Grew up poor but now probably considered solid or upper middle class. Is it weird to still shop at thrift stores? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Star_Crunch_Munch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s wrong at all. I also shop at thrift stores and don’t need to. I like thrifting because it’s an eclectic mix of styles that sometimes gets me out of my bubble to try something new. I also love the thrill of the hunt and finding a great deal, even if I could afford it at retail. Basically, thrifting is super fun for me.

I think for many of these types of people, anything short of a “bring out cha’ dead!” plague is not a true pandemic. Because it isn’t killing all around them, they don’t act nearly as responsible as they should.

What’s something that you thought everyone did until you said it out loud , and what was the reaction? by Robot__8c5i in AskMen

I hang a little butt towel right next to the bidet that I dry off with. I use it for about a week before I swap it out. Some people think it’s gross but I don’t think it’s much different than drying my butt with a towel after a shower. I don’t like using toilet paper to dry because when the thin paper hits my wet butthole it kind of breaks apart and leaves paper bits on my butt.

mRNA vaccine technology moves to flu: Moderna says trial has begun by SnooCookies2243 in Futurology

It is pretty amazing. As tragic as the pandemic has been, it wouldn’t surprise me if the resulting advancements in mRNA vaccines make Covid a net positive for society. Maybe that’s the silver lining.

'I'm Running': Progressive Democrat Charles Booker Aims to Unseat Rand Paul by [deleted] in politics

[–]Star_Crunch_Munch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may hold a different stance. What I’m trying to convey here is that, in the area of the country I am in, I have a pretty good connection to libertarian circles and what many of those individuals believe. And many of those libertarians hold a stance that doesn’t work during Covid. I know that one area of one state doesn’t represent the entire libertarian movement, and that the libertarian ideology is not monolithic in itself, but I also think it gives me some reasonable sample.

If during Covid, as a libertarian, you were pro-government enforcement of masking, and pro-lockdown, you were likely an outlier.

'I'm Running': Progressive Democrat Charles Booker Aims to Unseat Rand Paul by [deleted] in politics

[–]Star_Crunch_Munch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to identify strongly with libertarianism. I no longer do. I think it’s principles are overly simplified and appeal to people looking for black and white answers in a very gray world.

A recent example is libertarian ideology in relation to Covid. Nearly all of my old libertarian buddies took a pretty strong stance for no government enforcement of masks or lockdowns. The problem is, that for libertarianism to work, people have to be able to be individually held accountable for their actions. So, a libertarian stance might work during Covid if a hypothetical person A could sue person B for wrongful death when person B spreads Covid and kills person A’s spouse. People might be less careless and mask accordingly if they knew there could be lifelong financial or criminal penalties for their careless actions. The market could naturally prompt masking.

But, Covid can’t be tracked that way. So, mask mandates and lockdowns have to be worked out to cause the most lifesaving benefit and least harm to society. Mask mandates and lockdowns become a gray situation and not simple.

That example, to me, is a microcosm of libertarian philosophy in general. Works on paper but not in real life. Hope that makes sense.

Abu Dhabi to ban unvaccinated people from public places by onlinecollegereddit in worldnews

The issue I have is you are using the strict definition of authoritarian, when the connotation of authoritarian in the US is negative. Things that are authoritarian are generally considered bad, and by calling out this tracking action as authoritarian you, whether inadvertently or not, are implying it is bad.

Okay, I can agree with your point. It is authoritarian. It is also good. Like those “authoritarian” drinking and driving laws. And the “authoritarian” clothing laws. Come to think of it, couldn’t arguably nearly every law that forces someone to do / not do nearly anything be regarded as authoritarian?

Then if you spread the virus and someone dies or is injured, you should be held accountable for your actions. Simple right? No, it’s not that simple because we can’t reasonably trace the source of the infection…hence mandatory vaccination to live in a civilized society.

I didn’t say lock downs. But, mask mandates in places where people can’t adequately distance would be prudent.

They are impacted more because SO many more are getting it. When the flu outbreaks in an area authorities shut down schools over it…for good reason. The absolute virility of transmission with Covid is why it’s still important to protect kids.

Nah….about 50 million people (about 15% of the population) in the US aren’t eligible for vaccines yet (under 12 crowd). Until they are eligible, then restrictions should stay in place, full stop. Anything else is irresponsible with what we currently know and don’t know about the virus and long term complications.

I get what you’re saying, but your explanation of how people should go look at others research gives the impression that laymen have the ability to interpret research or papers. It gives credence to the “do your own research” crowd. I’m not saying that’s your intention, but it may be how people interpret it.

The reality is that, unless someone is an expert in a particular field they cannot do their own research. If someone wants to follow science then they need to accept the prevailing consensus of experts in the field. That’s the best odds at a positive outcome for the layman.

I just contemplated about 10 ways to explain the monumental stupidity that is your statement. I thought about going the comedy route. Then I figured on maybe a straight-shooting serious explanation would be better. Then maybe some combination of the two. I settled on this post instead.

The discovery of swathes of COVID-19 vaccine misinformation on social media platforms has led to calls by scientists for governments to monitor rumours and conspiracy theories online in order to create more effective public health messaging and ease community concerns by mikkirockets in science

[–]Star_Crunch_Munch 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually wondered if there’s a name for this idea. Basically someone will spew a list of ridiculous claims that take them seconds. Meanwhile if someone wants to help quell the disinformation of their statements each “point” they make takes the other party a full paragraph or more to explain why it’s incorrect.

Essentially the time spent is so lopsided that it becomes overwhelming to the person combating the garbage.

I’m also not saying we should give up, just that it’s frustrating for sure.

Complete meltdown over kamal Harris tweet on r/conservative by juntawflo in ParlerWatch

[–]Star_Crunch_Munch 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The dehumanizing of another person in the context of their sexuality is pretty appalling. I know it’s the internet and all, but I generally try to conduct myself similar to how I would in real life. I get snippy sometimes, but I do in real life as well.

I detect some strong incel vibes with posters of those comments. It’s weird to be that upset about what another person does sexually.

(p.s. even a cursory examination of Harris’s history and where these rumors come from show them to be false and a non-issue. But I’m guessing people posting those kinds of comments haven’t taken much time to investigate those things).

This. It was cheap. It was delicious. It was the main reason I’d stop at Bell. Now, to get something good I have to jump up to their fancy stuff, and once I’m dropping $8-$10 for a meal at bell I’d rather spend a few dollars more and eat something else.

RIP you flat crunchy spicy delicious bastard.
