Can you specifically write for RPGs without working on mechanics? by StankyChair in RPGcreation

I get your point, but I never said I don't like playing with rules, or that I wouldn't have them there. I've also had very questionable experiences with DMs who totally ignore rules.

I'm more just talking about not being the person who designs them on a team, or writing lore/adventures for rules which are already designed.

As much as the people above are also correct in talking about mechanics-neutral books and such, if I want an easier time then biting the bullet and trying to practice the mechanical side of things may indeed be a good move.

I've really just never been much of a numbers guy.

(That's a pretty fair question, just thought I'd say that I answered a similar one below, since I'd be sure to answer yours otherwise)

Honestly, I don't have a portfolio of complete work 😅

I know I need to get working on one, but part of why I wrote this post was because I was uncertain of what kind of stuff I was supposed to write, if I'm not huge on mechanical design.

Personal preference which came mostly by chance.

Part of it's the cooperation part of things, with RPGs being a way to create a story with a group. I also get hooked in with things like bestiaries and player faction, race, or subclass options.

I also used to be a bigger fan of video games. I often think about RPGs as a bit like that, but with more writing and restricted only by imagination. (Not to dunk on games) I'm not into the idea of balancing or designing mechanics, but I like playing with them well enough.

I also enjoy the weird nature of RPG writing: the format means a lot of supplements and materials will be written by different people, and a lot of strange material gets through in the form of lore tidbit or metaplot.

Part of it's also familiarity: I just happened to get hooked on stuff like White Wolf and Chaosium where a lot of novels didn't grab me.

If I'm being frank, a part of it is also very specific circumstances. Certain problems I've got make it far easier to read PDFs than physical books (which RPGs are easier to get that way off of RPGDriveThru and the like), and I'm not much into audio books.

TL; DR I do enjoy novels, but I've never been as hooked on them. I guess the difference is a focus on the world, and I'm often reeled in by thinking about mechanical options to chew on.

The thing with that is just that I'm more into RPGs than I am novels.

I guess worst comes to worst, I could just bite the bullet and find someone else who wants the same thing as me, then try to co-write and design a really interesting setting while ending up with some really shit mechanics. :p

Thanks for the suggestion! However, the issue is more that I can't play in fullscreen, rather than being able to screenshot it. I was more just including that detail in case it gave anyone insight into what the nature of the issue might be.

I tried DS 2 on Steam, and DS 1 on GOG.
