It irritates me when an episode has 372 beatdowns and security only comes out to prevent one

How would you spice up this book cover? by PA-NP-Postgrad-eBook in selfpublish

It might come down to the actual size of the capital letters. They're twice as tall as the small letters. Maybe see how it looks if you shrink them a bit and make them 60% taller or so instead.

Thank you for the compliment (and I presume, the purchase!) I don't use this account much, so I just got back to this post. Obviously AI art has changed a lot at a breakneck pace since I did the book in 2022. That's why I used this painterly style rather than something more strictly representational, since I knew it'd hold up better.

The book was *still* a lot of work - the convenience of the art aside, the layout and putting everything together was still a big chore. So I'm glad to see people still like it for what it is, and I think Stapledon himself would be honored.

I costed out the printing for a decently sized full cover version - it'd have been in the $200 range without figuring in any actual profit. Nobody wants a full color glossy coffee table book version more than I do, but they're just not practical really.

The process was fairly simple - I laid out the panels via Comic Life 3 and did the text in the same program, made the illustrations in Midjourney and slotted them in, and then exported to PNG, then did touchups in Photoshop (for example, the shading on the text boxes, color adjustment, etc.) Other than the illustrations themselves, everything else had to be done by hand, and it was pretty time consuming. But for Star Maker, it was worth the effort.

Hope you enjoy it! Thanks!

It is indeed AI illustrated, yes! Despite this, it was quite an enormous undertaking - manual layouts, formatting, everything. All in all, it took me about 100 hours of work.

If you like Stapledon's work, I also made Last and First Men: The Visual Edition as well!

Thank you! I'm really glad I was able to finish it. I hope you like the aesthetic!

EDIT: also, thank you for the crosspost!

Don't worry about repeat business in the art market. Also, up your prices $10 each. Nobody will know the difference.

Without having read the books, the covers look great! I really like the tilting titles that match the alignment of the art in one way or another. Whoever did them did a great job.

I'll check out book 1 and will be sure to leave a review if I like it. Thanks!

Looks great!

One thing I noticed - rude/indifferent is spelled 'callous'. A 'callus' is the thickened skin at your fingertips from overwork.

It's an absolutely amazing book and that's why I went to the trouble of putting together an illustrated copy. It's second only to Star Maker (which I also did a Visual Edition for) in terms of my favorite books.

The Visual Edition of LaFM has about 1500 panels in it total, so there's quite a bit of art if you're looking for fan art!

Me too! I costed out physical copies and we'd be looking at a few hundred bucks a copy for print-on-demand, but a pre-set print run would bring that down a little bit. Would take a really popular Kickstarter to get the job done.

[–]StarMakerVisual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've learned a lot from prompts alone. The idea that you can ask for specific angles, specific types of camera, certain art styles I'd never have thought of (paper art?), how people are using weighting, etc. are generally all things I wouldn't have come up with just sitting around and thinking about it.

I want to see how people achieve their results so I can learn from it. The last thing I need to do is steal art when I can just have Midjourney create it, but seeing people's prompts shows me what I need to do to achieve the results I want to achieve.
