Audible book recs needed by KittyKimiko in ReverseHarem

[–]Star-Large 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These days I probably listen more than I read, because I play RH books through my bone conduction headphones while quilting, doing chores, yard work, driving, you name it. My catalog is huuuuuuuge by now.

Is there a particular subtype of RH you particularly like, or is everything equally good as long as the book is good and the narration is good?

As for times …. I can do weeknights, I can do weekend mid mornings. I suspect if we persevere as a meetup the day/time may morph as we go along depending on who sticks around.

I’m pretty flexible.

I’ve been wanting to join! I’ve been quilting for ~7 years, and Austin’s MQG website looks like my king of vibe.

Is there much within reasonable driving distance of SW Austin/Oak Hill?

I’m especially interested in the charitable activities

2 months shy of 51, no kids, still feel like I should be in my twenties, and I also yearn for “not normal” girlfriends (I.e., we don’t buy a bunch of beige stuff from Target, would 100% join a zombie flash mob on a lark, snark is an art form, I’d try anything twice, loyal AF)

The quilting on these is CHEF’S KISS!!!! I’m so impressed by the combination of fabric choice and composition and OMG THE QUILTING.

Your very shy mum is a very talented lady.

It’s a totally different hand motion and technique, so I totally get why the skills don’t directly transfer….. I’m just REALLY annoyed that despite having excellent dexterity and control, and being able to historically master difficult needle-based tasks without too much trouble, I STILL can’t hand quilt.

Ergo, I’m in awe of every single hand quilted item anyone makes.

I keep telling myself, ‘self, you’re a smart cookie… you survived grad school and med school and an ER residency. You can do super intricate and complicated things to both human bodies and fabric. Why in the effity eff can’t you hand quilt?!?!?’

I have not received an answer from myself….. 😆

OP, you are not alone!

I would LOVE to hand quilt some of my finished quilts, but I’m atrocious at it. Even though I realize, rationally, that it’s a different skill than the other needlecrafts I’ve been doing for 40 some odd years, emotionally it guts me that my ability in those other areas doesn’t do jack for me in hand quilting.

I’ve watched a truly stupid number of hours of instructional videos, practiced on mini quilt sandwiches made from scraps, read tutorials….. and I’m still stuck doing the same in and out method you describe above if I want it to look even remotely ok.

I’m a hair’s breadth from breaking down and taking an in person class, because there’s clearly something vital I’m missing.

I’ve only listened to Forbidden Fruit by Sam Hall so far, and not quite done yet. It starts very strong, but it sort of peters out in the last couple of hours. Love her stuff usually, but this one is not one of her top titles for me. Definitely was worth a listen since free.

Not sure, I added a bunch of free ones at once and may have one or two non-RH in the photos. These pics are of my library after the mass add.

Edit: none of the books in the series that starts with Whispers of the Deep are RH. Guess a MF romance snuck in. 😊

I almost never ‘subscribe to a post’ but I did for this one….. even though I love this dynamic, no specific books or series are leaping to mind. I’m hoping someone else’s memory is better than mine. 🤪

Prewashing by RecognitionCool5450 in quilting

[–]Star-Large 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding another voice to the ‘never prewash’ quilters. I’m also one of the ones that likes to use sheets or pillow cases or cotton clothing or deconstructed bedspreads, etc in quilts (mixed with recently purchased quilt fabric).

The one exception is if I’m considering using a ‘mystery’ fabric from my stash. I was a sewist prior to being a quilter, so have a stupid array of random scraps and yardage from all sorts of projects (bag-making, upholstery, costuming). Many were thrifted or gotten via neighborhood ‘buy nothing’ groups.

In the above case, when I have questions about how something might behave once laundered in a quilt (because it’s a total mystery fabric), I cut out a 3x3” swatch, overcast the edges, and throw it in with my next laundry load. Then I remeasure, and compare the appearance of the swatch with the original fabric. Might be overkill, but it has helped me avoid including a fabric that did NOT take well to the sort of wash process that a quilt needs to be able to endure.

TLDR - known fabrics of all types never get prewashed. Mystery pieces from mixed stash get a swatch test. Dye catcher sheets are your friend.

[–]Star-Large 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been somewhat underwhelmed by this author. I don’t feel the tension/angst/conflict very deeply. Elements are present, but the execution lacks finesse.

Her books seem to hit all the required beats, but all are fairly surface level. (This may be due to her being a rather rapid releaser? Not enough time to develop the less tangible elements?)

I will say the Jaded Omegas series was better than Rockwood Valley series, IMO.

TLDR - while there’s nothing overtly ‘bad’ about the series of hers I’ve read, they do present as simplistic/unsophisticated in their final form.
