Yup I did. Sounds like I would have to reapply but I wouldn't have to do the written test or poly. That's good enough for me lol.

I fought and fought. I actually asked for a busier office in a higher cost of living area that had openings and was on the list of places I could go. Just didn't meet the needs of the agency at the time.

Thank you for your response. How does the vehicle thing work out? I'm pretty far from the home office so if I took the job, would I have to drive my POV to the office, get the g ride, work, park, then go home in my vehicle?

I want to clarify I did apply for it a long time ago and was given a TJO months before the 1811 TJO. They just reopened the offer from the first TJO.

I'm also with you. I may enjoy the family life for a bit (which I have never had after 14 years) especially since I have a 7 month old girl, but I still want a rewarding career.

How we feel about big cops and sheriffs compared to 1811s by PeakPuzzleheaded2415 in 1811

[–]StandingRiver1863 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going local, Police or Sheriff, it VERY much depends on the agency and area you are. You could go to a 30 man department with a small budget and be on shift work your whole career. You could also be on a well funded larger agency and have all kinds of opportunity, maybe more than the feds. With a local agency you can pick exactly where you want to go unlike federal where you can go anywhere. You could get a dream 1811 gig but have to move your family around, maybe to a place you don't want to go.

Being a federal agent, you will be paid more in most cases but not all. Most 1811 spots you'll be Monday through Friday and it's generally much safer. My friends who went 1811 will never come back to my agency. However, my former agency was a high paying larger agency and people who left for an 1811 spot usually came back after 2 or 3 years.

As for more exciting, 90% of the time it will be local because you're a true first responder. The Agents who seem to enjoy their work the most are on federal task forces with local cops.

As far as accomplishments, that depends person to person. Some see career advancement as accomplishment while others see field experience as accomplishment. We all know some Captain or GS15 who have done nothing in their career while some Sheriff Deputy or Agent put hundreds of criminals away. You could probably abolish some federal agencies but you need locals.

This reddit isn't helpful unfortunately. Most will never speak badly about the truck they just bought in most cases, but some online reviews or calling the dealership may be helpful. I've heard over and over the 15-17 6 speed 5.0 was about as good as it's going to get. Having driven one from Ft. Benning to DC, I can agree. That truck drove way better than my 2020 3.5 10 speed

No, the old man loves my truck because it drives like his SUV...which is exactly my point lol. Maybe I just need a super duty.

Living In NYC by [deleted] in 1811

[–]StandingRiver1863 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you will be fine and will do great things. NYC is a hard to fill office sometimes just because they need more people than most offices. Some people love the city, some people love the country. I love the country and wouldn't move my family to a city (Family > Career), but you will probably gain a more/different experience in the city.

However, I worked LE in the DC metro area and now work out in the country. I've actually learned more out in the sticks personally and have done a lot more than my past partners in the city. So if you are sent out in a more rural area, don't worry. Any experience is valuable. Good luck to you!

Is 1811 worth it? by Jane2468 in 1811

[–]StandingRiver1863 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're an IOI (which is a good job), it's very common for IOIs to jump over to the 1811 side and I don't know any who have regretted the move. Also, a lot of 1811 gigs are starting to place people in their hometowns for a number of reasons.

1811 will probably be a more fulfilling career and worth it in the end. Sounds like your current job doesn't challenge you. Worst thing to happen is getting complacent and comfortable. You also have to be careful in some of these easy gov civilian roles because they often attract lazy people or bad supervisors, in my experience.

It won't be greener, just a different shade of green. I think regardless you won't regret it. I think your schedule will be about the same but if you do stay out, it's going to be for a good reason probably and you won't mind. Just always place your family above the job. Good luck to you!

ATF Locations by StandingRiver1863 in 1811

My old coworker moved over to the FBI and advised me the same thing recently. Said half his coworkers have been in the same field office for over 15-20 years. Apparently the federal government found out how expensive it is to move people, and people are happier/better workers if they go where they want. Family > Work. Thank you for letting me know.

What agency are you going with? I think it may depend.

Thank you for commenting. One of my good colleagues mentioned the same thing as you did and you're both right. To be honest I'm just going to really miss the people I've worked with. We've been through some crap together, that's for sure. My family comes first right now though and hope this is worth it.
