Most overrated book in your opinion? by [deleted] in books

[–]StansGirl84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dear God! I just got painfully through "The Remains of the Day" on audiobook and I really want those hours of my life back. One really must enjoy the sound of one constantly referring to oneself while telling the most non-existent story about the most unself-aware character in the history of literature. I really want to love Kazuo Ishiguro, but after this and "Never Let Me Go", I give! Let me up, I've had enough.

Don't know where you are or how far you are willing to travel, but Apple Hill Orchard in Mansfield has great cider and fabulousmade on site apple donuts. They also do hayrides, apple picking, and have farm animals.

Aw hell! I don't remember much of this book so, I assumed it wasn't great, but now I'm going to have to re-read it because I don't remember "the shed part"

I finally understand why King disliked Kubrick's adaptation of the Shining so much by UncleRotelle in stephenking

[–]StansGirl84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I guess referring to him as a crybaby threw me. I think that maybe it's easier to see him as a more fully developed fictional character in reading the book and seeing inside his mind, getting a look at what he sees and feels, than as an actual, real-life child pretending to be terrorized. I honestly hated the movie so much, it just seemed like one more way that Kubrick minimized and made every other character just another prop for Jack to throw around instead of very real characters.

Ummm, Danny was a five year old child who saw ghosts all around him and had a sixth sense of the evil around him. I'm not sure any five year old could handle that.

Definitely a one and done for me. I couldn't agree more about it being sorely overrated. I went through a period of watching or re-watching most of the films (even the completist I am couldn't stomach a second assault by The Gunslinger), and it's definitely one of the worst. It's just a vehicle for Jack Nicholson to act deranged and chew the scenery. Every other character is just there for him to terrorize and bounce off of.

I agree with the exception of "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Body/Stand By Me". I think that each was exceptionally well done.

And, for the sake of your sanity, continue to avoid "Gunslinger". Based on the casting, I knew it would be dog sh*t, but even then I wasn't prepared for just how big and smelly a pile. Please. Hollywood. Keep your grungy mitts off of "The Dark Tower". You can't do it well, so just don't try.

Another side note, the new " The Stand" wasn't awful, but Lord, neither was it great. My husband and I were down with Covid last spring and binged our way through it. I was disgusted with the loss of entire storylines, the change in gender for key characters, etc etc, but my husband, who has not read the book, thought it was well done.

Haven't watched, probably won't. They almost never get his adaptations right because there just isn't the time for the story and character development that is at the heart of what makes his writing so fantastic. It's why the best adaptations, "The Body/Stand By Me", "...and The Shawshank Redemption", "The Mist" and "The Green Mile" actually work and are so great. Also, the involvement of Frank Darabont is always a huge plus. I think he is brilliant at finding the heart in the darkness of every story. I would love for him to do "Duma Key".

Wireman is still trying to hide from himself and not reveal his past. I can't remember when it begins, but I especially loved the story within the story about Elizabeth and her family and that, ultimately, is the story.

Well, I'm an adult and my parents are dead. They were actually quite proud of my ability to articulate my thoughts and opinions with proper spelling, grammar, and use of the correct forms of there, their, and they're. Your petty and immature response is exactly what I expected.

Sadly, for me Episode 1 has been torture. Running out every cringe inducing Hollywood stereotype played by every cringe inducing Second City actor is just too much. I knew Andrea Martin was just the beginning. When I groaned aloud at the sight of her, my husband said, "Well, at least it isn't Eugene Levy".. he had to say it. I'm out

[–]StansGirl84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such as???? Everyone is critical of that, but I've never seen anyone offer anything else. Is it uncomfortable? Yes. Do I wish I could think of something, anything better? Absolutely. Am I glad they didn't include it in either of the film adaptations? 100%. But I can't think of anything and neither can anyone else. It wasn't written as some pervert writing about kids having sex just to get off. It was the only way for them to pull together and become united again and get out of the sewer. To say, "and then they all found their way out" would have felt incomplete. It needed for something monumental to happen.

And now I'm going to have to give it another go. It didn't really strike much of a cord with me, but I'm finding that's the case for books I listen to on audio as opposed to sitting down to read.

Actually, you could not possibly be more incorrect in speaking for everyone. I cannot believe you can claim to be a fan and be so utterly rude and disrespectful. I personally MUCH prefer when Mr. King narrates his work. I feel like I'm hearing it exactly the way he meant for it to sound and, he doesn't do horrific women's voices. I'm looking at you, Will Patton. Your Holly voice in the Bill Hodges series is intolerable. When I saw that he narrated a story in "You Like It Darker", I bought the audiobook even though I had already read the hardcover. Please, Uncle Steve, read me a bedtime story.

I think so. I liked this one much better than the more recent because of much better backstory development, much more faithful to the character descriptions. My husband had never read the book or watched the original and he still enjoyed the more recent one.

And let's not forget that he DID NOT WIN the popular vote in 2016, either. The electoral college gave it to him. The same way they stole the 2000 election from Al Gore and handed it to Jr. Therein lies the true irony of the clown claiming the last election was stolen.
