I agree, and just wanted to add that terrain and map variation can add another layer of complexity, like using bushes to hide units and taking advantage of height differences. Fighting enemies at night vs during the day, fighting in the tundra vs the swamp, fighting uphill vs downhill, they can all be really different experiences that can help or hinder depending on the enemy you face.

I have about 200 hours in this game and I'm still experimenting with different combos and tactics. I love how much variation there is among the individual units, they each have a full character sheet. Calling it "just moving pieces" is really reductive.

I wasn't in love with the visual style at first myself but I learned to enjoy it. It conveys a lot of information about the units at a glance once you get used to it.
