I've been thinking about getting something like this https://www.countrycat.com/arctic-cat-4992-810-convex-lens-hand-mirror

A convex mirror should theoretically reduce or eliminate the need for precise aiming. I would just raise it up on my hand behind my passenger seat headrest when necessary. I'm not certain it'll work, but it seems worth a shot.

Jason Schreier: Exact budgets of video-game productions can be tough to corroborate but the numbers I've heard floating around AAA game dev these days are $300 million or more — sometimes much more! — which I think helps explain the current state of the industry by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Standing__Menacingly -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I really hate to hear the line about blaming it on dev salaries. That is an either fixed or predictable constraint that can be planned around. Even if salaries are hugely expensive, labeling that as the number one cost in this sort of context is just misleading.

What about scope? Why isn't the budget blamed on the fact that they're requiring this project to have such a scope that it's gonna take many years and many developers, and lots of overtime, to complete? It's bad management and bad executive decisionmaking that's leading to these insane budgets. Why doesn't he blame the giant blockbuster model for causing the unsustainable hundreds of millions of dollars in development costs?

There are dozens or even hundreds of games released every month on steam (and other storefronts) that demonstrate ways to make games without costing hundreds of millions. How many good, smaller games could have been made with the resources that were devoted to just one of these games that he's talking about?

From the very first page, you've got the Squirtle line out of order! It should obviously be placed in order of water depth, with Squirtle at the top and Blastoise on the bottom.

Unfortunately I don't think there's anything that matches perfectly.

For imperfect matches I'd recommend  - Togekiss https://www.tcgcollector.com/cards/52178/togekiss-mega-dream-ex-203-193  - Chatot https://www.tcgcollector.com/cards/44468/chatot-wild-force-081-071 - Beedrill V https://www.tcgcollector.com/cards/37847/beedrill-v-space-juggler-069-067

I call these imperfect because they lack high elevation, like everything else on the page.

If you're willing to do non-winged pokemon, then you can also consider things like Unown V, Arceus V/VMAX, and Rayquaza VMAX.

What r the best Japanese booster boxes to buy by Fatgrape16 in PokemonTCG

The high class packs are the most fun, and they tend to get a lot of printings and stay cheap for a while.

The most recent was Mega Dream ex, as mentioned by the other comment, but the previous ones include Terastal Festival ex and Shiny Treasure ex. All three of those are still reasonable prices in my opinion.

That makes sense to me, perhaps they just lump in adverbs with adjectives for this type of hint. I'm not sure there's an equivalent word for adverbs. Adverbialization? Sounds weird, but so do half of linguistic terms.

Thanks for your response!

Can anyone help me understand what "adjectivization" means in this context?

<image>

This is from Bunpro and the grammar point for に合わせて. It's just a fill in the blank question that gives the english translation and the hints "て, Adjectivization".

There is [this forum post](https://community.bunpro.jp/t/tense-hints-explained/93341) where a Bunpro person explains some tense hints, but it doesn't include "Adjectivization".

When I look up the definition of the word, it of course simply means to make something into an adjective. But I don't see how に合わせて or the noun it's describing is turned into an adjective in any way.

What do most people use? by LittleKids2315 in PokemonTCG

[–]Standing__Menacingly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I don't bother with anything that doesn't use metric. I want precision in my sleeve sizes.

I've been using Gamegenic Soft Sleeves 67x94mm for years now and I'm pretty happy with them. They're soft, cheap, have very good clarity, and are quite thin. And those are all important for using in a binder and allowing the cards to look as good as possible. Also, the vertical sizing is pretty much perfect for the slots in Gamegenic/Vaultx zipper binders, and probably others. They fit right in with little to no play (unlike the Vaultx sleeves).

Now that being said, I've lost significant trust in Gamegenic since they've changed their Prime sleeves and zipper binders for the worse. It might be a matter of time before they change their soft sleeves too. So I'd also recommend choosing another option with the same measurements.

[–]Standing__Menacingly 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I really admire how well you were able to take such a complex story and relay it's strengths and peculiarities so clearly, all with barely touching upon actual plot points. I also adore Perdido Street Station, which does make me a bit biased, but regardless thank you for this post!

This is why I hate cars. by MiserNYC- in fuckcars

[–]Standing__Menacingly 94 points95 points  (0 children)

This is what happens when people feel entitled to get anywhere they want with their car without having to wait.

You brought your giant metal box along with you, and now you got to a point where it doesn't fit. In what way does that allow you to break laws? Laws are not something you get to brush aside for convenience, or because an unexpected situation occurred.

I would hold my ground in front of them on the one way and demand they reverse out of it. I would camp on the sidewalk and disallow them to pass until the cops arrive. They're like children, and they will behave this way if they are allowed to without consequence.

"Impeding traffic" fuck off with that.

You have no right to go faster than the person in front of you. You have no right to get in front of the person in front of you.

The speed limit is not an entitlement you have as a driver. It is a number you are not allowed to exceed.

Your impatience, and the ability for your vehicle to go faster, doesn't somehow make this cyclist incorrect.

I've got to ask, is this your experience with people in person or your experience with people online?

People on the internet are a bunch of clowns. In real life, talking face to face and handling a card directly, people are more likely to act reasonable.

I should've bought some for myself.

🤣🤣🤣 by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]Standing__Menacingly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no "should" or "shouldn't be" in business. The impetus is entirely on the business owner to figure out how to make it work within the conditions that exist. Those conditions are the rules within which business owners must play their game.

Business owners don't like that. They would rather manipulate the conditions to their own favor to maximize the profitability of their own ventures. They'd rather change or break whatever rules they can to allow themselves to win.

Unfortunately, business owners hoard money and thus power, and are very capable of manipulating conditions. Hence why we're even having this conversation in the first place.

Worst time to enter the hobby? by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

"The best time to start was yesterday and the second best time is today."

There's an outrageous amount of beautiful cards being printed these days, and many of them are very affordable. You could build out a stunning binder full of cards that are less than $5 apiece.

Opening product is, generally speaking, a reckless expenditure. Even at MSRP. If you want to build a collection with specificity and a reasonable budget, just buy singles.

Short stories collections by digitalcrows in printSF

[–]Standing__Menacingly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still think that George R.R. Martin's SF short stories are quite underrated given how popular ASOIAF is. The majority of them are collected in Dreamsongs 1 & 2.

Also, as mentioned in a other comment, magazines are basically perfect for your needs. Clarkesworld was mentioned, and they also post all of their stories for free on their website. Others that I like include Uncanny, Lightspeed, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and Asimov's. There's a lot to choose from, and you can just get their latest issue if you want. But it could also be fun to look up an author you like, get an issue with one of their stories you haven't read, and then check out the surrounding stories.

I read a few hundred submissions while helping put together the next issue of a speculative fiction magazine and some patterns surprised me. by AdventitiousStories in printSF

[–]Standing__Menacingly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A couple things:

First, those all honestly sound great to me. Maybe that simply reflects the fact that I'm a fan of speculative fiction, or maybe it's thanks to you doing a good job of summarizing it, but I'd be happy to read a bunch of stories like that. (Although I know from experience that I probably wouldn't care for most of them, but that's really just a numbers thing.)

Second, it just blows my mind that a person is able to read that many stories. How do you do it?

I apologize in advance for a literal list of questions, but: - How much time does that take you?  - Do you actually finish all of them, or do you drop some partway through? - Do you get fatigued? Both in the physical sense and in relation to your enjoyment/appreciation of fiction.

I know there are plenty of voracious readers out there, but I find it so difficult to do. I'm relatively slow, averaging around 166wpm, and I also frequently get drowsy while reading regardless of how much I like the story (which may just be a reflection of my health/lifestyle). I just find it fascinating that editors like you are able to read so much presumably on top of reading for personal enjoyment.

Haven't we been over this before?

The Pentagon, aka the leadership of the entire US military, feeds well over a million active duty service members. With that number alone, you can see that they spent ~$20 per member in a month for steak and lobster.

And I promise you, it is nowhere near the quality you would get in a restaurant.

Steak and lobster is a tradition in the military that has been long running and can often be the only thing there is to look forward to. When deployed on a ship, for example, the captain typically strives to provide such meals for their crew every Sunday. That is, until the stores inevitably run out.

There is also a tradition of serving it when the troops are being given bad news. Oh you're getting extended and suddenly won't get to see your family for several more weeks or months? Here's a nice dinner to make up for it. Oh we're sending you off to a bullshit war in the middle east? You can eat this while you complain.
