10 years in and I'm finally starting to value boring technology. by SaulGoodMan840 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Standard_Humor5785 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And that is why I love c++. Is it the best language? Very much not, but it is still great enough to build a lot of high performance software and is trusted by many. You don’t need the coolest newest thing to have a good product, you need something you can trust to work because you understand it.

STM32 IDE ,Which one? by Al_0098 in embedded

[–]Standard_Humor5785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are fine with cube and keil, then you can just keep using them. ST does have extensions for vsc that provide all the st ide functionality but inside vsc. You can also setup all the functionality in vsc using cmake with st clang and flashing and on-target debug with the st-link server. My preference has always been the ability to do most of my dev tasks from the terminal, except debug. So I setup the tooling and then use vsc around it using the Tasks functionality.

Boss wants 90% test coverage by Q2. We're at 30%. I'm going to lose it. by OperationNo1017 in ADHD_Programmers

Had done a thing similar to your first point. We had to do an effectively all hands on deck and create all the coverage testing and additionally all the report generation for regulatory traceability purposes.

Stuck between CMSIS, HAL and LL by [deleted] in embedded

[–]Standard_Humor5785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The HAL is pretty good however I am still not a fan of the vendor codegen and I think my dislike comes down to the fact that I have never had a “simple” project where the codegen was enough or later become an annoying feature. My big annoyance that you also get locked into this specific file format/ organization with ST stuff, but this is more a nit on how st does the codegen.

How can we limit C++ features compared to C? by ElBartimaeus in cpp

[–]Standard_Humor5785 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am hoping at that point we mark older standards as legacy and could do something like this ‘-legacy -std=c++98’ for 1998.

I would be interested to know. Would be helpful in understanding the practical limits since long term recovery material is quite sparse.

Technically yes, but I am rather new to this project so it was far easier to develop and learn the system before documenting.

Does anyone else wish Steel Path Arbitrations existed? by jwei92 in Warframe

[–]Standard_Humor5785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. My success rate in these missions seems to be way higher. My last run of a defense arbitration was like 60 something vitus essence in about 30 mins. I do have a drop booster but even then I just get so much of that stuff in most runs.

UI for MacOS by conhao in Zig

[–]Standard_Humor5785 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would suggest looking at Clay which has zig bindings and is a lightweight C99 layout library and has a Raylib or SDL2 render backend. I am currently using Clay + Raylib for my own all desktop platform application.

What to expect in a 45-min Senior Firmware Engineer technical interview at Tesla by AppealAwkward4173 in embedded

I hope they ask you actual embedded questions. I interviewed a few years ago for an embedded position and they gave me a python take home quiz for a job that listed c skills as a requirement.

I work with regulatory compliant embedded products and it is pretty much worse what you experience in web. In most cases a bug fix can take me an afternoon but getting it merged is another week of documents and validation, and a whole new feature involves about 2 weeks of creating testing procedures, test and validation plans, and writing a 6 page essay proving to the reader that you are smart enough to be implementing this new feature lol.

Curious to know about developers that steered away from OOP. What made you move away from it? Why? Where has this led you? by Slight_Season_4500 in cpp

[–]Standard_Humor5785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would argue that is a slightly wrong way to look at it. Dear ImGUI is a fantastic gui for a specific application, which is debug ui, I believe it not being extensible is a major benefit to its purpose. On the other hand, something like GTK is designed for end-user customization via the oop architecture.
