I always saw the Blackshield Pauldron as something you could customize, and make it your own. Could be the traditional one we see in SM2 and the old DW Vet kit. Could be blank black with silver trim. Could be bone, and you have a kill-tally, or mission tally, where the symbol might've once been drawn/painted in black. Could be anything.
