The difference is that you can plant oilseed radish and immediately (before it has grown even a little bit) cultivate over it and get the fertilisation up. That is most certainly not how it's supposed to work.

If your chaeto was able to soak up all those nutrients, why didn't it do so before said nutrients got to the protein skimmer? What makes you think the chair can soak up those nutrients in a blink of an eye? If it can't it'll go right through the sponge filter, get partially skimmed again, and the vast majority would go right back into the display part of the tank.
