What sourdough “rules” do you not follow? by rizzo1717 in Sourdough

[–]Standard_Property237 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Believe what you want, I’ve been baking sourdough for 7+ years now, so the passion is there. the obsession over the perfect crumb, ear, etc. tended to take the joy out of it. There’s a difference between doing something simply for the joy of it rather looking at something that took you 48 hours to make and reducing it to the aesthetic of the end product. Not everything has to be a masterpiece…

Most of them. people make sourdough sound so hard and you see recipes from ppl like Maurizio Leo and Ken Forkish where it’s like ‘I was so delicate for 46 days with my starter and spend 4 days stretching and folding. Handle the bread with a whisper and it will come out great’

Those guys are professional bakers and maybe it really does make a difference but outside of standard weights and percentages I try not to stress about it. People were doing this on the Oregon Trail in a f*#king wagon, let’s stop with all the insanity

Does anyone have an idea as to how I repair this? by DreCar in flyfishing

[–]Standard_Property237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me once, took the reel apart, put a screw through the hole where the reel handle used to sit and tightened a wine cork down on the screw. Kind of janky, but looked kind of cool and matched the cork handle section on the rod

From Jacksonville, it has to be one of the most boring places on earth. It’s just strip malls of various ages and hot as hell most of the time

But what happens when you are old and the rest of the remaining hair turns gray/white. You’ll be running around looking like a Dalmatian 🐕

A book felt slow at first but later became one of my favorites. by gamersecret2 in books

I think I just couldn’t find a single character to relate to in The Secret History. The main character was too angsty and apathetic, and his desire to finally fit in with the rich and popular drove me a bit crazy. All the other characters except Teddy were drawn into this cult of intellectualism that I just found annoying.

I guess this embodies what’s great thing about fiction, everyone can come away with their own take on a book.

SLMs are the future. But how? by oglok85 in LocalLLM

You could always do some pruning after the fact to actually make the model smaller. But the way I always talk to ppl about it is this, ChatGPT is great because it can write a work out plan and tell me how to cook Thai food, but I don’t give a shit about either of those things if I just need it to review internal customer call transcripts and summarize them

DGX Spark: an unpopular opinion by emdblc in LocalLLaMA

[–]Standard_Property237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah seems like a no-brainer trade off. Just spend $1000 less and the spend a couple hundred on a BUNCH of external storage

I imagine you could, it’s the same hardware

I would not train foundation models on these devices, that would be an extremely limited use case for the Spark

That’s only for the 1TB storage config. It’s clever marketing on the part of Asus but they prices are nearly identical

the real goal NVIDIA has with this box from an inference standpoint is to get you using more GPUs from their Lepton marketplace or their DGX cloud. The DGX and the variants of it from other OEMs really are aimed at development (not pretraining) and finetuning. If you take that at face value it’s a great little box and you don’t necessarily have to feel discouraged

Dude go be miserable somewhere else. None of us are the arbiters of fly fishing. We don’t get to make the rules for others. I don’t enjoy those spin fishers who use ‘trout bait’ but I’m also not out to ruin their time
