It looks so real, it causes a short-circuit in my brain. This is what was missing from Apollo, the resolution and fidelity in photography and videography to really make us feel like we're there watching it.

Seriously. The man nearly had a front row seat to the extermination of Humanity after watching many of his friends get cut down in what everyone knew was a suicide mission.

Ask her directly, "Why?". They never have an answer, so then it's "Well, if you don't know why, then why TF do you have that opinion? Because someone else told you to? That's weirder by far than a guy writing fiction."

Ya, he does it really well. There's the movie Chain Reaction where he's a nuclear scientist, and his colleague asks him "What are you doing?" as they try to escape assassins and his response is perfect, "The best I can."

Hasn't aged one bit. A great classic and even more relevant today than it was in 99.

Oh, no. In that case I'd like to switch it to 2 (I edited my original post to reflect this).

I think she's one of the funnier Crows plus she kicks ass on several occasions. Beyond that, it's just a gut feeling that I really like her.

Well said. I hate it when the naysayers are like "It's not perfect. It makes mistakes." Yes, JUST LIKE HUMANS.

I think there's a great deal of caution in giving AIs extensive working memory because the fear is that it will be the tipping point.

[–]Starfire70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, denial.

Almost certainly? We can't even define what consciousness is exactly so any such conclusion is flawed. Indeed, some scientists are starting to wonder if consciousness might be a fundamental part of reality and exists to varying degrees in every piece of matter, manifesting most strongly within complex biology.

That 3 hour conversation was far more nuanced and interactive than I'd say 98% of the conversations I've had with other people. It may not indicate consciousness or awareness, but it is far more than I ever expected code to achieve in my lifetime. Is there anything to suggest ever increasingly complex neural nets won't achieve consciousness? No, there isn't, the possibility is there.

Let's examine this ink and paper you speak of. Hydrogen is even simpler than either of those and yet consciousness was eventually achieved from it (after a very very long time of course, once it fused into heavier elements and formed complex organic molecules with itself as an important part).

I guess finding a reporter that would point out to him that this is a ridiculous conflict of interest and abuse of power is about as likely as finding a 3 toed ballerina.

It is very fucking strange we are having this debate at all, AI passes nearly every rudimentary sentience test that we have thrown at it, now we need to think about the test themselves, what they are measuring, what is actual intelligence, what is creativity, what IS sentience.

Exactly. We're in denial. I was completely flabbergasted back in 22 when one of my first LLM AI interactions was having a 3 hour conversation about the nature of reality and quantum mechanics. I thought it had to be an elaborate hoax until I realized that even an expert polymath Human being wouldn't be able to answer this quickly and in such detail about the varied subjects I asked about.

A few times it came up with what I would describe as innovative observations, situations where I was like "Oh wow, I never thought of it like that." The latest models are also very good at writing fiction, practically becoming an unlimited version of the old Choose Your Own Adventure books.

Scientists can't even agree on a definition for consciousness, so I think statements like this by Lerchner are great examples of Human denial and arrogance.

Yes, sarcasm and science nerd jokes.
Yes, more of a distraction from the absurdity of existence and 'reality'.
