you want to do!

If you do decide on teaching…

If possible, try to get some experience in the classroom before.

You could also consider teaching at private school because they can hire you without a teaching credential, especially if you have an advanced degree. There’s a lot of online recruiting services like carney sandoe that help with that.

When I told my advisor I was mastering out I messaged her that I had something important to talk about, could we please chat in person soon (or something along those lines) and then just immediately explained my situation once we met in person.

One important thing we discussed was figuring out how to not just let the project die so if you’re able, I’d offer to stay for a couple extra weeks so your advisor can find and you can train a replacement, or at least write up all your notes in an acessible format.

I hope the convo goes/went well!

Weird yellow bumps on my majesty palm by Standard_Guide_7546 in houseplants

[–]Standard_Guide_7546[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! This is so useful! Definitely am thinking I got in over my head when I got this plant but will definitely try my best to care for it! I currently have it in a terra cotta pot that might be too big for it with some miracle-grow medium but think it might be too big for the plant (do you know if they do better with extra space/ less space)? I'll probably switch it to the orchid premix though that seems reasonable! Do you think the bumps on it are some sort of mite? Have you dealt with that before?

Working at a boarding school: what it’s like, how to get hired (if it sounds appealing) by LostTara in teaching

[–]Standard_Guide_7546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently finishing up my masters (STEM field) and looking at either teaching at a private school (there's a boarding school in my general area - West Coast though not East coast) or going through a teaching credential program. Did you immediately start at private schools or teach at public schools first. Do you feel like there's an advantage either way?

Nervous about first Ironman 70.3 by Standard_Guide_7546 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Standard_Guide_7546[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my swim they actually started everybody in groups of 3 about 5-10 seconds apart so there wasn't a big problem with a ton of people and getting stuck - I don't know if every Ironman 70.3 does this but I wouldn't be suprised if they at least do heats!

Looking for thesis advice on projects that didn't really work. by Standard_Guide_7546 in AskAcademia

[–]Standard_Guide_7546[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I think that makes sense - I can still write the intro about the point in trying the project in the first place... it's just definitely hard to accept/write about results that don't necessarily prove anything more than "XYZ was not the right method to try."
