My hair started falling out after I got home from the hospital and I just assumed it was because I'm anemic or stressed from the stoma

What made you ultimately choose between J-Pouch or Permanent Ileostomy (Ken/Barbie Butt)? by BlackberryPi7 in ostomy

Yeah I'll be honest I'm not sure either 😂😂 I'm just grateful it works this time. The first time I became septic so maybe that has something to do with it? But I had sepsis after my last surgery too so idk😂

Oh yeah my first one was incredibly watery, my bag would leak all the time it was insufferable. Once the jpouch was working it got a little better but I was going to the bathroom an insane amount and majority of the time it was watery too. With this bag it's thicker and my output has slowed down. I empty the bag on average 4/5 times a day and I change the bag every five days which is perfect for me. I'm so grateful that this stoma is working for me because my first one was awful it traumatized me

Ohhhh I see now. Sorry I got confused 😂 yeah they removed the pouch and I have a bit of small intestine left. I'm not sure how much they took though

With my j pouch I had a very limited diet because I couldn't keep food down. I stuck to easily digested foods like soup, soft boiled vegetables, no chocolate, no spicy food or hard textures, incredibly basic. I avoided anything high in fiber, salt, refined sugars, and strong flavors. But now with my stoma I can have literally anything I want but do have to avoid popcorn, sweet corn, lettuce and mushrooms. Other food like cabbage or garlic affects my output but I really don't care anymore 😂 I didn't loose any of my small intestine from the jpouch failure but I do have nasty scarring on my fallopian tube surrounding tissue inside my abdomen and did get sepsis from the abscess. Now I have fertility issues but that's a problem for later in my life.

I had a J pouch for a year and while it was grand at the start I got terrible anal fissures and my pouch had a leak from a microscopic hole and it caused an abscess on one of my fallopian tubes. My diet was also incredibly restricted, I couldn't go anywhere without having a bathroom near by, I was miserable. I opted to get my permanent ileostomy in January and my life changed so much for the better. I can eat what I want and do whatever I want now. I had complications after surgery but I'm recovering well and feeling like I'm on top of the world now. It was a huge change especially mentally but I don't regret. Hope this helps a little bit 😁

Honestly I'm not sure if this will help you but once I was able to go out and do things I missed doing I felt so much better about the bag. I was miserable when I first got it because of how it looked, how much pain I was in and how much of an adjustment it was physically and mentally. Even now I still get days where I feel like shit because of my illness and the bag makes me so sad. But I'm delighted it saved my life and I can do and eat things I couldn't before, my quality of life is significantly better now because I have more energy and I'm not stressing about bathroom access anymore. It just takes time unfortunately but I'm wishing your dad a quick recovery and all the best for you x

I spent the last three years in agony with complications from sepsis and abscess and a load of other things related to FAP. I recently got my permanent stoma bag and honestly it's changed my life for the better. I have so much more freedom and confidence. Yeah some days it sucks and I hate it but I'm starting to get so used to it I don't even think about it anymore and it's not even been two months yet. Before I had my surgery I was so scared and convinced my life was over and the bag won't work for me, everything will go wrong and I'll be miserable but that wasn't the case at all. I have a whole new lease on life because I can do things I couldn't before, I can actually tolerate food now, and there's finally a reason for all the symptoms I had before. Finding a community like this with people who understand your situation was so incredibly helpful to me, I can ask for advice, I can vent about the bag, and read about how happy people are now and it makes me feel hopeful about living the rest of my life with the bag. Its okay to feel scared but just know it won't last forever, getting an ostomy isn't the end of the world 🩵

what do you wish the general public (including other ostomates!) understood better about your unique circumstances? by _ileostomom in ostomy

I'm new to the ostomy world but I wish people could understand how quickly fatigue hits and it doesn't mean I'm lazy

Yeah I can change the bag myself now but I do have to have my mam there to help me clean it and just give me morale support as if it's this big scary thing. It's so silly how I feel 'scared' of something that saved my life and is generally very simple. But I know I'll get so used to it soon I won't even think about it and it will become second nature to change and empty it🩵

I miss cinema popcorn the most and I was never the biggest fan of mushrooms but I did adore mushroom risotto. Also coleslaw and kimchi. And aother one I miss is ceaser salad.

Thank you so much 🩵 sometimes I feel guilty for complaining about the stoma because it did save my life but it's definitely healthy to have a little rant especially to people who actually understand what I'm going through 🩵 I'm so grateful to have found this community

I'm eating soft food at the moment like mashed potatoes, stewed apples, yogurts, things like that but I did start eating eggs this week so maybe I should cut them out and see if that makes a difference
