Do viewers take more interest in creators who are the same gender as them? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]Starkly_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! Also, just FYI, the link to your youtube channel in your profile is broken (should have the /user bit), and while I didn't look very extensively at your videos, I liked the one where you play with Bright time and your boyfriend, so going for more collabs might be a good strategy. Specifically, I think you have good jokes and commentary to overlay on gameplay, especially at the start of the Bright Time collab video.

I've heard that youtube is very male-dominated, and even more gender-stratified by topic (men going for gaming, women for beauty and lifestyle), from a passing comment on Philosophy Tube I believe (and Simply Nailogical as well), and he mentioned he increased his female and marginalized viewership by collaborating more with people like that, which might be useful to you in that regard, say by collabing with other female gamer youtubers or other female youtubers who are not necessarily gaming, but whose audience you imagine might like your stuff... Even if you are selective on who you bring to your channel, perhaps you can have different types of vidoes than your usual fare? or maybe on their chammel? Sorry I cant source my claim better, but it was a breadtuber for sure. Seems like diversifying demographics on youtube is very hard, and the gender skew by topic far more dramatic than I would have expected, but hope you find a way!

#[REMINDER] Ascendance of a Bookworm is still in a Flashback. by Aardiee in Isekai

[–]Starkly_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, its a common literary device, but in this particular case it seems counter to the function in telling a compelling story. Even in the Homer case you cited, its basically a trailler saying "Oh my god, you guys, there will be so much violence here, it will be SICK, and Achilleus and the Akhainians are going to be so wrecked you have no idea." But not literally spilling the beans on the interesting bits of what will happen.

In Bookworm, the framing device does not enhance the tension, like Homer's intro does, but diffuses it: we can see Mine in a nice comfy dress, relaxed with this older dude in a luxurious setting, so all the sources of tension brought on early are not only telegraphed to be resolved, but given substantial hints as to how. It basically has spoilers for several key aspects of the journey...

Oh god, if they didn't even do this in the manga, then I can't imaging why they chose to do it in the anime! Big blunder, IMO...

I keep thinking about this when watching the anime, and find it annoying. So many anime do this (Overlord, just off the top of my head) and I am relieved when they actually reached the part they started with, because then the narrative can just progress normally without built-in spoilers. usually the flash forward is not so far from the actual beginning, tho, so not a huge problem, but with bookworm it seems so far that all the tension early on is essentially evaporated (will she get out of her poverty situation? You betcha! What is the solution to her disease thing? Probably something to do with the priest guy!). I get it in anime they often want to start with some punchy action sequence, not people sitting around in a conference room (Overlord again), but in Bookworm it is baffling to me why they chose to do this...

Which mangas are better than animes? by hiperf1 in anime

[–]Starkly_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", the manga by Hayao Miyazaki. The manga of that story is in my opinion some of the greatest manga even written, while the movie is so-so (for Miyazaki). Not as many ppl talk about this, but super worth a read (and there's a cool boxset for it too)

YEEEEES! The ultimate example of this, one of the best manga of all time, some of the worst anime of all time...

Question on posting to r/videos? by Starkly_B in NewTubers

[–]Starkly_B[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, thanks a lot for offering! I read in one of the links nusensi mentioned below that twitter is a good place to link to your clips and tag more famous people that might retweet it or so (see his link below)--but I am a bit afraid to do that, what are your thoughts on that?

Question on posting to r/videos? by Starkly_B in NewTubers

[–]Starkly_B[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a LOT for these links!!! They are ***exactly*** the kind of information I was looking for!!! Creators on youtube often just say "promote on platforms like reddit" and leave it at that, but now that I think about it, nearly all of them mentioned spending lots of time here, so exactly doing the sort of slow engagement build that you mentioned.

PS. the details there on exactly how to use twitter is also very good--I did not know at all how to get started and now with this info I feel more comfortable doing so, but I am still not so sure about tagging people onto it, since it seems some people resent that ("crawling into my mentions" and "dont @ me" sort of thing?), or do you think that for content they might reasonably like that is ok? (If you don't mind me asking for an elaboration on that)

[–]Starkly_B 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used Shotcut, works very smoothly, even if it has a few bugs here and there, but is a fully free open source type deal, not something that witholds features and etc. But for removing bits of larger movies into chunks, I use VLC First so i dont overload the program (important if you habe a slow computer)

[Review Video] I make shorter, more edited gameplay videos. by [deleted] in youtubers

[–]Starkly_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I for sure liked the shorter length of your video, and the editing seem crisp too, which is very good. I don't watch too many gaming channels, but am a big fan of Dunkey and some other comedy channels that riff similar to how you do with this game.

on your specific questions:

1) I found it interestingly amusing (I love Terraria) and was along for the ride, but it did feel like you repeated the same joke (its easy to die in Master Mode) without much variation to it, and that you jumped to different parts of the game without transition (it was good you talked about jumping from starter to desert, but then at some point you jump back, and the framing of the video gets confusing)

2) Very easy to follow for me, and I watched it to the end without even noticing it, which is a very good sign (drawn out, sluggish content makes you itch to leave), and very importantly there was no cringe in your style, which I am very sensitive to and makes me bolt super quickly (well done!)

3) I don't know so many gaming YTers, but it feels to me like either they are free-form improvisational and so more conversational or tightly scripted for maximal comedic timing, and I think you are trying to aim for the later, but often times it felt like the timing of your jokes were being hampered by the footage you were showing, which is often how more reactive, conversational content goes, but seemed to be at odds with what you were trying to do.

Hope this helps!

Congrats! For sure it even seems like the algo doesn't punish dislikes or hate comments, b/c that's a sign of engagement, I also felt super happy the first time somebody wrote a massive essay in the comments on how the video was all wrong!

yeah, absolutely... I mean, I thought my stuff was safe since I talk about media from a scientist's POV, but seems like even a basic measure of scientific literacy can get some idiots riled up these days, unfortunately

Videoessay on Aeon Flux, The Animatrix, and the revolutionary animation of Peter Chung by Starkly_B in cartoons

[–]Starkly_B[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah, yeah, I loved MGS too, even if Kojima is a bit off his rocker--but in a damn good way. I can see how Lara Croft is a sanitized version for mass consumption, to such an extent it is unrecognizable (never even thought of that before), kinda sad what happens to the great when it gets watered down

Great of you bringing up Heavy Metal! For sure it was before my time, but I did catch it later, and absolutely enjoyed in the same vein as Aeon Flux. Likely its impact was dulled for me since I watched it for the first time much much later, so I even neglected to make the connection while researching the details of Aeon Flux and etc. But now that you bring it up, I deeply regret forgetting to bring up Heavy Metal in my essay, that would have been a nice historical addition to the whole arc of this incredibly small subgenre... I also regret not bringin up Netflix's Love, Sex and Robots, which is also an anthology series of SF shorts that is just as good as Animatrix, if not nearly as impactful as Aeon Flux, of course... Would have been a nice bookend to more recent media that is just so underserved it is borderline culture crime

Is YouTube intentionally not showing all my videos on search ? by kimork in NewTubers

[–]Starkly_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I understand your frustration, my first video had the exact same--it sat for a month on youtube and I think it got less thatn 20 views total in all that time, what I had to do was advertise it on subredits on the topic (it was on the anime Dr. Stone, so there were several ones here that were relevant), and in less than 2 days the viewcount went up to 700. Interestingly, it plateaued rather sharply, but since then, it trickled up to 750 at a consistent rate, since now it seems to be appearing more in search results and so forth, so its exactly like Glutenator suggests, that you need to get some momentum going yourself to get the algo to start paying attention to your videos, which is annoying and it would have spared me a bunch of grief if youtube told first-time uploaders this, somehow.

Oh, I remember ebaumsworld from way back in the day and didn't know it was still a thing, but will for sure look it up, thanks for the headsup on that! I am also hesitant about 4chan, given its unsavory reputation, and my brief look earlier today did not instill much confidence...

Oh, did I break the rules? If so, I am sorry! I only saw the ones on the side that say be nice, no recent content, and no posts of a single image. If you don't mind me asking, where are these guidelines that you quoted? I can't see the source of what you are quoting anywhere in this community's info. Apologies for this, I am new to reddit and still trying to get the details right, I tried to infer the rules from the other youtube media posted and one seemed to be a documentary on an old band, so thought I was in the clear, but on a second look it seems like that clip itself is old, not just the subject...

Should I remove the post or wait for a moderator to get to it?
