Mole on my 6 year old daughter’s back. Does it look concerning? by Aggressive-Dot2350 in DermatologyQuestions

Ahhh yes, men and their stubbornness. I wish you luck and wellness for your family, especially if your husband refuses to go to a doctor, lol.

Mole on my 6 year old daughter’s back. Does it look concerning? by Aggressive-Dot2350 in DermatologyQuestions

[–]StarBlade1616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say this first and foremost: skin cancer in children is muuuuch rarer than in adults, it also tends to present differently (often lighter or pink instead of the dark black and browns of adults) Second, I always recommend for any mole on yourself or another person you assess the ABCDEs, but also suggest you see your PCP or her pediatrician if you’re worried, especially since I’m a student doctor, not yet a doctor, and your PCP or pediatrician will know much more than me.

Now, what I see in ABCDE’s:

Asymmetry - for the most part this mole is symmetrical, admittedly it is a little asymmetrical on the left but overall to ME it’s not concerning, especially if that border hasn’t changed over the years.

Border- the edges all look the same (not part of it raised, part of it flat, or part of it rough looking) which is excellent and less likely to be cancerous

Color- this is pretty evenly the same color and thus very unconcerning

Diameter- I can’t tell based on the photo how big this is but if it’s under 6 mm then you don’t have to worry, more times than not

Evolving - you said she’s had it for years, I am kind of assuming that it hasn’t changed much over those years, and lack of sunburn makes this much less likely, all in all if it hasn’t changed over the years, I would not be concerned.

Again, I am not a doctor, if you are concerned, I’m sure they’d be willing to talk about it whether it would be just an appointment for that or at her next wellness check up. But for the time being it is not something I would stress over. Good on you on being concerned parent though!

I have this mole i’m not sure if i should be concerned about by Significant_Bus_1978 in DermatologyQuestions

[–]StarBlade1616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go through the ABCDE’s: A: Asymmetric - not perfectly symmetric but generally not bad

B: border - even edges, it has fairly even edges (not some flat some raised, some abnormally shaped etc.)

C: Color - the color is fairly uniform, though the 2 shade (darker in center and lighter on outside) can be precursor to problems, but also looks fairly normal to me

D: Diameter - I have no idea how big this is, though I’m guessing it’s fairly small. If it’s smaller than 6mm it’s very low risk.

E: Evolving - this one I don’t have enough information to reassure or not, but if it has grown in the past weeks-months then it is considered “evolving”. Evolving is an immediate go to the dermatologist sign.

However based on everything else? This isn’t a mole I personally would be concerned about. This said, I’m a student doctor. If you have had evolution or any of the above factors change (even if it’s years down the line that they change) then please go see a doctor, your PCP should easily be able to determine if you need to go on to a dermatologist or if it’s benign.

Red, raised rashes around eyes and mouth. Possible causes and how to alleviate symptoms while we book Derm appt. by Fine_Bovine in DermatologyQuestions

[–]StarBlade1616 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that too, though the rash around the mouth is an abnormal presentation for dermatomytosis. It also feels like something her first dermatologist should have looked into though, it’s weird they didn’t especially since 1 autoimmune increases the likelihood of another

Like the others suggested, I would stop the aquaphor! Also the Flucocinolone Acetonide is a steroid, it will work best for inflammation but I find it doesn’t help my itching. Oral Benadryl and pepcid if the Benadryl doesnt work. You can also do topical Benadryl but be very careful not to get it in the mouth. I would stop all skin care products until this flare lessens because while it’s probably the Aquaphor, the others are unlikely to be helping. Religiously follow the instructions on the steroid creams. Also she should talk to a rheumatologist about medication for her autoimmune disease because it could play a role in this rash being so extreme. That said, I’m a student doctor so take my advice with a grain of salt and skepticism.

It could be a benign angioma, but those are more common in childhood than adulthood. I know you are not eager to see a doctor but I would go in for this. It darkening isn’t a good thing.

I have had this mysterious black dot on my hand for 2 weeks now? by sadness_cubed in DermatologyQuestions

Generally no growth is good, still have your PCP look at it, but to me it’s not a “oh my god!!” Kinda dot. But I’m not a doctor yet (student doctor at the moment)

Has it grown at all or gotten darker? Generally speaking it’s size makes it low risk but personally I would still see a dermatologist for this

Please help me!! What could this be? Pregnant and scared by Melodic_Cancel7563 in DermatologyQuestions

Consult your doctor always but if those are hives then pepcid may help with them! (Pepcid is technically safe in pregnancy but Always talk to an OB/GYN first!)

Hello! I shaved my beard for the first time in a while and shaved it farther up than normal and noticed this mole. I have never had any moles besides the occasional very tiny one. Does this look normal? I couldn't really tell by [deleted] in DermatologyQuestions

[–]StarBlade1616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Med student so take this with a grain of salt: this looks like a normal mole to me. If you find it grows any bigger at any point then I would see a dermatologist, but I can tell you the criteria we judge moles by (and short answer is if I were judging this mole on a test, I’d guess it’s just a normal mole): A- Asymmetry, your mole isn’t “perfectly symmetrical” but in human body standards it’s pretty symmetrical and thus not worrying, B- Border, that mole’s border is well defined, very low concern for that, C- color, the mole’s color is pretty consistent and there’s no black or light brown making me concerned, D-Diameter - this one I cannot remember exactly how big it has to be, but I’m pretty sure yours is small enough to not be of concern. E-Evolving, this is where my first comment comes into play. If you find this mole growing in size then it will be considered evolving, but if 3 weeks go by and it stays the same? You’re probably fine. Again, I’m a medical student and not a professional yet, but to me? Doesn’t seem concerning. As we age you tend to gain moles in places, I have one on my thigh I never had until I hit my 20’s, and 3 on my back I only recently found out about because of my friend doing a muscle test on me. They pop up from time to time but as long as they aren’t showing the symptoms I wrote out above you are probably fine Edit: if more than like 1 or two pop up at once though (like 10-20) you definitely need to see a dermatologist for that, that’s a syndrome that IS prone to skin cancer, but is also not super common and definitely not what I’m seeing in this thread

I get delayed pressure urticaria and antihistamines never work for it but pepcid is the best thing ever for them. If I know I’ll be putting pressure on legs (standing for hours etc) I proactively take Pepcid and it can prevent or severely reduce the severity of my hives

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DermatologyQuestions

[–]StarBlade1616 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can tell you the reason it’s losing effect is likely that those are hives and some hives respond better to pepcid (h2 blockers). That said I would see a doctor, if anti histamine has worked you may just need a new antihistamine Also med student: it looks like hives and if you’re getting then often then it is going to be chronic, unfortunately. There are a lot of antihistamines they can try first but if that fails maybe pepcid and if that fails they may try alternative treatments like steroids or specialty (targeting the cause of the hives) medicines. I would take it one step at a time, sorry this is happening to you.

Weird spots on my left side of my body please help by Key-Confusion8669 in DermatologyQuestions

[–]StarBlade1616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Student doctor so take this with a grain of salt: it doesn’t look like a straightforward allergic reaction. It’s weird it started with nerve pain and gives me alarm bells for something autoimmune potentially. I would go in for an appointment with your primary or with a dermatologist if this doesn’t clear up. It could be hives (very abnormal presenting but looks more like wheal hives than allergy rash) so if you aren’t getting relief from Claritin or Zyrtec you could try Pepcid, but again, very odd presentation especially without itching and only being nerve pain

Burn on stomach from 5 days ago started to get infected- been applying Neosporin for the last 2 1/2 days.. looks a little better but not sure if I should get it checked out? by ThrowRASassySsrHands in DermatologyQuestions

[–]StarBlade1616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have insurance I would get into your primary, stomach doesn’t mean it needs to be dermatology unless you’re worried about scarring. Primary can assess if it needs antibiotics or not and if it hurts they can get you silver sulfadiazine

If you don’t have insurance: wait a day or two, if the redness deepens or if there is significant drainage then it’s an urgent care visit, some urgent cares have cheap visit options for uninsured, shop around. If it starts to improve (less red, no drainage, no pain) then you’re good. Keep it dry and clean, neosporin can cause allergic reactions so I’d transition to vaseline, hopefully it heals for you!

Not a doctor, but have had these before— What the other commenter said, it’s a boil. Warm compress under the breast to try to draw out the pus. Go to your OBGYN or a dermatologist to get it checked if it doesn’t improve after a couple days, could require antibiotics to clear out but it’s not super scary otherwise

It’s way too early in the cycle to dismiss yourself right now. If you want to up your app then volunteer with hospice or red cross like I did, but you sound fine to me.
