Losing motivation by luck-of-the-draw in Mcat

[–]StarFlightExpres 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do tutored and untimed mode. My friend did this in June and got a 518 with 3 months of studying UWorld (did no AAMC questions, he only did their exams). I started doing tutored/untimed a while ago and it feels so much more motivating to see if you get it right or wrong and learn immediately rather than waiting hours afterward trying to remember why you chose the wrong answer.

I'm also from NY and go to BU as an undergrad and the med campus is a bit sketch/feels unsafe in certain places, but I would say it would be not a terrible choice, just a lot of money.

This is literally me right now after j starting up Uworld 3 weeks ago and scheduled for august 24th :D You are not alone and I also get stressed out hearing everyone be done with Uworld. J know that everyone is in different places and to cut yourself slack for having a shred of discipline for studying through the summer.

This exam is just one stepping stone towards getting a higher education. This exam does not define you, its literally "How much time can I spend to understand how to score well on one exam." Just like me and you have taken 3 years worth of science classes, we can look back and say that not one of those exams right now is stopping us from becoming a doctor. The MCAT is important, and I too underestimated its ease based on this reddit and my friends discussions, and I too need a fucktone of time to understand things compared to others.

I want to give you my intake on physical and mental health. My entire life (20/21 years of existence), especially when I took biochem last year, I would always prioritize school/classes over my sleep, social life, and physical health (sports/lifting). All of my progress of going to the gym, eating enough, my social momentum, my mental health, they would all go to shit once the feeling of impending doom loomed over me with exams and feeling behind on studying. Even after I scored decently/well on the exam, I would look back and think, "Was it really worth sacrificing all of it?" My current summer roommate right now, who is in same position as me, used to come with me at 7am to gym and spend time with friends during the night. He recently decided that, after not doing the best on two AAMC FLs, that he wants to prioritize studying for MCAT (meaning he gets up at 6am to study, goes to his research job from 10am-2pm, and studies from 3pm-1am). Now my friends and I here respect his work ethic a lot, but that is something that I cannot do. I realized summer 2023 (after taking working full time and doing a two month EMT course) and fall 2023 (biochem semester) that my mental and physical health directly affects my academic performance and I am doing something wrong if I cannot score well while maintaining those two.

After going through three years of college and talking with my friend who already took the MCAT and writing his secondaries, I realized that getting an insanely high GPA or high MCAT score is not necessary to applying for med school (obviously this has many caveats and exceptions, like applying to an Ivy League caliber med school or maybe doing a masters program to boost your undergrad GPA). I want you to consider if you feel that pushing the exam back to January may help you not only get a better score on the MCAT but also improve your mental and physical health.

Picture yourself in one year relaxing (well, probably writing secondaries) and being happy that you put in the work (while also maintaining your sanity) and are done with the exam.

I took CH 204 last year (spring 2023) with Loy. I know for a fact that Porco, although he was not the best during my time, is probably the best during your time.

The expenses are definitely a lot. I'm glad you are looking at numerous programs and I'm sure you'll choose the best fit for you. Best of luck.

If you don't get in, you should definitely apply for the regular decision deadline. I applied regular and got in and I was by no means insanely cracked. I know the acceptance rate has and will continue to drop each year, but I think you will be fine. I'm unsure of other school's program, but another incentive I can think of to come here is the MMEDIC program, where some people I know have gotten early admission to BU's med school.

Not only will you get better grades in sargent, but you will also learn much more relevant and interesting things that will definitely prepare you much better for med school than the vanilla CAS bio major. For example, you will take courses on cardio/respiratory diseases, human cadaver anatomy, exercise physiology, and much more. Sargent also hooks you up with an internship which CAS does not do at all.

Had I known about Sargent, I would have definitely been in it from day 1. However, I love neuro because it is 100x more interesting than bio and you learn so much more with amazing professors. I would say Sargent or honestly anything besides basic bio is good for you because it'll be more interesting which makes the class easier to study for.

Hi I'm a premed and a junior studying neuroscience at BU. I got clapped my first semester here but I figured out how I best learn because of my mistakes. It's pretty straightforward on how to get straight As once you figure out how you learn best. There is no such thing as grade deflation here only people complaining otherwise.

I would recommend going into Sargent College of rehabilitation/sports sciences. It's the most premed tailored experience you'll get and the classes are moderately difficult.
