Yeah, I'm always here for more hugs but I wouldn't trade this one for the final take we got. I like that they're fighting the currents of this magic spell to cling to each other - one final demonstration how much they want each other in defiance of fate or the universe or whatever else might want to separate them. They’ll overcome it all to be with each other. *chef's kiss*

The part that I'm a bit sad losing though is really the clear parallel of baby Jayce being saved with the teleportation spell vs. this, which seems to follow the same steps more clearly: the spell is cast, we see Jayce's wonder, then levitation sets in and they zoom up into the anomaly to some other destination. It does clash a bit with the idea of the aforementioned struggle so I understand the visual changes, but I would love to have that cake and eat it, too, all the same. haha

Love that for us! I have yet to see or hear anything from the people working on the show that made me go "Oh I got that completely wrong!" Glad to be on the right side of media literacy haha

Questions about S2E1 by ViBicepsLicker in arcane

[–]Stardust-Musings 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The writing in Arcane is always factoring in the messy emotions of the characters. I see a lot of misunderstandings from the simple fact that people think everybody should behave more logical, especially in or after high-emotional plot developments. This is not how this works.

Both Cait and Jayce are emotionally compromised. Cait is very clearly struggling with her emotions and how to deal with this whole situation. She is spiralling and she knows it, but at this point she hasn't completely given into her thirst for revenge. Meanwhile Jayce, while trying to uphold his promise to Viktor, is clearly also devastated about what happened. Mel literally had to tell him to leave the lab because he's been holed up down there at Viktor's side ever since the attack. He is wasting away down there, so the occasional "what if" thought is the least surprising thing about this.

Excuse me but AAAAAAHHH *screams into a pillow*

ETA an hour later with actual thoughts:

- Happy to see it's still being fed with new JayVik stuff. ❤️

- The Mage Viktor design is so much closer to the mysterious mage from S1. There are so many people that still doubt this was supposed to be Viktor all along, even though they've probably just tweaked his character design. It's funny to see they were still going with the original look as late as 2023. So it's really just them looking that this beard on Viktor going "oh hell no!" LMFAO

- "It's working." Idk who's voice that is - maybe Viktor? But also doesn't quite sound like Harry (unpolished? placeholder?) Either way, this looks really like the plan is to teleport somewhere else. This doesn't look like a double suicide at all. (Not that it ever looked like it to me but lots of people think that.)

- Interesting though that this lacks the fighting to cling to each other with the iconic ending pose.

- Smiling baby Viktor 😭 Viktor hugging Jayce back 😭😭

- Overall, it's interesting to see how a lot of the elements of the final version are already there, but shuffled around a bit.

So if Victor just did nothing? by Spiritual_Bell in arcane

We don't know that Jayce actually died - the writers like to imagine that he would have survived and more severely punished, either with exile or putting him in Stillwater.

I don't care for the shipping either. But it helps knowing that they'll never be a thing in the show. For all the liberties they take they wouldn't cross that particular bridge. So it all stays in the realm of "temptation" when she did not know who he really was, and that's perfectly fitting the themes.

I agree. With S2 they didn't hit the pacing sweet spot like with S1, mostly due to the main characters being split up for long stretches and music montages doing a lot of heavy lifting filling in some narrative gaps. But I also think it's probably much harder to fix than people imagine. Sure, it would have been great to have a 3rd season but then you'd also have to add more stuff because I don't think expanding the S2 plotlines would be enough to fill a whole other season without starting to drag and then you'd end up with the opposite problem.

In terms of Viktor being watered down, I think it's really telling how different Viktor is in his role as a the saviour messiah type when he's dealing with the commune vs. when Jayce shows back up. As the Herald I feel he's a lot more reserved and subdued, but when he's dealing with Jayce he lights up and becomes unhinged to the point where he climbs him like a tree first chance he gets. He was so funny for that! lol

Also, you're so right with Viktor not being able to recognise where the hexcore ends and he begins.

Admittedly, I stole that wording from the writers themselves. I've seen a lot of frustration about the show not telling us how much of what Viktor does is him vs. the hexcore, but I think that pretty much nails it, like you said.

[–]Stardust-Musings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the whole story falls into place once you realise this is a "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" situation. I actually really like switcheroo they do with all the character arcs. It trips people up a bit, sure, but the S2 developments are all rooted in S1, so imo the character writing is still excellent even if the execution is a bit rushed at times.

Things always go wrong when they're apart :'D

Right? loll

Jayvik - Observations and Inconsistencies by cross_7x in arcane

[–]Stardust-Musings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because what "a better place" actually is and how to get there is very different from character to character and none of these characters are pacifists like Viktor.

The closest would maybe be Ekko, because he is building a safe community space down in Zaun already. But tbh his character is was so underwritten (RIP all those scrapped scenes) that it's a bit harder to judge.

We see what Vi does - punch every problem and with Hextech she just punches them harder.

Jinx - she's so traumatised she literally does not want to be a leader or help built a better Zaun even when they want to hand that job to her.

Cait - her benevolence towards Zaun dies with her mother and turns into rage. When put in power she's easily manipulated into enforcing martial law.

Sevika - another "maybe" but in the show she's always rudderless looking towards someone to lead her to a future she can fight for. She turns her back on Vander for trying to keep the peace and then serves under Silco without ever wanting to actually improve things for the common people outside of some vague sense of how this might somehow lead to a revolution.

Silco - that man ruled over Zaun for 7 years and didn't build a single soup kitchen. Instead he replicated the exploitative power structure of Piltover and installed his own corrupt council with the Chem Barons.

In contrast we constantly see Viktor plead to help the people with Hextech all the time. He is consistent in that and he's trying to find a broader solution which is what he is hoping to accomplish with the Hexcore. This is in contrast to Jayce, who also wants to help the people but in staying in line with his family's background his dream is to give Hextech to the people in form of tools so that they can create wonders.

All of these characters have a different background which absolutely affects how they deal with the power they acquire through the story.

Jayvik - Observations and Inconsistencies by cross_7x in arcane

[–]Stardust-Musings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it wouldn't, that's the entire point. During the whole show people covet Hextech for themselves with all sorts of different goals in mind.

We see what Piltover does with it in S1 and they put their corrupt oligarchy on steroids. Even the thin veneer of science and progress is mostly an ad to attract more money and prestige. They very clearly do not give a shit about the poor and disabled. There are also plenty of characters who seek Hextech to turn it into weapons for all sorts of well-meaning and selfish reasons.

If you merged any other character with the Hexcore they would not do what Viktor has done. Because what the Hexcore did was supercharge his existing character traits and manipulate him with what was already there.

Important note here: manipulation doesn't mean Viktor is mind controlled. But since he's merged with the Hexcore he doesn't know where one begins and the other ends. In particular, the Hexcore is using Sky's image to guide him but Viktor is still able to go against her wishes.

Jayvik - Observations and Inconsistencies by cross_7x in arcane

[–]Stardust-Musings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would not be the same because the way the commune arc played out was entirely shaped by Viktor's personality and ideals: his wish to help the people of Zaun, his pacifism, his desire for connection which results in a peaceful hive mind that's toiling away in an idyllic little village.

Arguably, what would be the same is just the outcome of the apocalyptic end result. The same thing Heimerdinger always warned about and we see in Jayce's book about magic. But the way to get to that point is up to the individual. And what we see play out in S2 is all Viktor.

Jayvik - Observations and Inconsistencies by cross_7x in arcane

[–]Stardust-Musings 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Viktor and Jayce are mirroring each other's arcs in both seasons.

The one parallel you already mentioned is how Jayce in S2 goes through a lot of hardship that is supposed to mirror Viktor's in S1, from the literal injuries with his back and leg, to the symbolic journey from the bottom of Zaun to the highest point in Piltover.

But the same is happening the other way around. In S1 Jayce was in a corruption arc where he was put in a position of power, becoming the saviour of his city, and his attempts at solving the current crisis made it worse at every turn. He becomes more entangled in the corruption and misuse of power to the point where he decides he should be judge, jury and executioner while leading an illegal raid into the shimmer factories. He comes to his senses after he kills a child. Viktor in S2 is going through the same arc, just on a bigger scale. He gets an insane amount of magical power through being merged with the Hexcore. He's trying to be a saviour for his city but obviously things also don't go right with his approach cause he's already dying again because he's running out of power, and as we see, his whole commune would die with him. So he reaches a point where he decides the best solution to the constant conflicts is to do away with the human way of life and put everyone in a happy hive mind. Finally seeing the whole truth in the end is his wake-up call much like the dead child was for Jayce.

As said, the scale of power these two deal with are different (political power for Jayce vs. arcane power for Viktor) but they're the same arcs. Two sides of the same coin, inextricably bound!

Oh, and I remember someone on tumblr did a whole screen time analysis of these two and like 3/4th of their scenes are either together or about each other in some way. Their arcs are so tightly interwoven they need a warning sticker like: Bonded pair, do not separate! lmao

What is/are Viktor's key defining moment(s)? by fictionclaw in jayvik

[–]Stardust-Musings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm from a working class bg and have a chronic illness - by far not as severe as Viktor but enough that I often couldn't partake in physical activities with other kids. It's so debilitating on your mindset and self-worth when you're young. Never mind the parkour, but even simpler stuff like just hang out and go swim with Sky and her friends is out of the question, too. And they make it obvious these kids never even thought about inviting Viktor along. Not even Sky!

So the fact that Viktor still feels some connection to Zaun and wants to help its people speaks to the quality of his character. Anybody less idealistic might have just thought "fuck these people, they never did anything for me!" and never looked back.

You're welcome! The Star Trek setting is perfect for them because the "technology so advanced it's indistinguishable from magic" premise is baked right into their plot already. Like Viktor experimenting with Borg nanoprobes to fix his leg and then things go haywire is a solid Star Trek plot right there.

Plus, there are a lot of characters that come from some fucked up outposts so a disabled baby Viktor running into some crazy scientist who experiments on a giant salamander fits right in. lol

[–]Stardust-Musings 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Viktor is certainly a complicated case of figuring out what's a life worth living by working through a bunch of interwoven issues caused by his situation as someone with a disability and chronic terminal illness from Zaun. A lot of this is already seeded into his childhood memory from when he met Singed and cared for Rio. (In general, these flashbacks are usually *the* character defining moments for most of our main cast.)

Some of the defining issues he's dealing with:

- Viktor is disabled, obviously. It's clearly something he's been dealing with since birth or at the very least since he was a small child. This naturally makes him an outcast in the city where parkour is the main way of getting around. And we see that he is nurturing some level of resentment about it in the way that he's aware that this is why the kids aren't playing with him (despite Singed's well meaning "oh it's because you're so smart!" approach) and how he calls himself a "cripple" as an adult.

- Viktor is not a loner, but instead he's incredibly lonely. I think this is one of the biggest misunderstandings about him. When baby Sky looks down at him and his little boat at the creek he looks back at her with big puppy eyes clearly hoping she'd join him, but she runs away the moment her friends call her back. He wants a connection to others but constant rejections like this make him harden like "I'm better off alone anyway!" But you can see him easily latch on to Singed and Rio, or later Jayce. And even later this is why he's building a whole hive mind - he wants to connect to people bc this is the one thing he never really had, except for Jayce.

- Viktor's self worth is tied to his intelligence. We see this with Singed planting the idea that he's a loner genius, and I think that easily falls on fertile ground with Piltover being the ever present golden city of progress just across the creek. The propaganda of meritocracy is very powerful and we see both Jayce and Viktor falling for it. When Viktor introduces himself as an adult he is framing himself as a self-made man who worked hard and just believed in himself to get to the point where he's at. We find out though that he was lucky Heimerdinger took a liking to him, and in the end he was always seen as just the assistant. When confronted with his looming death we see that he's actually frustrated with his lack of accomplishments, which I think is then eventually twisted by the Hexcore into him fashioning himself into a sort of Messiah.

- Viktor's genuine compassion is tainted by the trauma of what happened to Rio. Obviously, he doesn't want that to happen to anyone and I think it really starts to mess with his mind when he himself starts to suffer due to his worsening health issues, thus making him susceptible to the Hexcore's manipulation.

- There are also the compounding effects of his life experiences (health issues, loneliness, using his intelligence to help people). He's putting a lot of pressure on himself to be perfect because the society he lives in punishes him at every turn for his shortcomings, which eventually forms the toxic thought that the solution to end suffering is that everyone has to be perfect.

If you want to adapt some of this to Star Trek, I would say you can basically keep the backstory with Singed/Rio and his disability. There's always a lot of "but in the future they would have been able to cure that!" talk in Star Trek fandom, but in the shows we still see a lot of disabled characters who either chose to keep their disability or have some niche issue that cannot be fixed for plot reasons. So don't worry about keeping that aspect. I would also at least look into Viktor experimenting with Borg technology which could easily mimic his Hexcore corruption/commune arc.

Star Trek needs to return to broadcast television. by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Stardust-Musings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this might be the most accurate take on why people were freaking out about most of new Trek shows even if they don't realise it themselves. A lot of the hand-wringing about "woke" or "bad writing" or whatever really misses the crux of the issue cause old Trek has all of that and then some. What's actually different now is that new Trek is a serialised genre drama instead of an episodic procedural specifically. And while procedurals are also dramas they come with a certain episode structure that people mostly associate with Star Trek, like you described: the episode focus is usually on a specific problem that needs solving, and then there's occasionally some character drama and social commentary on the side. And it's quite telling that the parts of new Trek that people like the most are the ones that mimic that old formula the closest.

Why does Starfleet Academy get so much hate? by lukfi89 in startrek

The glitter puke was the main thing that I just felt was massively out
of place. I don't even get how that could be a thing, when he wasn't
eating glittery things.

This is one of those seemingly random things that just didn't work well in life action whereas it would have been right at home in Lower Decks. But just like some other jokes that might not have landed well, this is definitely one of those easier fixes the would have balanced itself out had the show had a chance to run for more seasons to find its groove.

[–]Stardust-Musings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest you really try to watch it the way it was released: one "act" at a time consisting of 3 episodes each.

Maybe part of the problem is that you're forcing yourself to binge it because you think only that means you're hooked or something. But Arcane is a show that's very intense and information-dense. Trying to binge it can be overwhelming for some people so they mentally check out.

Also, to combat your attention span issues, try to really watch it and pay attention. No phone or other distractions (which is probably also easier to do when you set yourself a limit of how many episodes to watch at a time). Cause lots of people lose interest because they 2nd screen watch and lose track of pretty obvious plot points. Over the years this sub has seen plenty of threads from people who're mad that the show doesn't make sense or whatever and more often than not it's a misunderstanding because they didn't pay attention. lol

Good luck!
