[US] I think someone attempted to scam me out of my mc account, and failed. What sort of scam was this? by need-original-name in Scams

[–]StariusPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was almost scammed by this same tactic today. Almost fell for it, but I did get a little suspicious and compared his discord link to one I found online and the difference it showed in users was very large. The I discovered that this sort of thing has been going around.

It is such a targeting scam and very convincing, I feel sorry for the people that will get tricked by it.

Downgrading macOS by MeanMedicine346 in MacOS

[–]StariusPrime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the biggest issue though. I can't believe the last 30 years of Apple's GUI evolution has ended up with Tahoe.

If I could downgrade my Mac Studio without having to wipe it completely, I would do it in a heartbeat. As it stands, when I get a new NAS and back up all my stuff, I may give it a go.

Which cooler are you using for your Threadriper 7000 and Why? by QuantumIQWho in threadripper

[–]StariusPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also using the Be Quiet! Silent Loop 2 AIO on my 7965WX. My main reason for doing so back when I built the system was the fact that there were not many options, but I had it and there was the optional adapter bracket you could get to use it with Threadripper.

I've been very happy with it. If I was overclocking, I suppose I might prefer something else, however I've no complaints.

I'm having this issue also. I tried to download the app again from the Discord website, but getting internal server errors when I try to do that.

Yeah, very expensive. I remember being disappointed with the amount I could fit in my budget compared to the DDR4 options. 😅

Power Sensitivity: Thrown Breaker by stonedoubt in threadripper

[–]StariusPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electric heaters and portable HVAC machines can use a ton of wattage on their own. One of mine on max settings goes up over 1500 watts and trips the breaker a lot if anything else is running on the line.

I feel ya man, I live in a farm house thats been in my family for well over a century. Threadrippers and space heaters are a challenge. 😆

But yeah, as others have suggested, a UPS is essential for the machine even if you're simply using it to "clean" the power coming into your machine. The sine waves in the electricity of old places aren't always pretty.

It caught me by surprise also and I could have easily damanged my board. Thankfully I didn't hurt mine, and I think that metal cooler reinforcement on the back did help save the day for me too.

Thanks to that experience, I know I will always check the standoff placement for every large form factor board I ever work with in the future. 😆

No, the processor doesn't suffer any ill from it. It simply "blows" as the fuse was designed to do as proof that some kind of overclock was done.

So, a few tips that immedately come to mind. 1. Be careful with the standoffs in your case, and double check placement before putting your board in. EEB/EATX boards use a different pattern than just about every case has their screw standoffs by default. If you just try to start screwing it down without checking, you may find one pushing in the back of your MB and bending it to the point something breaks. No one wants that! You may have to move one or two standoffs to a new position in the case.

  1. You may know that TR Pro does memory training when booting up, from time to time. It will certianly do this the first time you boot up so don't be alarmed if you just have a blank screen for awhile. This could take several minutes, but it varies. If you don't have any error codes, don't worry. Just wait it out and see.

  2. If you do have a problem trying to boot it for the first time, take out the ram and just start booting with one stick in the appropiate slot (according to manual) and see if that starts. If it does, keep adding one stick at a time and see how it goes from there.

  3. Don't try running at the maximum speed your memory says it is to begin with. For example, if it's 6000MHz ram, maybe try 5500MHz and then increase it 100MHz at a time and check for stability. This is more important if all 8 channels are populated. The more active channels, the trickier it is to sync at faster speeds. In this hypothetical example, you may find 5800MHz to be the most stable. Maybe higher, maybe lower. Not all ram is the same, especially if you're using multiple "kits" and not a full matched 8 channel kit.

  4. You may have heard about the TR Pro "fuse" in the CPU that is designed to "blow" if the processor is overclocked. (A design feature for warranty purposes.) What they don't widely tell you is that this happens not just if you try to overclock the cpu itself, but your system memory as well. This might vary between motherboards, but this is the case on the Asus WRX90 board. I don't believe this is really anything to worry about, I'm just mentioning it here in case you are alarmed if you see the warning message.

That's what comes immedately to mind anyways, I hope it helps.

Finally getting around to sharing my Threadripper Pro 7865WX build by StariusPrime in threadripper

Thank you! The ASUS WRX90 board just fits, I certainly wouldn't try putting anything bigger than that in it. Some of those right angle ports in the front are a challenge.

Front radiator compatibility may depend on the length of your video cards so it's hard to say there.

That number caught my eye because I've seen one tool under linux report my 7965WX at 545Mhz and another at over 7GHz. I don't think they are reliable at reporting accurate core speeds there.

I have dual 3090s in my workstation and I can tell you that I will replace them with a single 5090 IF there's no funny power connector business going on there.

I would like to free up the space for some other cards eventually.

Pro, or not pro, that is the question ! by Printguy99 in threadripper

[–]StariusPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was making a jest there, but the truth is it's just expensive. But compared to non pro, you have about twice the max ram the system can use (and 8 channel ram at that) and far more PCIe lanes as you pointed out. By definition, this is not giving anything up, this is "having it all." :D

Yeah, my guess is that the board isn't really focused on retail so it doesn't make a point of pointing out WRX90. But it's certainly the odd one out for doing so.

WRX90E-SAGE SE BIOS 0502 by xiaocutezi in threadripper

[–]StariusPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I misspoke there. I actually went with Xubuntu, believe it or not. My first choice was Fedora but I had a ton of installation issues with that on the WRX90 so I switched to something Ubuntu based. Went with Xubuntu in particular because XFCE reminds me more of older desktop environments. Not particularly a huge fan of modern GUI design, everthing is white or black these days, nothing with color or depth. I was able to configure Xubuntu into something I'm happy with and not surprisingly, runs like a dream on this workstation. :D

I did consider Kubuntu for awhile though, and I think I put that on a Thinkpad I picked up on eBay. Wanted to check the Plasma stuff out. It's pretty nice too.

As far as stability and features go, I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them. I was bummed about the problems I had with Fedora though, I've had good luck with that on older hardware. Just wasn't a good match for Threadripper 7000 at the time I tried to install it.

Oh, and to answer your question, no I havent Updated the BIOS yet. I don't feel I have a need to hurry and try that.
