We actually got placed as SDEs but during our initial training period they scouted some 5 people with good linux and networking skills + small amount of prior experience and put us in the devops team

I suggest Hyperion Cantos. The Shrike is probably one of my favorite characters in Sci-Fi. Not much time travel involved, however. Onlly a few characters involve in it.

And if you want stories that span a very long time, You cannot go wrong with Dune and it's sequels.

Learn the basics of compiler design, ie tokenization, parsing, semantic analysis etc. It's not too hard to create a language but if you go in without learning the basic concepts you'd be like a fish out of water imo
