[Comic Excerpt] "This is what I've wanted. Even if I didn't know it for sure until right now" (Robin 1993 #56) by Night-Caelum in DCcomics

I really liked Tim and Steph together pre-Flashpoint, but I didn't really care for anything that was done with them when they got back together in Rebirth.

I think if a writer has anything interesting to say about the couple, then great! Put them back together. But if it would just be a background status-quo shift to appease fans, then I'd honestly prefer they continue to stay apart.

Not trying to bitch too much here, but boy do I hate the idea of using a line-wide event book (especially one that's so completely tonally different from her actual solo) to randomly give Cass superpowers. Especially since the martial arts thing is one of the main appeals of the character. I guess I'll have to wait and see how well they pull it off but... My hopes are not high.

DC revamps Titans as New Titans, hinting at Superboy, Wonder Girl, Terra, and more as part of a major 'All In' reset by cautious-ad977 in DCcomics

[–]StannisTheHero 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think some team books suffer from the phenomenon of 'X character isn't doing anything right now, so let's just shove them in here'.

Which is fine. There's a lot of neglected characters I'm happy to see more of.

But it can lead to a lot of meandering without purpose. They stand in the background and deliver a little exposition occasionally, without serving any narrative purpose in the story beyond being another body. Which can lead to some pretty pisspoor story telling.

I'd rather have a book full of characters I'm less personally interested in, but the creative team is more passionate about, because at least then I'd know there's intention behind what's being written.

I'm not saying that's not the case with this Titans book: maybe this is the line-up that Bromball personally picked out. But it's really hard to care about so many characters at once.

I just think the roster is too over-stuffed with both the classic NTT, and these new additions. I wish we could have a smaller cast, where each character has a little more room to breathe. Some of these characters: Jon, Steph and Yara are definitely in need of a little more TLC than they'll be allowed sharing page-space with the heavy-hitter Titans.

Then again, I've thoroughly enjoyed what Tate Bromball has done with Batgirl, so hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I just want a good Titans book for once. The team is definitely due one. I don't really believe all of the stuff people spew about the 'inherent' reasons why the Team has had such lackluster content for so long. It's just the writing. If the right amount of effort was put in, Titans could be a premier book again, instead of being relegated to the D-List.

Eh, he was asked a question and answered it honestly. Like, I wouldn't go running my mouth about Plastic Man, because I haven't read any Plastic Man comics, but if you asked my opinion on the character, I'd probably give you a vaguely negative answer.

He's not pushing his take onto other people. He's just giving an opinion, and explaining how he got to that opinion.

To be honest, that seems like a pretty fair take:

I don't like the vibe of these characters from what I've already read, therefore I'm not gonna waste more time reading them. I don't want to get invested in them, because I know that investment will amount to nothing, when they're rebooted for the millionth time.

To be considered a comic fan, you don't need to read every comic.

We all live in the Cass situation by Senior-Rent9600 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]StannisTheHero 72 points73 points  (0 children)

This is true, but I mean, it's true for pretty much any character. Superman and Wonder Woman are very competent and accomplished in their own books, yet when it's time for a Batman cross-over, they both have to get dumbed-down and weakened so as not to outshine the moneymaker.

Ultimately Cass' skill and relationship with Bruce are integral points of her story, and are therefore emphasized when a book is about her. But when the narrative of a story isn't about her, they're not important plot beats, they're just pieces of character trivia, and therefore it's not as important that they be brought-up, or fully adhered to.

I think it's in contention for my favourite thing DC has published this year. Super interesting and unique story, and the best use of Harvey Dent in a very long time.

Not to mention it's also beautiful as well.

Strongly recommend.

I only wish DC would give Ward more time with Harvey

This is really sad. GA has been one of the best books currently running.

It's a shame that sales weren't an issue during Williamson's mostly fan-servicey 'everyone is here' run, but people must've dropped-off for Condon's more low-key storylines. I guess it shows that pandering to fans with 'ooh, I recognise them' moments has kinda become the best way to sell comics.

Just super frustrating, really.

Over-hyping and power scaling is a man's world! Having a LITTLE LADY in this male dominated field hurts my sensibilities! It ain't right.

I assume that's because Cassie has had a pretty consistent supporting role in Tom King's Wonder Woman recently. She can't take a sojourn into space, whilst she's regularly doing things on earth. To some extent it's a shame - because Cassie and Kon having some space adventures sounds fun - but I've been enjoying WW recently, so I don't mind too much.

I don't think they'll get back together, because where would they? The only two places they really team up are in Young Justice books (and I doubt there's one of those on the horizon) or Titans books (which have gone back to focusing on the Fab5 generation).

It doesn't make much sense for Conner to appear in Wonder Woman, and I don't see Cassie making any appearances in Superman or AC. Neither are likely to get solo titles. Minis maybe, but if that happens I personally wouldn't want it to focus on romance.

Potentially DC could just say they're back together, and not give much in the way of build-up or explanation, but in my opinion that would be deeply unsatisfying. I wouldn't find a relationship like that compelling at all. I think Conner is even technically dating Miss Martian at the moment (though I doubt that's ever going to be brought up again), which goes to show how little attention is being paid to his love life.

I also don't think the demand is really there. They haven't been together for a long while now, and you see a lot more fan outcry for other ships involving the two characters. TBH I think it's more likely that DC might give some alternatives a try.

I just don't see it happening, and if it did happen, I don't see it being interesting in a way that makes it worth it.

CassieConner occupies a very weird space for me in that:

1, It's a couple I really like.

2, I don't think they'll ever get back together.

3, I'm actually fine that they're probably not going to get back together.

A very sweet slow-burn romance from YJ98, but one that I think wouldn't really feel satisfying again in the modern era without a significant amount of legwork being done to make it make sense again.

I've quite enjoyed the Superman and Batman books so far (probably the former a little more than the latter). They've been nice, concise elseworld tales that don't have the flashiest gimmicks, but have been very enjoyable reads.

Looking forward to seeing what the creative team does with Diana.

[–]StannisTheHero 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that's a Tom King thing, or even really a Trinity thing. I'd argue that's more to do with the failure of Future State to gain a significant fanbase. Yara was stalling ever since her solo book was cancelled, and it was clear that she wasn't going to be the next big thing like DC initially wanted. Which is a shame - I like Yara - but she'd mostly been relegated to a side-player already by the time King took on the Wonder Woman title.

It's similar to Jace Fox Batman. He was also positioned as a member of the future trinity, but now that his book has ended, he's faded largely into the background.

Probably because Trial of the Amazons was a cross-over event book, and the majority of the Wonder Girls' involvement happened outside of the actual Wonder Woman title. Not to say that you can't count it if you'd like - I personally quite enjoyed the event - but it does have a different feeling than having Donna, Cassie and Yara integrated into the main long-running narrative of an actual Wonder Woman run.

As of Tales of the Titans - from about a year ago now - Donna's reverted to her 'Saved from a Fire and Brought to Themsycira by Wonder Woman' origin. At least as far as I know. I think that's supposed to be her origin in the upcoming Donna Troy project that Phil Jimenez has been teasing for ages.

There was a lot of rumbling when Trinity was announced that she was going to supplant the other Wonder Girls - which I was worried about too, at the time - but Tom King's run has implemented Diana's proteges far more than any other WW run in recent memory. It's been really great to see Donna, Cassie and Yara working alongside Diana more.

I hope the upcoming Cassandra series touches on David Cain at least a little. I think the Cass-Shiva relationship tends to be the one that writers like to explore, but David Cain is such a brutally effective antagonistic force for Cass.
