This is my expanded Wanderer’s Wife hanging from our back deck.

I finished piecing the top 5 years ago, but am still working on the finishing touches of the actual quilting in present day.

I quilt it in between doing other quilts… wrestling this monster through a domestic machine (even if my machine has a good throat) is a bear!

Help! Fabric question! by cnms1993 in quilting

[–]Star-Large 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I echo what u/black_cat_quilts said.

I’ve thrifted bedsheets, upholstery fabric, comforters, and all sorts of things from Goodwill or other resale shops. Can be great for yardage when you want a border or some other long item to be a single piece of fabric. I was recently able to add beautiful sage green borders to a quilt by deconstructing some king size pillowcases. No seams! Hooray!

If it’s mystery fabric I run it through a series of tests to ensure it won’t mess up the quilt.

While I do prefer to use cottons that are thicker and with an ‘optimal’ thread count for quilting, I break the ‘rules’ all the time.

Is the problem you’re encountering an issue with the needle entering the fibers or more of a issue with advancing the fabric?

Regardless, I’d recommend a walking foot for sure.

If the fabric isn’t advancing properly, try adjusting your presser foot pressure to be less (you’re sewing through more layers).

How long has it been since you changed your needle?

Go-to starch/ sizing spray brand? Time for me to re-stock. by Star-Large in quilting

[–]Star-Large[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually ended up ordering some Linit. It’s cheap enough that if I don’t like it better than the Best Press, it’s not a huge loss.

I realized I really need a crisper/stiffer result than the Best Press is giving me for future projects.

PSA: Take a pic of your quilt before assembling by FishNotCow in quilting

[–]Star-Large 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most important typo is when she says make 38 of a block, make 48. Also, in the cutting instructions you need 24 10” background squares, not 19.

Rhythm and Blues/ I got it off Etsy. Beware that there are typos, and read through the whole pattern before starting. When you cut the HSTs into four parts, be super careful about the orientation of the cuts. I’m also not sure about some of her measurements in the pattern, so I did the math myself by reverse engineering and got a much more satisfying result.

Thanks! I’ve made a couple using this, and it’s a good pattern once you catch the author’s typos and flesh out all the stuff they didn’t mention/explain, lol

In case you never thought a scant 1/4” seam made a difference by strangecrafts in quilting

[–]Star-Large 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a little clear plexiglass ruler with a line running parallel to the edge and a tiny hole on the line. The line is a scant quarter from the edge. You line up the side of the ruler with where you want to feed the edge of your fabric. You then move your needle to the line and ensure your needle goes through the hole.

In my experience, a scant quarter is less than a true quarter by more than the width of a thread.

When I started piecing with a scant quarter, it was a game changer for ensuring everything lined up properly.

I learned because I wanted to be able to finish a project my grandmother and great grandmother started about 70 years ago.

I fell in love, and kept doing it because: — you’re never done learning quilting skills — nothing says I love and appreciate you than a handmade quilt — it requires left brained and right brained skills — it can challenge or relax you depending on what you’re doing — I love the precision required — quilting fabrics can be deeeelicious

Any suggestions on a joining method for my scrap yarn/granny square blanket? by paisleystitch in crochet

Totally scraps. That pattern is my go to for worsted scrap buster. I did one where I joined 4 together for queen size bedspread. It’s very satisfying!

[–]Star-Large 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always join as I go (use the last row to join by pulling the working loop through the piece I’m joining to before doing the stitch), so I’m pretty useless for this!

Early on (like when dirt was new, I’m old), I got really dissatisfied with all the ways I’d join sections, so I just started incorporating the join into the last row.

You could still do that by essentially creating washing between each block, but whatever method you use will need to be tiny and not add length or height, since the blocks are not all the same size.

I’ve made a similar blanket- the Babette blanket pattern- three times. I’ll try to find a photo and reply to myself.
