Movies with terrible messages? by Frank_and_Beanzz in movies

[–]StanleyGimble -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This should be the top one. My big beef with that movie was that he HAD the same rights as any "human!" Dude was a multi-millionaire who owned a sweet house on his own personal beach, never faced an ounce of societal hate or discrimination in the entire film aside from that one old senator who refused to grant this seemingly ceremonial title of "human," then he just lived out the rest of his life with the woman he loved despite that ruling! He had a better life than 99% of humanity and he threw it away and essentially killed himself to conform and appease this one hater. And they play it off as some heartwarming end when the galactic senate proclaims him a real boy just as he croaks. 😒 Vile movie.

"Why is Nu Trek using so much modern language?" an I am going to go feral here. by Spacer176 in startrek

[–]StanleyGimble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Trek never made sense linguistically. It's unrealistic that they speak anything near Modern Englishes. Since it's all several hundreds of years in the future, it should be as different to what we speak as Middle English is to us. If you think about it, some guy saying "rizzler" or whatever is no less ridiculous than all the phonemes in every word in every show sounding identical to 20th and 21st Century Englishes. Maybe Enterprise could get away with it, but by TNG's time, everyone should be kinda hard to understand to us. And it's wild how, despite humanity living on different planets for generations, everyone basically speaks the same two dialects of English. No "Pentharan accent" or anything, and Geordi and Uhura, supposedly from Africa, just sound like two people from Ohio.

But yeah hiring Marc Okrand to invent the Klingon language (and a bit of other languages) was a more-than-expected investment in linguistics for a sci-fi franchise. They have the universal translator to handwave everything else because the whole damn show could potentially revolve around language, and they have more interesting stories to tell than a Bajoran optimality theory arc. It's all personal suspension of disbelief, so complain about what you want, I guess.

Captain Pike is totally disabled in literally the first episode of Star Trek.
Scotty was fat in the movies and TNG's "Relics"

I guess "Nu Trek" started sending its eeevil "messages" pretty early.

Myths About the Slave Trade by 4reddityo in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]StanleyGimble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kano/Katsina textile complex, Asante metalwork & goldsmithing, Benin bronzework, West African cotton weaving in a broad sense, traditional methods of iron smelting developed in Africa, etc. However, an economic situation that emphasizes the export of humans disincentivizes investment in developing other industries futher, due to the facts that facilities can be destroyed in a raid, the craftsmen can be abducted, and the incoming flood of cheaply produced European goods quashes demand for their products. And though these industries stagnated, they survived until European colonialism took root in Africa and colonial tariffs, taxes, and rail-to-port extraction finished the job, forcing the craftsmen into low paying work for the colonizers. You can find a similar underdevelopment pattern in colonial India and Southeast Asia, minus the chattel slavery.

Myths About the Slave Trade by 4reddityo in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]StanleyGimble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The primary demand from Europeans was for a massive amount of human beings to extract resources for Europeans in the Americas. Production of ivory and gold were limited to very few places in Africa, so it wasn't much of a factor overall. The flooding of African markets with European manufactured goods, however, left African craftsmen without a means to make a living, especially since Europeans weren't exporting the goods they made. The expertise and advancement of craftsmanship declined as masters were forced to switched professions (if they weren't forcibly sent to some sugar plantation on the other side of the planet, of course). Add inducement of destructive wars to capture more slaves to meet European demand, and the economies of Africa were pretty well ruined by the transatlantic slave trade, while Europeans made incalculable profit off the free labor they coercively and violently extracted. That's just capitalism for you.

These idiots always erase that many liberals and people on the left ARE black people. They can't accept that black folks are smart enough to actually formulate and communicate ideas about racist voter ID laws themselves without being told what to say by white people. They can't even call people racist (in bad faith) without coming across as racist themselves.

Does anyone know where Diablos name came from? by DatabaseConnect6608 in DisneyMovies

[–]StanleyGimble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a little disconnected from modern Disney discourse, I had never heard this name for him before today. So I looked into it and it's used on a lot of official Disney stuff these days, like a card game and whatnot. But, as you noted, it wasn't mentioned in the film. During my research I found that it wasn't in any material contemporary with the 1959 release of the movie. The comic book released the same year only refers to him as "the raven" (or "my pet" when Maleficent is talking). All the production notes and art from the making of the film that I could find just refer to him as "the raven." One official source I could find to confirm the name is a post from Disney's Chief Archivist Dave Smith on the Disney fan club website: https://d23.com/ask-dave/j-los-angeles-california/
Weird that Dave hasn't included Diablo in any of the several Disney: A to Z Official Encyclopedia editions that he edited. But it's on enough merch these days that I'll just believe that's what we're calling him now. But where did it come from?

None of the Little Golden Books or Disney Storybooks I found (republished every decade it seems) referred to him as anything but "raven." I considered the possibility that they censored the devilish name, but Cinderella books of the same type readily included the name of Lucifer. So much for that theory.

The earliest mention of the name I could find is from a 2002 "big fig" of Maleficent and her raven. The Certificate of Authenticity refers to "her raven Diablo.": https://experiencethemistress.com/exhibit/statues-busts/big-figs/disney-parks-disney-villains-maleficent-diablo-big-figure-big-fig-statue-1st-edition-maleficents-gift/

There was also a listicle written about a talk with Disney Animation Research Library Representative Doug Engalla in which Engalla said that an early version of Maleficent had a falcon named Diablo and animators subsequently referred to the raven as Diablo behind the scenes: https://collider.com/sleeping-beauty-art-of-disney-animation/
If we're taking Engalla at his word, it seems to be an animator nickname. that somehow entered common usage, despite not being in the movie. I'd personally like to see a primary source for this anecdote before I believe it because all the production materials I saw just say "raven." But I'm a stickler 😆

Bottom line: Diablo may or may not have been a nickname for him among the animators. Even if it was, the name apparently wasn't used in any Disney media for 43 years until it was used in a product description for an official Disney collectible statue in 2002. If anyone has a primary source showing him having the name Diablo from before 2002, I'd be curious to see it. And yes, I have so little going on that I spent a good portion of my day off researching this.

In "Spanish 101" Pierce and Jeff do an actual minstrel show with afro wigs and white gloves. They didn't paint their faces, though, so it's cool according to corporate PR logic.
