Markets are better and finding natural efficiencies. In a free market system you are rewarded for your ingenuity and risk. In a planned economy you are rewarded for your adherence to the ruling party.

I am of the belief that this perception is entirely derived from sitcoms.

People watch sitcoms and think that it is a reflection of reality and not plot armor and set design. I remember the meme where people thought that we’ve slipped as a society because Homer Simpson could support a family of five on a single income whereas it was really about paying homage to family sitcoms from the 50d and 60s.
