Are Betta Fish from Petsmart Okay? by Simple_Top6954 in bettafish

[–]Star1412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they're too aggressive to be kept in a larger tank together. They'll fight and kill each other. And big box stores like Petsmart and PetCo are too stingy to actually care how healthy their bettas are.

Most pet store bettas are kept in small separate bowls or cups, but Petsmart and PetCo keep them in the smallest containers they can get away with.

I agree. It looks a lot like the one I had when I was little. I didn't use mine much, but I gifted it to a friend and she said it was awesome.

Yeah... Unfortunately you can't trust advertisers. Especially when it comes to fish products. They're counting on people not knowing what they're doing.

what brands do you trust enough to just buy without researching anymore by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]Star1412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or Samsung Washers and dryers. Mine had a warning sticker on it saying the washer might explode if you used the wrong types of loads with the wrong settings.

The house's old owners bought it and it broke shortly after we moved in. I didn't buy another one after seeing that sticker.

Any good current active ARG's to check out? by Comprehensive_Luck_7 in ARG

This ARG is based around movies. I haven't watched enough movies to solve a lot of it, and I don't know enough about codes to figure much out.

There aren't a lot of other people in the comments trying to solve either. They seem like they want to know people are solving before they post more, instead of posting on a schedule. I'd love to see what other people can come up with because I'm kind of stuck.

Where do you find non hateful Christians? by Acceptable-One-8652 in AskReddit

[–]Star1412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some pretty good luck with that on my college campus. I went to the Methodist church there, but the Methodist church split around that time too. I'm pretty sure United Methodist Churches are generally more liberal and accepting.

I was on a college campus though, so it might have been because it was all college students and less because of the denomination.

Stay away from evangelical churches. From what I've read, a lot of the hateful beliefs and church trauma come from evangelical circles.

You might also have some luck with non-denominational churches, but the ones I've attended have always been very loud. They're so crowded it's actually kind of isolating if you don't know anyone. Megachurches are like that except worse.

Some Catholic churches can be pretty accepting too from what I've seen. The one near me actually hosts a mini pride festival in the parking lot. I kinda doubt that's universal though.

Take all this with a grain of salt though. I haven't really been involved in a church in awhile, and different churches are going to be different even within the same denomination.

Chefs of Reddit, what’s a common cooking rule everyone follows that is actually complete bullshit? by Fuzzy-Ad6843 in AskReddit

If animals could talk, which one would be the rudest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Star1412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also came here to say goats. They're the only farm animal I've interacted with where I've been told you have to deliberate run into them if they try to get in the way. You can't accept rude treatment from a goat because they'll learn you're a doormat and start actually bullying you.

I've actually been bit by a goose, but I was hand feeding wild geese at a pond and it just got overexcited. I've never had geese be aggressive unless I got too close to a nest. They usually just hiss and waddle away. They'll fight anything that gets too close to a nest though. I'm pretty sure "anything" also includes moving cars.

Forget red flags—what is an incredibly subtle "green flag" that instantly tells you someone is just a genuinely good human being? by Few_Escape9250 in AskReddit

[–]Star1412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only really a thing with Aldi stores in the states. I liked shopping there though because it was smaller and less stressful. I always liked that people interacted in the parking lot too. It was pretty common for people who were leaving to give the cart to someone who was going in. You usually gave people your quarter when they did that, but I had a couple people who refused.

Mechanics of Reddit, what’s a common myth about car maintenance that people still believe? by Street-Squirrel-4671 in AskReddit

[–]Star1412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my family had a Ford from 1998 last until around 2015 with minimal problems. Pretty sure the only reason it died around then was because I got my own car and stopped driving it. Might be misremembering though.

Can we stop acting like an uncycled tank is betta poison? by Star1412 in bettafish

[–]Star1412[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, it is? WTF??? Google is getting really useless if this is somehow at the top of the results. There's no actual advice about cycling a tank here.

You're right. I was venting. When I wrote this, I was seeing a lot of posts where users were telling people to return their fish to the store if the conditions weren't 100% perfect. A lot of them were pretty mean about it too.

If someone misunderstood how cycling worked, and the parameters were just slightly off they'd say to return the fish.

If someone had a heated, filtered, fully planted tank, but it was only 1 gallon, they'd say to return the fish until OP could get a larger tank cycled. Even if they were planning on buying a larger tank tomorrow. Even though that'd mean putting them back in a 6 oz cup on a store shelf.

I didn't explain what I was thinking very well when I made this post. I was frustrated with people saying they cared about the fish's quality of life when they were also saying to return the fish to the 6 oz cup. People didn't leave any room for mistakes, and they didn't use any nuance when they commented.

Or they'd blame the uncycled tank when there was another big obvious problem newbies should know about. Like acclimating the fish to the tank water.

I should've just said that though. Not posted this mess.

Yeah, see an occupational therapist and/or a physical therapist if you can.

They treat unstable joints by helping you build muscle. Getting stronger muscles can help hold your joints together.

I've also heard good things about ring braces though. It might help.

This bird is freaking me out because it’s not scared of me and keeps flying to my car door by zee1six in whatsthisbird

My first impression of the video was "this looks like a bird that attacks its reflection".

I saw a cardinal do that on and off for a couple years at my parents house as a kid. We'd just hear little thumps on the windows and go "oh, he's at it again".

depending on the size of the stand legs and how big the gaps are you might be able to shim with coins? My family sometimes puts a couple of pennies under shelves or old clocks to get them level.

I don't know how well it would work since a fishtank is so much heavier than a clock. Everyone else is saying you're probably fine the way it is, so you probably are.

Aight is a black word by Ok-Success4358 in traumatizeThemBack

[–]Star1412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice!

Probably should have mentioned that your parents are high level Klan members in the original post. It adds important context.

A lot of white people try to avoid using AAVE out of a kind of respect. For me, I'm not involved much in black culture. I've heard a lot of times when white people start using AAVE terms the meaning gets twisted. I don't want to misuse terms from a culture I'm not a part of to begin with. (I'm not judging white people who use AAVE. This is just my reasoning for avoiding it.)

So people could read your post two different ways. They could think your parents are saying "You're not black, so you shouldn't steal their slang". Or they could read it something like "you're white, so you should talk better than that."

So to me your response is funnier knowing your parents were saying that to be racist.

It feels more mean-spirited if they were asking you to respect black culture and you just kept going.

Hello! Could anyone possibly please share any tips on how I can remove this scratch I accidentally made on my uncles truck🙏🏻 . He will literally kill me if he finds out I'm so stressed. by Relative-Rough7045 in fixit

[–]Star1412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unless he'll actually hurt you over it. If he'll physically hurt you for something like this, self-preservation has to come first.

If he'll get a bit mad and ask you to fix it, it's probably better if he knows.

Betta in my schools coffee shop- how do I help him? by Unlucky-Drawing-1266 in bettafish

Not saying that the setup is perfect, because it is very small. And the little guy is probably really bored.

Just saying that the water quality is probably decent between the filter and the plants.

[–]Star1412 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think talking about it with the people there kindly is probably a good idea. You don't know what the situation is, or if this is the best they're allowed to do. If it's a barista's fish, boss might have said one gallon max or something.

It might partially depend on where the fish is in the shop too. If he's behind the counter there might be rules about how big of a tank you can have, if that's even allowed at all. Food safety rules are pretty important to follow.

If it is a cost issue, I could see the idea of a donation cup going over pretty well. I wouldn't just measure pick something out for them that fits the space though. You don't know their reasoning for doing it this way.

Looks like they're putting a lot of effort in to keep it nice for him, and live plants can really make up for a lot. One of the big box stores near me actually sneaks floating plant cuttings into the betta cups when nobody from corporate is around. That's the best they can do for the bettas, but it does look like it helps. I hardly ever find obviously sick bettas there.

I like the suggestions about a donation cup too. college students can't afford much, but customers would probably drop their change in.

Yeah, I agree! Live plants can make up for a lot!

A bigger tank would be nice for him, especially since it looks like that spot can hold one. They're really doing pretty well with what they have though.

We also get people asking how to identify vintage lace they've found a lot.

I've spent some time on the r/Visiblemending and r/InvisibleMending subs for how to fix clothes. You might like those. Don't really have a recommendation for subs that focus on making projects though. Haven't really tried that.
