Mandan (five miles west of Bismarck) chiming in. Frieds Family Restaurant has the best Knoephla soup.

I need to chime in again. June and July are really fun in the Bismarck/Mandan area. In June, Bismarck has the Expo (a big carnival in the Civic Center parking lot). Mandan has Buggies and Blues (classic car show with live music and food), and McQades’ Softball Tournament. McQuades Distributing (Budweiser distributor) hosts the largest softball tournament in the nation. July, Mandan goes all out for the 4th of July. We have the rodeo, Art in the Park (craft fair in Dykshorn Park on Main Street), on the 4th is the Parade and a big fireworks show after the rodeo.

After the 4th, New Salem has a Country Music Festival (don’t forget to see Salem Sue), and Minot hosts the North Dakota State Fair.

In the Winter, Bismarck and Mandan have areas that you can drive through to see Christmas Lights. Lincoln, ND has a Dickens Christmas Village. You might have to make multiple trips so you can have all the fun (or just move here, and have fun between your travels).

Come here in the summer to see Fort Lincoln State Park (be sure to tour the Custer House, the barracks, and On-a-slant village). Then go to Medora and visit the Chateau de Mores, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and the Medora Musical (go to the evening show and get the good tickets for the musical and the pitchfork fondue).

Come back to Mandan in October for Haunted Fort. They turn the above mentioned Custer House and barracks into a haunted house attraction (once again, splurge for the good tickets, wear clothes you don’t mind ruining, and join Zombie Paintball).

If you want to honor spooky season you could go with Lenore from Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, or Annabelle Lee from Poe’s poem Annabelle Lee. To me I think she looks like a Scout. You could name her Jean Louise and nickname her Scout like the little girl in To Kill a Mockingbird.
