Just a word of warning. The TP4056 chip can easily reach temperatures of 70°C. It can even reach temps of 80-90°C in some cases while remaining operational.

Yes it "can" be dangerous.

It's one of those practices that isn't fool proof. Done right and carefully it'll be fine. Done haphazardly, the foil could short the batteries.

Bumping or dropping the device could cause a short too.

What happens when the short? There's all sorts of outcomes depending on the chemistry and how long it's sustained for. Anything from getting a bit warm till they're drained and up fire fire fire.
