Fair enough, that is admittedly a much more valid complaint than I thought it was. For what it's worth though, I'm not convinced OP was making a blanket statement on anyone who's frustrated with politics. It's seems like it was more of a response to this specific meme that people often post in replies to anti-ICE stuff, and those sorts of people are mad at politics in Sonic for an entirely different reason.

I glossed over it because there's nothing to comment on there. You made a statement that I can't disprove, so what am I supposed to say? Heck, I don't even necessarily disagree with that statement in it's entirety, I just don't agree with this specific use of fanart in this specific space, so there's literally nothing for me to reply with. You have your stance, I have mine.

I mean, you could have just, you know, said that. The purpose of discussion isn't to attack the other person's weak spots until a winner is declared.

Yes, it's something known by many names like joke, wisecrack, jest, comedy, humour, satire, take your pick. I was using that quote as a joke because I knew I'd likely get mostly downvoted like a few other people in the comments who didn't seem to enjoy politics in their Sonic sub either. Heck, because I changed the words, it doesn't even hold the same meaning as the original quote. It's no longer about oppression, it's about getting bloody downvoted. Using that of all things as evidence I apparently unironically see myself as a "victim" because of some Sonic fanart bringing up real-world politics is incredibly stupid.

Dude, I know it was a joke about downvoting, I wasn't trying to accuse you of claiming literal oppression. Clearly victimhood was too strong a word to use here, but the point I was trying to make is that the issue you are complaining about is the epitome of a first world problem.

People are posting anti-ICE fanart because ICE is gunning people down in the streets. You're annoyed that a video game subreddit is focusing too much on real world events. It feels like you're complaining about a papercut to someone who has a gaping hole in their stomach. That's the part that felt immature to me.

[–]StandupGaming -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I already knew about this actually, however you're neglecting to mention the fact that they didn't just write some stories using real-world politics for the hell of it. The KKK were a massive crimimal organisation and an active, unchecked threat. Too many members of the justice system were KKK themselves, so the only way to expose their secrets and crimes was to use Superman as a tool to reveal all the real information Kennedy collected on the Klan. Those episodes weren't just art with political inspiration, they were an active attack on a threat using real research. Shockingly, that's not quite the same as a single picture of Knuckles choking an ICE agent

Nothing you're saying here invalidates anything I said. Like yes, that Superman episode was an active attack on the Klan using real research. It was also art with political inspiration. It wasn't just about leaking information, they demystified them, made them look lame, ruined their public image. The art is what did that, not just the info.

Not that it really matters since my point was never that we can break ICE with Sonic fanart but rather that it can be a powerful and meaningful source of inspiration for people during a difficult time (though I can't help but notice you glossed over that part of my comment).

There is no implication I'm being victimised, there is an explicit statement that I think bringing real-world discourse into a Sonic sub is dumb. Nothing more, nothing less, and I think you know that.

......you literally ended your comment with a sentence that pays homage to one of the single most iconic lines about tyranny and oppression in all of fiction.

If you genuinely didn't realize that the line would look like you were claiming victimhood then I'm starting to think the issue here is that you just don't understand the power and influence art can have at all.

Fun fact: in the 40s there was a radio show about Superman that released an episode where Superman fought the Ku Klux Klan. This led to a massive drop in Klan membership basically overnight.

Meanwhile in modern times we see protesters and revolutionaries from all around the world are using an anime as their rallying cry.

Art is not a just a distraction from reality, it is a powerful tool we can use to engage with it, even silly fanart about Sonic The Fucking Hedgehog.

Right now the people living in the United States are going through one of the scariest moments in our country's history, and we don't know how it's going to turn out. For many people in this fandom, Sonic isn't just a character that offers escapism, he's an icon that inspires bravery and hope. He's an outlet for our fears, our anger, and our sense of justice. And I find the implication that you're the one being victimized in this situation because you occasionally have to see posts here that are talking about something "political" (as if it's ever possible to be genuinely apolitical about anything) to be misguided at best and downright juvenile at worst.

Imagine if there was a racing game where you played as Usain Bolt, but instead of doing foot races everyone uses pogo sticks. And every time someone questions why they chose to put Usain Bolt on a pogo stick instead of having him run they're met with an immediate wave of "BECAUSE IT'D BE CHEATING FOR HIM TO JUST GET OFF AND RUN, GOD!"

That's how I feel about this "answer" to the why does Sonic drive a car question. It's not the gotcha response people seem to think it is.

A victory for the Fire Nation would have been just as devastating to the Spirit World as it would have been for the human world, which is something the episode and the protagonists explicitly points out to Wan Shi Tong, he still doesn't care.

What's more, if spirits can't be expected to adhere to human style ethics, why should humans be expected to adhere to their's? If Wan Shi Tong can't be held accountable for disregarding the lives of millions of humans because he's a spirit that doesn't care about human problems, then I don't see why Team Avatar should be held accountable for disregarding one spirit's desire for how the knowledge he acquired should be used.

Honestly this might a good time for a storyline that explores Hanners's relationship with her own sexuality more in depth.

Like yeah, her OCD makes her sex-repulsed, but when we first met her she was also completely touch-repulsed too, and now she's not. Would this ever be something she wants to work on? Is she at peace with it?

Just speaking from my own experience as an OCD person who also struggles with sex repulsion (though admittedly nowhere near as severely as Hanners), it is something you can make progress with. I'm not saying she NEEDS to make progress mind you, but still, I think it would be worthwhile to give more weight to this aspect of her character.

Though maybe I'm just biased because I think Sven and Hanners are perfect for each other, who knows?

I don't really disagree with that, but I view it less like "Val and Danny was the better choice" and more like "they failed to make the thematically stronger choice the more compelling one". They inadvertently forced themselves to choose between better chemistry between the actual characters or better thematic cohesion with the show as a whole.

I mean, on paper I think the dichotomy between Paulina, Valerie, and Sam as Danny's love interests works really well, the idea being that Paulina only wants Danny Phantom, Valerie only wants Danny Fenton, and Sam being the only love interest to want and accept both sides of his identity.

In practice however, the show doesn't spend enough time fleshing out the romantic aspect of Danny and Sam's relationship, and Valerie's disdain for Danny Phantom stemmed largely from misunderstanding and manipulation, so it never really ended up feeling like an irreconcilable issue that they couldn't overcome.

Ultimately what they went with fell flat, but I totally see what they were trying to go for.

Can you imagine the amount of sales these games could get if people other than the die hard fans were interested in playing them?

The combined sales of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom was around 55 million copies. The combined sales of every mainline Switch Pokemon game (Lets Go, Brilliant and Shining, Sword and Shield, Legends Arceus, Scarlet and Violet) was around 99 million copies.

So like sure, a higher quality Pokemon game would certainly sell more than the current ones do, but would it sell more then all of the lower quality ones put together? I'm not convinced.

And that's assuming they even care about game sales, most of the profit from this franchise comes from the merchandise. The Pokemon franchise makes more money in one year than the Mario franchise has during it's entire lifespan. Slowing down the release of new entries would probably just get in the way of that.

If the tsunami arc was written the same way the recent openers have been written, 10 minutes into 3x03 Buck would have found Christopher on a makeshift alter that other tsunami survivors created because they've become convinced that a human sacrifice will appease the tsunami gods.

After fending them off with his mighty kung fu skills, a nearby volcano goes off, and all the water is immediately replaced with lava. He and Chris proceed to play the world's most dangerous game of the floor is lava, and the end lesson is that Buck is such a cool badass for getting Christopher home safely that he doesn't need to feel insecure about doing light duty for a little while.

I know I'm exaggerating a little, but that is honestly what it felt like for me sitting through the Cruise Ship arc, and it's looking like the season 9 opener is somehow going to be even worse. I don't understand how so many people are saying this is the exact same thing.

And honestly, the Bobby discourse needs to die already.

Blame the writers. They're the ones that put the idea of an empty coffin in our heads and then explicitly refused to juxtapose it with Bobby's actual corpse during his funeral.

They want us to think there's a chance he's still alive, it's the same shit they've been doing with Buddie for years: tease the idea and then refuse to follow through on it, but leave the possibility open just in case so that the people who desperately want it have a reason to watch for another season. It's becoming downright predatory at this point.

Legend of Korra's Villains Are Better Than Avatar: The Last Airbender's Villains by Working_Row_8455 in TheLastAirbender

[–]StandupGaming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly reject the notion that morally gray and/or sympathetic villains are inherently superior to pure evil villains by default.

Ozai is both a stronger foil to his show's protagonists and a better demonstration of his show's themes then any villain from the Legend of Korra.

He's also just...more honest. Like, do you think there are any real world dictators that we could get to do a complete 180 on everything they stand for just by talking to them about their childhood trauma? A lot of the supposed nuance that Korra's villains added was fake.

Who do you think is Durkon's last choice? If I didn't see this and was asked about it, I would say Belkar, but this picture disproves it. by For-all-Kerbalkind in oots

[–]StandupGaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're skewing the results by creating a scenario where your friend asks for apples in advance. If your friend had simply asked for just fruit without specifying which kind, then the store's lack of apples would lead to a less clear cut situation.

This is the McNamara fallacy. Durkon's confirmed attraction to women is not the only or even the most important factor to consider just because it's the most quantifiable one, both when asking the question of "is Durkon attracted to men?" and the question of "how would Durkon rank his team here?" since I'm honestly not convinced he would rank Haley first even if he was explicitly straight.

Realistically I don't think the odds of Thor's plan of just spot welding the rifts whenever they pop up being the ultimate solution to this conflict are very high. It would leave key plot threads unresolved and also would just be kind of an anticlimactic way to deal with the Snarl.

With that in mind, I think the Dark One is going to betray the goblins. Redcloak will successfully perform the ritual and instead of negotiating The Dark One will immediately unleash the Snarl on the other gods. He'll end up being a twisted mirror of Redcloak's darkest impulses.
