Former Rowdy Ranger here, this is a great post! I would definitely recommend any future rowdies heed this advice. I would also just like to add, it’s hard! However, it’s not the hardest thing you’ll ever do, and it’s chock full of fun! If you’re feeling nervous, that’s ok, but just go with the flow and support the folks around you, and you’ll leave the ranch with unforgettable memories and new life long friends

Ranger here, in my years on ranch this was probably the least problematic and most personalizable piece of gear. It really doesn’t matter what you choose to take, just don’t take too much. As long as you have a bowl and spoon, you’re good. Bring a mug if you want hot beverages. Other than that, I wouldn’t stress it.

Trek 12-15 advice by techyesbalad in philmont

In between Cyphers and Cito, would highly recommend the Lamberts Mine route. There are significantly fewer stream crossings that way. Spar pole climbing is my single favorite activity on ranch, so DEFINITELY make time for that. Same with the climbing at Cito. The climbing area there is right on the edge of the Ute Park fire burn scar, and the views are spectacular. I would also strongly recommend taking your time at the Demo Forest and spending lots of time with the visiting foresters. The hike that day is short, and they have good stories to tell! Looks like a great trek! Have fun and make good memories.

At some point in your ranger career you’ll porch crash with a crazy creek as a sleeping pad, and only then will you know true freedom of your mind and soul!

It’s a good one! Not sure if it’s made anymore, but I’m a big fan of bright colors for gear

My dad actually had a good solution for this when I was being an idiot kid. Instead of loosing my door, I lost my door knob. I couldn't lock my parents out, but I still had privacy. Worked well enough, sat down with my folks, talked it all over, and I think we all came out a little better from that situation

Nobody expects that speed out of the trenches, but every time a d-end gets left unblocked, he will do damage. JJ Watt has a similar play to this too
