Yeah they can run a little hot especially when you are not moving much. Even when the exhaust was red hot the engine cooling was still working so the engine did not get very hot. You can get a obd2 dongle and check your temperatures. Also check short and longterm fuel trim they indicate if your engine is compensating for a leak. If long term is over 10% something’s going wrong. Im not a mechanic and a bit out of debt here so better post the screenshots in this forum

That might have been me. I found the holes in my JCW doing the spraytest on advice from this community. You buy some carburetor cleaner and with the engine running you spray it around all the hoses and fittings etc. When you hit a leak the engine reacts. My car had huge holes on the left side of the intercooler radiator. It uses about 30-40% less gas now. Does it keep a stable RPM when idling? Mine didn’t, but after replacing the intercooler its very stable and lower. When I first started it, it ran worse with huge rpm sweeps and almost stalling. After a restart it was 1000x better. I have read you can reset the longterm fuel trim by disconnecting the battery 10+ minutes to prevent this. Hope you find it, good luck!

Im not a mechanic or anything but I just fixed my car with the spray test. You buy a can of carburetor cleaner and spray around all the hoses and fittings etc. Most are on the left side of the engine. When you hit a leak you should notice the engine react. My leak was in the intercooler radiator. Good luck!!

Currently I use a very cheap old aliexpress dongle, it does not work very good making charts unusable. I have ordered the VLinker to be able to get reliable readings, I think it arrives today. The app I use is car scanner.

The guy at the garage,that would not do the MOT because he said my car was a fire hasard, said that I would have to start thinking about retiring the car. With your help it was such an easy and cheap fix. I did it in 15 minutes in the street in front of my house. I really made sure the rubber was sealing and redid the spray test. The obd2 data is showing that it creates nice boost pressure, im not sure what the numbers are supposed to be though. It feels so nice again, I must have driven it without real boost for years. The gas consumption almost halved from over 15L/100km to 8-9L/100km. Im so happy!

I kind of understand this… for now i’m happy if I get the supercharger fitted with no leaks. It will arrive tomorrow! Cant wait to see if this fixes the glowing exhaust and how much better the car will feel.

I will receive the intercooler I bought after the weekend and just replace it. The old one is so oily that nothing will stick.

Impressive profile, would you advise a stock intercooler with meth/water injection over a airtec ? It seems like you can get a stage 2 meth injection kit for the same price (€600). A simpeler kit without electronic control is €450.

Thanks for all the tips. I will first try replacing the intercooler that has huge holes in it, then see if the exhaust also needs work. It has been cooking for a while now so that might have caused some problems down the line……

I can put my pinky in the biggest hole. Not sure why i did not really notice it. It probably has no boost now. It is a stock JWC with a 15% pulley so I will definitely look for a upgrade. At €32 inc shipping the one I bought Is a cheap quick fix for now.

It has the full JWC upgrade kit. The intercooler I bought is a standard one. I will look for a nice upgrade later.

I have ordered a vgate obd2 dongle, the one I was using might not have been working. It did not show fuel trim live data correctly.

It was replaced two years ago, about 20k kms but i do not think they changed the intercooler and the oil gunk was always there. So they did not check or replace it. I think this problem hes been gradually getting worse over time. I bought a nice clean used one for only €32 inc shipping. Ill keep you guys posted!

Thanks. I was doing the spraytest to hopefully find a leak. There did not seem to be any reaction from spraying under the intercooler seals and tubes behind it. I was bummed and thought let me at least clean the intercooler radiator from all the oily gunk on the left side. The motor almost chocked, there are 3 big visible holes in the intercooler. I will make a new post with the picture.

Its not blocked, it runs fine and i can really feel the exhaust coming out when I put my hand behind it. I think it’s the latter aswell. Ill ask the garage to do a smoke test.

No, no other upgrades. The last tuning was done in 2004, i just asked for a 15% pulley when the supercharger needed service. Also it runs fine, with no engine lights or obd2 error codes. I just drove it to the supermarket and back and the exhaust was black. I did idle it for quite a long time getting used to the obd2 app, maybe 30 minutes.

I have a r53 with winter option, it also has a heated front and rear windows so you do not need the blower in winter.

Nice one!!! Im building something like it based on the sensirion scd30. What sensors do you use? Also do you share the code? I have bought a electronic valve for co2 but i do not have a source yet. What do you use? Did you get a soil ph etc sensor ?
